[Restoration] Defender In Da House
« on: September 02, 2009, 05:46:14 PM »

obviously i don't have enough restoration projects at the moment  :-\ so i decided to bring another game from the FIVE IN A ROW BERLIN ROADTRIP up into my apartment: DEFENDER

some scratches on the marquee - novus should do the trick. all i can say about those "sat 1 logo" stickers (a german tv channel) is going once, going twice, gone for good!  ;D

the front art is in nice condition  :-*

only some minor touching up to do where a security bar in front of the coin door had been installed

the whole coin door could use some cleaning - especially the coin insert. patrik is a huge fan of that "clever fox" in the middle and BEGGED me to keep and even restore it. my dear friend, of course it has to go, but i'll think of something special to do with the fox just for you!

the condition of the sideart isn't that bad either ...

... which means this time i won't be repainting the entire cabinet, just do some colour touch-ups. obviously someone else has tried this before

as always, the edges of the cabinet are worn, but the worst part is this . it doesn't look too bad on the picture, but in reality it's a huge chunk of wood which has broken off  >:(

finally, the control panel! apart from the fact that the coloured buttons for 1-/2-player and thrust/fire have to be exchanged, there's one more thing that i've already seen before on a friend's defender machine: the control panel overlay has been cropped on both sides for some centimeters and the black laminate which can be found to the left and right of the overlay has been expanded. WHY  ???

here's a shot of how the panel is supposed to look like ...

this is something which doesn't stand out right away and if you don't look closely you won't even realize, but have a look at a closeup-photo. see what i'm talking about?

overall, i would say the cabinet is in average condition, there are no parts which don't need cosmetic surgery - as always  ;)

to be continued ...

all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

really nice cabinet

It looks like someone painted yellow dots with a spraycan on the cabinet?

I can tell you exactly!!!:   Cigarette Burns!   This was an attempt to remove them and neatly paint the sides...  I had a Stargate, and done the same thing.  (I got my Stargate back in 1993, and traded it for another game)  There were no repro kits yet and parts were harder to find.

No Bruno, it's NOT the same on your panel. yours IS cropped, too, but not that much. you do have three boxes on the left, i only have two. however, yours is also missing something. i was just curious to know if other machines were "affected", too. i'll simply get a new overlay and everything's going to be fine  :)

a con-fuse-ing question:  ;)

my defender should work (haven't been able to test it though, because all the pcb boards are out) except for one blown fuse on the power panel assembly. have a look

magnification! i placed the fuse upwards so that i know / odn't forget it's blown and it has to be replaced

i've tried to find that fuse in the schematics now but i'm a real schematics noob, so i'd like to get your confirmation. i got those schematics from the web and had to piece two pages together - and of course parts of the important details are missing in the middle (scanner issues), but it should be number 7

according to the legend it should be a LINE FUSE 3AMP 115V

the only thing that's written on my blown defender fuse is 250 VOLT on one end and on the other end BOSS MTH 4

i have NO IDEA which type of fuse to buy, slow-blow / fast-blow, how many amps, how many volts, ...

your input is requested, please  :-*

i think i vould go for a 250 3A...
how "dense" is the string inside the fuse? (the size of it?)

I would say that its 3A/115V for 110V configurations or 1,5A/250V. for 220V configurations....

Volt x Amp = Watt

so if 110V x 3A = 330 W   we need to devide the 330W with 220V  = 1,5A

slow-blow will be fine.

nothing inside - gone for good when it blew

i have two suggestions now:

3 AMP and 1.5 AMP - hmmm  ???

anyone else?

use 1,5A  you will be on the "safe side" then  8)

If it doesn't blow it will be fine.

that post is the conclution! - that´s what i will use..
thanks! - i also have a few fuses reading 4A-110V = 2A-220V!
