Quest for Pac- Man and Ms. Pac-Man artwork
« on: March 12, 2010, 10:53:46 AM »

That really looks great. As you know I recently acquired a PM and a ms. PM cab and I am searching the internet for information about restoring or replacing side art. I know that painting the sideart with a stencil set is the most original thing to do, but using stickers (a necessity for ms. PM I believe) is so much easier and looks also very good.

You applied the twobit stickers a few years ago. How are they doing today? No spontanious bubbles, or pealing? What is your opinion of the print quality and color match?

Edit: I just read this somewhere: 'There are 2 different Ms Pac Cabs out there. The originals (typically faded) are painted with stencils. The later cabs actually have vinyl side art like a more modern cab. Those seem to have aged a bit better than the painted ones if the art is still intact.'

Is this true? And could it also be the case for pac-man cabs?

Edit 2: nice story: http://www.basementarcade.com/arcade/mspacman/tlnmpm/index.html
watch the strange color of the T-molding. Never seen this before on a ms. pac-man.

for me, stencils is the only way to go - although much more difficult and time-consuming to apply / use! i'd never put vinyl on a cab IF stencils were available, but that's just my two cents, it's your cab after all!
all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

I know it's possible to download the stencels for ms pacman, do you guys have any idee how much it will cost to have them made? Maybe we can arrange some groupdeal to safe money.

A week ago the complete ms pacman vinyl set (3 pieces) was for sale on ebay.com, they went for 150 dollar.

That's a good price. But you have to be very careful with the artsets, there are some good stencilset files floating around, but also some really bad ones, in the way that they are very poor reproductions. the same goes for Pac man.

Where did you get them from?

I know, the ones on Rotheblog (http://www.rotheblog.com/2008/05/arcade-game-artwork/breaking-news-joymonkeys-ms-pac-man-vector-stencil-files-online-at-local-arcade/) seems do be the most accurate ones.
Unfortunately they don't seem to be available anymore. But his site has a lot of interesting information about stenceling.

That "last new" Ms.Pac looks really weird.I don't really like the look of it.

My Ms.Pac is definitly stencilled and I'd prefer to keep it as it is now above applying decals over them.
Stenciling is the only way IMHO and although I don't have a set-up to do it, wouldn't there be a possibility to do a "group" session somewhere. Maybe someone knows a car-painter who has a working space and the skill and stuff to spray paint the cabs. If we could do a "row" we might be able to save some serious costs. Mind you, I'm not planning on doing it quickly, I've got other (financial) priorities first in the hobby.

What I do know is that you don't want anything from Two Bits.....

Yes, I've used the stickers four years ago because at the time, there was no stencils available. For a matter of authenticity I would go immediately to the stencils solution now.
But, I must admit I'm still happy with the cabinet 'stickers powered by twobits' now  :P The color match is very good IMo, no bubble or pealing. The colors are still shining like the day I applied the stickers  8) It's maybe because the cabinet is inside my 24H/24 356D/365D 'heated' game room. I heard that there were few differences between the original side art and the one from twobits... I don't know exactly if this is true or false... but... even if it's the case, I can live with that  ;)

That sounds like a good plan, I will look around but I'm not in a hurry either.
I guess you are right about 2 bits, I saw their CPO and it's way-off. Do you know where to get a decent looking one?

I now understand. I read a lot of interesting stuff about Two Bits poor artwork quality (and poor customer handling), for instance at KLOV and Jeff Rothe's blog, and it is probably better to avoid them if you are looking for artwork.

you will have to merge the files, but everything is available there.
