"anyone looking for a gorf?" (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2349.0) was the big question andré asked a couple of weeks ago and since i was, i replied with YES ;D! a gorf arcade cabinet had been offered for sale on a pinball forum and with the help of some guys from our fabulous community ( :-*) i managed to strike a deal with the seller which of course meant roadtrip time - again! unfortunately, the seller's location was pretty far out for a single daytrip, so i decided to ask my best friend charlotte to come along for the ride. parts of her family live to the north of paris which would give us the chance to spend a nice evening in france with them and stay the night at their place.
the wheels have been set in motion, so let's get this roadtrip going - here's what's coming up
- DAY 1 -
let's start with some extremely interesting statistics ;)
here's where we want to go first ...
... and here's how long this is going to take us - at least in theory!
of course, i have to pick up charlotte first - this small sign on her door shows her french roots
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5069/5571331497_c40e6636db_b_d.jpg)
a fabulous picnic basket has already been prepared - but i'm not allowed to look inside yet, not even a tiny peek!
charlotte is using her stylish star trek phone 8) to inform her family that we're leaving lauda for france
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5230/5571331675_12d66d0e3e_b_d.jpg)
let's go, baby!
a mere 50 kilometers into this roadtrip, we're being blocked by some stupid "invention" called traffic jam! >:(
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5018/5571921294_909291e12f_b_d.jpg)
and another 100 kilometers later, a second emergency stop is necessary, but this time because charlotte asked me to. she's totally into horses and on our way to france we're passing by germany's largest "horse stuff shop" - let's go inside!
after an hour of "horse shopping", charlotte seems to be extremely happy :)
and because we're already stopping, why not have a picnic inside the car right now - i want to know what's inside that basket
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5188/5571333003_0fe984f867_b_d.jpg)
woah, i'm impressed :o :o :o
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5227/5571333133_201077d4a0_b_d.jpg)
only a small selection of the goodies waiting for us to be eaten!
honestly, those sandwitches are probably the best sandwiches E-V-E-R!!!
after that fantastic meal, we're heading into france where some of my "best friends" are already waiting for us - toll stations!
those toll fees are making me want to convert to the dark side
but i must not complain, because after some more driving, we're being treated to dinner french style
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5265/5571922872_d74c1da580_b_d.jpg)
man, i'm hungry!
but not only the food is french, how about some cidre? (by the way, i'm "wearing" a bottle cap on my head - how did it get there? ;))
the night falls on chantilly and i can almost smell the gorf just around the corner waiting to be picked up!
to be continued ...
-
It looks like a good old fashion roadtrip again!
i was thinking this morning "i want to read a roadtrip again, its been a while since somebody wrote something"
and there it was, the start of the gorf trip :spaceace:
btw excellent pic : ;D
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5137/5571332859_320eac47b5_b_d.jpg)
And her phone rocks too !
-
It is going to be interesting, can't wait to see that Gorf. :D
-
I'm just wondering about that night in Chantilly. ;)
Reminds me of a REALLY old song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4b-by5e4saI
(Which some of you guys probably can't see......)
Uhm Ully.....
....this is pretty convincing.......  ;D ;D
-
No offence, but on that pic you look (a bit) like Klaus Kinski:
;D ;D ;D
-
By the way, I never knew Andreas had a horse-stuff shop ;)
Also:
Haribo macht Kinder froh, und Erwachsenen ebenso ! ;D ;D ;D
-
Watch out on your way back because you're in the country of the gorf legs eaters.
-
By the way, I never knew Andreas had a horst-stuff shop ;)
you probably mean HORSE, because HORST is someone else ;)
-
Haha, typo corrected :)
When I hear the name Horst, there is only one man I think of:
Uhmmm, sorry I meant:

Can't wait to see the next part of the 'trip' :P

-
Nice report so far! Can't wait to see the actual cabinet.
-
the roadtrip continues ...
- DAY 2 -
the next morning, we are greeted by a sweet visitor sitting on top of my car
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5177/5571334583_f44b433ed3_b_d.jpg)
saying goodbye to the family
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5146/5571334873_16d57cf152_b_d.jpg)
the moment we've been waiting for!
here's where we're heading - a tiny village to the west of paris
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5015/5571335129_1dde3f086a_b_d.jpg)
the closer we get ...
... the more rural and the more deserted the landscape gets!
"you have reached your destination!"
before we start with the arcade part, let me introduce you to some of the protagonists of the story. first off, here's the seller's son who goes by the name of lino (or lineau / linault ?) - what a sweetie :-*
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5067/5571339133_932bf6b5fe_b_d.jpg)
up next: dogs! dogs? why dogs, you might be wondering. well, because the seller's wife is running some kind of business where people who are going on holidays can drop their dogs off so that they are being taken care of. here's just a small "selection" :P
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5228/5571931030_2065c016f5_b_d.jpg)
you will meet the seller later, because i'd like to show you his gigantic gameroom first - here's a view from the outside
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5308/5571344307_dd94a32f00_b_d.jpg)
inside, a huge collection of pinballs ... :o
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5104/5571335581_00f5208683_b_d.jpg)
... and some modern videogames. charlotte, why are you looking at that OutRunners so joyfully?
ah, now i know ;D
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5172/5571336595_59ae4105de_b_d.jpg)
and here's something a little bit more interesting than those pinball rows (at least for me), not one, but two F355
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5026/5571336819_7f986bd959_b_d.jpg)
ladies and gentlemen, on the steering wheel: jean-philippe (the seller). he tells me he has been trying to link those two machines for over a year now - without success. of course i have to play some rounds, too, and while i have to admit that the game looks kickass and sounds great, it just is not my type of game. in short: too modern ;)
enough played, JP is on a tight schedule (he has to work in the afternoon), so we better turn our attention to the gorf - or more accurately: the GORFS
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5024/5571337871_79738db3e3_b_d.jpg)
two gorfs? yes, the seller has a second one, but this is in horrible condition - especially when compared to the first one. but before i go into details, let's load gorf numero uno! and before that i have to empty the back of the car under the watchful eyes of a pride of dogs!
in it goes!
and in it is!
let's turn our attention to the second gorf
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5064/5571337669_0e82e98410_b_d.jpg)
the original joystick has been replaced by ... by ... by ... no idea what that is, but it's nasty!
inside, utter chaos
there are empty snail shells inside, the metal parts are rusted (away) and the lower part of the cabinet is swollen - this cabinet must have been out in the rain or at least in a very damp environment. because of that, i decide not to take the cabinet apart (for a later reassembly), but only take the parts home with me - it can't hurt to have spares.
let's bring it out into the open for a salvage operation
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5051/5571342083_d2109343a0_b_d.jpg)
the upper marquee: a very important part, because the one on the first machine is only in mediocre condition
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5175/5571338605_d8d3aa9280_b_d.jpg)
let me check how to remove that lover marquee
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5106/5571338953_9191e05413_b_d.jpg)
ok, only a couple of (rusted) screws
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5061/5571338791_a8eba631d7_b_d.jpg)
more parts to be salvaged on the back. these are difficult to remove because the screws are rusted in :(
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5251/5571341507_d908436c40_b_d.jpg)
but see for yourselves
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5022/5571341893_fe31d06357_b_d.jpg)
at the bottom of the cabinet ...
... i'm making a discovery!
lino is extremely curious
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5057/5580087878_22e0e32974_b_d.jpg)
french coins aka money - one hamburger and a coke, please ;)
let me kick that coin door open to see if there's more money inside the coin box (unfortunately not, but the coin box itself is a taker of course)
i also get a complete second board set :)
some of the parts i'm bringing home
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5189/5571933144_645b7b0a25_b_d.jpg)
loading time
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5184/5571340343_1a3a332d2f_b_d.jpg)
everything's inside the car: the parts ...
... and the cabinet :-*
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5178/5571343277_f65e84b75a_b_d.jpg)
everyone is happy now - even lino
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5252/5571933906_c75f27611e_b_d.jpg)
oh, i almost forgot: jean-philippe had sent me pictures of other cabinets he has (had?) for sale and while there was nothing in there for me, i don't want to keep those back from you. first up, a smokey joe
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5253/5571330651_6f75f26e9d_d.jpg)

and the most interesting one (at least for me) paddle battle. unfortunately, this one has been converted to breakout (conversion from hell), otherwise i might have considered getting it!
saying goodbye to an almost empty gorf ...
... means also saying goodbye to jean-philippe, his wife, his lovely son and tons of dogs! goodbye, tiny french village, thx for having us!!!
from village to city (again)! on our way back we have to pass through paris :ghost:
a looot of traffic and many traffic jams - it takes us forever to get "to the other side"
the counter is flipping over - 1000 kilometers down and counting ...
still many many more to go! charlotte, can you already see the light at the end of the tunnel?
after what seems to have been endless hours on the road, we arrive home safely with the following statistics

It's very European to have the washer/drier in the kitchen ..
Always surprises me when I see this.

Nice trip Ully !
That Gorf is beat up, but its going to get the SuperUlly Treatment some day, so i am sure it will be in excellent shape again !
Thanks for sharing the story ! :spaceace:
-
Wow, that was a long, long trip, but that lovely Gorf worth it.
You travelled thorugh really nice places. :D
Did you see that Zaccaria Locomotion in the background ;)

when i saw the kid looking as his dad, and the picture behind, i would guess it was "bally ballo" place ;D
-
Great road trip Ully, as usual! :-*
I've already seen pictures of Bally Ballo's game room... HUGE! And the legendary F355 Challenge *triple screen* road trip here (http://www.gamoover.net/Forums/index.php?topic=18875.32). :o
Regarding this picture :
Back in the days the operators do not bother to replace the joystick by the original one. I do not have a Gorf, but I got this spare part (thanks Zorg) ... not for the Gorf panel itself, but for the flight stick on it, for my G-LOC ;D

...oh, and ... of course

The evil galactic empire will kidnapp Ully and make him their leader, if they will see this pic. ;D
-
Very cool roadtrip report 8) 8) 8)
Result:
France -1
Germany +1
;D ;D ;D
-
Excellent choice of cab you got yourself there and that kind of roadtrip story makes me really feel like I was there. Love it!
+ sniffing the (pin)balls all day long, that's what I call a dog's life...
-
Looking great Ully, congrates with the buy (maby i can buy the GORF from you know where) ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Looking great Ully, congrates with the buy (maby i can buy the GORF from you know where) ;D ;D ;D ;D
yes you can, michael, but only if i can get the ASTEROIDS DELUXE from you know where ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Very interesting:
Was the PCB etc. in there ?
I thought that the cab would be exactly like the original Video Pinball but just with the bezel replaced, but this has a weird kickplate area and (OMG) woodgrain on the sides ?!?!
-
Was the PCB etc. in there ?
i don't know, andré, because i never got to see the cab. the seller sent me those pics beforehand and since i told him "not interested" he didn't bring any of them over from his storage!
-
Yeah already thought it was a picture not up to your standards ;)
I knew about the bezel, I think through Rich from TOG....I wonder where those machines were produced. It does have the Atari logo so it's not likely that it's a bootleg.
It's in pretty sad shape :-\
The GORF is in safe hands now and it looks like it's a great project for you. I expect it to be ready for Eurocade ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
Can't remember, did anything actually work ?
