Euro Dig Dug Restoration
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:43:27 PM »
I've seen quite a few of you guys have one of these cabs, here's the restoration I recently finished on mine.

Here are some pics I took when it first arrived. The monitor had vertical collapse but it appeared to be running the game ok, however it was impossible to tell if there were any pcb issues.

Cab is good and solid, few little touch ups needed here and there. Inside is full o' crap and it needs a thorough clean. Obviously the control panel needs some work and a new overlay. All the metalwork is rusty and will need stripping back & repainting.

The sound works but is distorted so that will need looking at, and none of the coin lights or start button lights are working. Lots to do, but should come out very nice.

The very first thing I wanted to do was get some proper feet on it, every time I moved it you could hear it rubbing on the floor and see little flakes of the wood left behind.

Made some room and flipped it on its back. Easy to see the problem, but at least the base is good and solid!

Broke in to my supply of new teflon feet & t-nuts.

Old feet out with the help of a lump hammer

They are well f*cked! New feet fitted, no more scraping the base and it makes the cab nice and easy to shift around now.

Monitor went off to have: A cap kit. Dry joints reflowed. Fix blown vertical output transistor. Fix blown frame IC.

Now we have a lovely crisp picture, and also can see the game is running 100%  :)

Jamma+ forum member whitecomet did some work on the vectoring of the cpo for me, modifying the existing vector of the U.S. version.

Got started on the cleanup.

Loom completely removed:

Power brick:

Old T-Molding removed:

ARII, this will be given a going over as it's the likely suspect for the sound problem.

Cab is now empty.

All inside areas of the cab have been cleaned up and polished.

Clean up of the outsides now.

Did the sides - First a good polish, then a rub with Novus 2, then filled in scratches with some furniture touch-in paint, then novus 1, and another polish.

Before:

After, almost perfect now:

Gave the loom a good scrubbing

And straight out on the washing line with it!

Vector work on the CPO has been finished, thanks very much Jason  :)

I printed out a draft copy and made a few small adjustment for spacing and altered the colours a little to match the what I've got left of the original CPO.

Power brick cleaned up.

Before:

After:

Bought replacement screws, bolts & washers to replace the rusty ones.

Photo of the new CPO draft print on the actual panel, old overlay behind - it's a very good match  :)

Had to move the pump text and start button graphics but that was it.

Thought I'd better strengthen the front base of the cab as it was flaking a bit, so flipped it on its back again. Gave any loose areas a good brush of pva and had to get a bit constructive with my clamps!

New CPO has arrived:

It's come out superbly.

Next to what's left of my original you can see the colours are spot on! Was well worth spending time getting draft prints done to match it up  :)

That arriving gave me a push to get on with prepping the metalwork for some de-rusting, and fresh paint.

New T-Molding gets fitted. Makes such a difference to a cab putting nice new shiny stuff on, and so simple to fit as well - apart from having to flip the cab in its back then on its side on your own of course

Start refitting the loom and pcb's. I've used all new screws and bolts for all the fixings so far.

All done, here's how it looked so far.

Time to rebuild the coin doors.
Unfortunately there were a lot of missing parts when the cab arrived - the switches and lamp holders were present, as was the wiring but no mounting plates or actual reject/entry slots, or any locks.

A rummage through my spares and I couldn't believe that I'd actually kept the exact bits needed from a cab long, long gone!  :)

These things are a pain in the ass to rebuild! Had to take the door off and put it together on the floor, but now it's all in (minus mechs) and I'm very pleased to see it back how it should be.

Metalwork has all been given a fresh coat of matt black paint and looks infinitely better.

Cleaned up, touched up and reattached the monitor shroud.

Top part refitted to cab, makes a massive difference!
Bezel given a good polish with novus and it's come out well.

Time to apply the new CPO.

Get it in to the correct position checking the button holes line up and the edges are straight from top to bottom. I'm happy to see it is the right size with just a few mm overlap on either side.

Move the clips down and cut away a section of the backing paper. Good spray of water then apply, you can peel and stick a few times to get it correctly positioned. Once it's right squeegee out the water.

Once the first section is applied it's easier to do the rest. Take your time on the curves and work a few mm at a time peeling the backing away as you go. Last bit applied and a little bit to trim from the hinges. Move the clips to the top and bottom areas where it's most likely to peel.

Nice new craft blade to cut out the button holes and I can stick everything back together.

Here it was when I got it:

And here it is now:

Control Panel reattached to the cab:

Cash box & service panel mounted. Think I'm about done with this one!

So here it is all finished, I'm really proud of this one, it's been the most difficult resto I've done so far I think as it's needed work doing to every part of the cab. It's come out better than I was expecting.

Big thanks to Ross Hamilton for the cab, WhiteComet for the vector work on the cpo, tb2000 for sorting the monitor and anyone else who gave advice on certain bits & pieces, as always my restorations take full advantage of the community!  :spaceace:

Excellent job and great pics !!!

That must be the "nudest" AR-2 I've ever seen.....does it actually have the sound amp on it ? And how did you fix the sound problems you mentioned ?

I had to strip down the volume pot and give it a light sanding as it was completely seized, this partly cured the problem, but I'm just about to rebuild the AR2 - there's really not much on there! Q5 and Q7 Tda's can cause distorted audio, and I also need to do the 'sense mod' to prevent any future voltage overload.

I've only ever seen the side art mentioned on here...If I found some I probably would put it on the cab, but I can't say I've ever seen a cab with it!

I think most operators didn't care a thing about the side-art, it's not like it was going to make it make more money with it....

But I like it and would put it on if it is available....

I vote against the sensee mod. It's not a cure, it's hiding the real problem.

Maybe a little off-topic.. But do you have a picture of it?
