WTB: Capcom CPS II Motherboard and games
« on: October 25, 2012, 10:41:20 AM »
Hi folks,

does anybody have a spare Capcom CPS II Motherboard for blue modules?
I'm also looking for "Shadow of Mystara" by SSI / AD&D for the Capcom System.

Anybody familiar with their "suicide battery" problem?

You can read about it here http://junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php/CPS-2
I quoted a section about the suicide battery and Phoenixing

Quote
Suicide
The term suicide battery is used to describe the problem that arises when a CPS-2 board battery expires. Capcom encrypted the program ROMs in these in order to protect them against piracy, and the encryption keys are kept alive by a 3.6 1/2 AA battery in the B board. The scheme worked quite well, however when the battery is exhausted the encryption keys are lost and the game stops working.
There are two ways to deal with this problem: preventing it by changing the battery in regular intervals, a five year period is usually recommended; and after a board is dead, they can be Phoenixed by CPS Shock.

Phoenix Edition
Phoenixing a board is a controversial matter for some, and a convenience to others. It is argued that a Phoenix board is technically a bootleg and it certainly is since the program ROMs are not the original ones, even if all the rest is kept identical. It is convenient for others since a Phoenixed board doesn't need maintenance by changing the battery and spending time and money every few years, plus you eliminate the risk of a battery leakage. As a plus a Phoenix board has a menu that allows the region of the board to be changed, giving access to different languages and region specific extras in a few cases.

I have a Phoenixed Pro-Gear board myself. Game plays exactly the same as original.
Since it's Phoenixed it can't suicide anymore. You can only arguee about it not being a 100% original anymore.

I don't know a specific person. If not on here, maybe someone on the Arcade Otaku forum?
It is a matter of burning a few Eproms I think. That should not be too hard if you have the right hardware.
But I could be wrong.

Hi Guys
Just to let you all know that I have 20 repro DK Coin Doors in stock - at last!

Many delays - first supplier took ages, then lost my drawing, then lost my original door!  Got another original luckily, broke my ankle twice! etc etc.

Anyway, doors sitting here ready to be shipped to people who order one.

Cheers
Frank
