Fired up Break Out ...
« on: May 19, 2012, 11:08:17 PM »
A looooooooong time ago,

somewhere in the beginning of this crazy hobby

I raided a warehouse, and got me some cabs: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1379.0

And finally, today I was able to inspect one of them closer, named Breakout

This is how she looks today, a bit filthy.

But the bezel and marquee are still in damn good shape, A+ I would say

And the internals also seem to be in a pretty good shape. Unfortunately I don´t have a key of the backdoor, but I could fetch the power cable through the coin door.

So, would she play, or wouldn´t she?

YES, she plays:

Everything seems to be working, game (although there are a few issues), marquee light, sound, CP light and the spinner (although not very responsive). This puts a big smile on my face. Also because this was also inside:

All in all not too bad.

First thing to focus on is the spinner. Some tips where to start?

Damn.....that warehouse sure delivered some great working games !!!! ;)

Amazingly it is especially the very old BW games that seem to have survived the best ! :)

Breakout doesn't have a spinner but a dead simple potmeter.

Open the CP, replace pot.
That's the best idea.

It is in very nice shape indeed and if a simple pot really helps, it will be fully working soon. :D
Congrats!

This is an US built game, but it looks like it was intended for the European market from its birth

Yep, as does the whole cab, pretty amazing. I only need to replace the laminate on the front to make it a real beauty. The game is from 1976, 36 years!! A real piece of history, as are hundreds of other games of course.

Yup. Big chance. They're not cheap but IMHO if there is one thing that spoils a Pong (like) game it's a jittery paddle....

You could try a "bath" with contact cleaner and "washing the contact cleaner out afterwards". Ask RobinHolland for tips :P

I started to work on Breakout again, after a long break. And I need a bit of technical advice and guidance.

Let´s start with the (original) monitor, it is still in good condition, of course some burn in, but the colours of the bricks and paddle are still very, very vibrant and colourful.  ;)  The only issue is that the image is too narrow (I can tell from the burn in that it used to be much wider), but I hope that a pot on the chassis will solve that. Or is there another known issue with these monitors?

All sounds and lights are working.  :)

About the paddle pot, it jitters a lot when turned. And I think that the pot isn´t original because the shaft is too long, the knob is more than 1 cm. above the panel. Could there be an issue with the pot (5K) or with the game board? And who can point me to a good replacement pot in The Netherlands, without having to order for a certain amount?

Worst issue: the gameplay is not OK, the ball runs straight through visible bricks and bounces against non-visible bricks. It does recognize the walls properly though. Where do I start to solve this issue? The  ball also travels with a very high speed, but that could because be of some dipswitch settings. I haven´t checked that yet.
