Regretfully people, there will be no heroic road-trip pics for picking this up. It was too far away for me to pick up in one day and I was somewhat in a hurry to get it.

Luckily I found a transport guy through UKvac who will bring it from the UK to the low countries....

What's that ....? What you say ?? You want to see the sides ??

Ahhh, yeahh...mmm OK !

You really have the arcade gods on your side, look in what timeframe you got all the parts you need !

Great deal though, buy a coindoor, and end up with a cabinet which was still around it and which has the correct sidearts  ;D

Yep....it is almost a miracle !

As so often the story is a bit longer about this cab. Some weeks after I bought the Asteroids shell from ChrisChrisChrisChrisChris I was contacted by "someone in the family" about this cab being for sale. He considered buying it but was unsure about getting all the parts for it and decided to tip me about it.

I had to think some time about it because I really don't have anymore space for cabs and already had the Asteroids shell of course.

However...the longer I thought about it, the better this offer was:
First of all, I will not have to buy side-art for it. As the pics show the side are in good shape. On side has some scratches but for me this is about the same condition as my Galaxian and I don't feel the need to replace it.
Second, I didn't need a Lunar Lander harness anymore. I had already ordered it from Dokert on KLOV forum, but I messaged him about this find and he understood and had no problem with me canceling my main harness. The Control Panel harness however I still need and was already waiting to be shipped.

Anyway, if I add those two things up I already get pretty far towards the price I had to pay for the LL. Apart from that it of course has the original coin door and well.....it IS an original Lunar Lander cab, and what can possibly be better than bringing that back to it's old glory ?

But the advantages didn't stop there. Since the LL had been converted to Asteroids it has the Asteroids marquee and CP already. OK, the CP will need a good restoration, but it's certainly doable. So...with the monitor from Remi that I fixed, plus the working Asteroids PCB I already bought YEARS ago plus the power brick from Béla and the ARI board from Remi I should be able to turn this into an (at least) running Asteroids !! I will need an Asteroids harness and of course bezel, but those are pretty easy to get.

So, this was a win-win-win situation for me.

Now I have a couple of options:
1) Restore the Asteroids completely and sell my Asterock
2) Restore the Asteroids completely and sell it and keep the Asterock
3) Make the Asteroids running and sell as project cab

You guys know I have a weak spot for bootlegs, and Sidam definitely stole my heart because of their quality in design, cab-build quality and PCB quality. I also love the CP because it's more comfortable than the original (If you see LL, you finally understand why Asteroids had such an insanely large CP for just 5 buttons). And the Asterock is simply in a very very nice condition and I will have to invest a lot of time (and some money) to get the Asteroids back into shape....so yet _another_ project cab...
Another plus of the Asterock is that it is a decent size, which is nice in my small gameroom.

However....the thought of having an original Asteroids and a Lunar Lander cab right next to each other does make me feel a bit tingly inside ;)

Now....there was one more nice thing included in this deal......and that is this  ;D ;D ;D:

You lucky bastard!! :o :o  Everything falls right into place, you must feel pretty good!  ;D

Keep the asteroids, it's too iconic to let go. Asterock is nice, but still a (cool) bootleg.

Will the LL be ready for eurocade?

Did you see what that PCB is ? It's a Lunar Lander, but converted to Asteroids !  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Probably the most valuable Asteroids board ever (apart from the LL board that was "hacked" into Asteroids at Atari)

The interesting thing is: WHO hacked this ? Is this a bootleg job ? Has anyone ever seen it before ? And of course the question jumps to mind: Can I convert it back, or maybe make it switchable (that will probably be tough) ??

It's unknown if it works though...

One thing I forgot: I do have to thank the "member of the family" here for tipping me about this great cab !!!!!!!!!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :space ace:

Well, let's assume that the LL PCB from Archer works, then I see little reason for it to not be ready for Eurocade :) :)

Congrats  :)
The pcb looks factory converted to Asteroids

Yeah, it does look like a very professional job.

The board doesn't have an Atari markings though. Have you seen others converted like this ?

No real proof yet that it's a factory conversion. The Asteroids marque/CP has no Atari logo, neither does the top side of the daughter card on the PCB. No Atari labels at all. That said, who ever did it did a professional job using the Atari artwork and it's hard to imagine a 3rd party doing an LL conversion kit this neatly (or an op installing it this neatly). If there are op magazines from that era, it'd be worth going over them  to see if anyone offered a kit like this in the small ads. It'd also be interesting to see if there is an Atari logo or part code etched in the metal on the underside of the daughterboard...

A bit of an oddity that cab. Spotted in the local paper, it came out of someones house in East Anglia in the late 90's. Both monitor and PCB dead. Got the monitor going and did a custom adaptor to run the Asteroids Delux PCB in it (preserving the LL wiring). It was running at my "leaving for the US meet" in 2000 but ended the day with vertical collapse. It's the very-different first edition of the G05 - I'm not even sure if it's the same wiring or power as the later Asteroids G05.

Thanks for commenting Paul :) And thanks for a great deal !!!

Yeah that job has not the typical "op" trademarks ;) It would sure be pretty special if it is factory I guess.... :)

I don't worry about the monitor at all. Pretty sure I'll get it running fine, got some experience with the G05's in my Asterock and the one from Remi now :)

In all honesty, I think the older G05-801 looks to be a better design than the later G05-802. It has proper heat-sinks for both the power transistors (which were later replaced by the huge resistors on the deflection PCB on the -802) and the deflection transistors. I like that idea much more than using the frame of the monitor, which isn't exactly a great type of metal ("pisbakken staal" we call it ;)) compared to the aluminum and specially shaped heat-sinks...

Of course I have no experience with the 801 yet, but from what I've read in the manual and seen on pics on the net I'd say all the changes on the -802 were done for cost reduction reasons...

I'll do everything possible to keep the original monitor in ! :)

The 802 has different connectors then the 801. There are adapters though so it's not hard to change if I really MUST swap it out...

I'm very glad you made that LL to AD adapter and didn't hack the harness :) :)

Re: old G05 - it has one unfortunate flaw - when the deflection transitors blow short it's supposed to blow the fuse however what actually happens is that it blows the power supply transistor along with the fuse. Found that the hard way - fixed the blown power supply so it was working nice, plugged in the deflection PCB and the fuse pops and kills the power supply transistor again. >:(

I did dump the ROMS from that LL PCB but I'm not sure if the dump is good or if they ended up in MAME. I remember running them up in MAME and got something out of them.

Re: The Asty Delux PCB - it has the audio output level resistors changed on the PCB to make it compatible with the LL AR PCB. If you ever need to use it in an Asty Delux cab, you'll need to change the resistors back for the correct audio output level.

Paul.

Nice and really lucky find André! :o
I would definitely keep the Asteroids cab, the Asterock looks very nice and tidy indeed and we all know, that you put a lot of energy to make it perfect, but a LL and an Asteroids next to each other would be kick-ass! :D

Great stuff going on here!  :)

AFAIK, Speleo is looking for an empty Asteroids cab  ;) ;D
