Yep it's definitely gone for 95%. The "rest" is hum from the speakers but it's WAAAAAYYY silent compared to the transformer(s).

Anyway, still opened the amp and controller units to have a look today.....because I felt a 40 year old machine might need some new caps.....

Going to be an expensive cap-kit !!! Of course they are all axial. They actually look amazingly good for their age, no leaks....
I think those big one's might be paper caps.... look at the date-code on the biggest one, 7026 (1970, week 26)....almost as old as I am :P

Gonna be fun to measure them tomorrow, I'm _really_ interested in what they will show :)

Replacing is going to cost......axial is already much more expensive and I guess I'm going to want some audio-quality one's for this baby....

Just another picture:

The bottom (or top ?) side of the amp.

The switches from top to bottom:
-scratch compensation (of course turned on minimum)
-treble (three positions)
-bass
-record equalization, not sure what this exactly does...

All of them will need some good cleaning, maybe replacing. They sound scratchy when moved. In wrong position (half-way between two "selections" f.i.) it definitely influences the sound quality....

THe terminals are for the speakers. Need to find out why the right bass speakers isn't working....

Planning on replacing the speakers (in due time). I think it can sound a _LOT_ better with some better quality speakers....

intersting to follow your write-ups, andré. although a jukebox is a completely different "instrument", it also has "arcadian ingredients" like caps and ballasts which could go bad over the years!
all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

I am also curious to the result of the cap measuring.

i think those caps look still very good after all those years.

i think you dont have many failure caps in there

Yeah they look very good ! Not sure if they really are paper caps although the outside looks like cardboard to me... they definitly must be electrolytic one's though....

Did you notice the old-fashioned build up of all the electronics ? Only a few small PCB's a lot of the other stuff is simply mounted "in free air". The large caps are mounted with a clamp which will prove to be another hurdle to find (fitting) replacements....

Gonna do some first measurements right.....now !

Well.....its amazing. The really big ones seem to be in TOP condition !
F.I. the largest one is specced at 2700 uF. It shows over 3500uF and an ESR of just 0.08 !!!
All the other large ones show similar values !

Im impressed !!!
The large ones are Sprague branded and made in the USA.
The small aluminium ones show good values too. These are Siemens caps.

Looks like no cap-kit is needed !!

if there is a cap that dont fit, (smaller) you can wrap tape around it untill the old diameter is reached, i have a roll of cupper tape if you need
or maybe just normal tape, or some piece of rubber (oude binnenband van fiets ofzo :D)

I have a feeling that the older the cap the more chance is that its good, i mean back in the days they still made good stuff instead of crappy parts.

(less "wegwerp maatschappij")

sorry for some dutch expressions guys, i dont know how to say that in english ;)

at first i thought the jukebox  :D

you know how much is a capkit, and also how much work it is, so if there is only 1 bad cap, this will be a good idea i think  ;)

Collapse ? Horizontal or vertical line ? Could be more serious than a cap...

My dk was much worse so don't worry, with a little help from my friends this baby will be up and running in no time.
