[Report] An Arcadian Weekend (Roadtrip and more ...)
« on: May 19, 2011, 04:52:45 PM »
the last weekend was a blast! :)

in fact, it was so nice that i want to share with you in full detail what happened - so brace yourself for three days of summer, sun and (arcade) fun! 8)

DAY 1 - FRIDAY

it all started on friday in the afternoon when i got a call from patrick that the harvest is going to start soon and in order to drive the huge harvester out of the barn, we have to re-arrange the storage. why? well, over the last couple of months, i had been dropping a couple of cabs off in front of the harvester because i was too lazy to drag them to their final storage position. payback time!

there's still a lot of space in the storage and this is where most of the "unsorted" cabs have to go

starting off with the out run - a machine which is incredibly heavy!

just in case someone is interested in it - shoot me an offer, i might sell it ...

up next was the gorf! patrick pushed so hard while i was behind the machine that i almost got smashed between two cabs :o (not the worst kind of death though i have to say :P)

i was really stuck between the cabs and could hardly get out

next to and behind the two machines, hidden underneath the tarps, are a system 1 cab, zookeeper and mad planets

up next was the dig dug cabaret and a pretty ugly-looking gigantonormous cabinet - who wants to make a guess what game that is?

slowly but surely, we started building a nintendo row (the mario bros on the right is going to become either a donkey kong or a popeye - i haven't decided yet)

one more nintendo added

and the last one - one year ago, i never thought i would ever own an original dedicated nintendo cabinet, let alone four!

already looking nice, although it's still far from where i want those cabs to be. but wait until i've moved, then it's going to be a completely different story!

DAY 2 - SATURDAY MORNING

the next days started early (at least for a saturday)

the sun was already up in a beautiful sky

first destination of the day: the biggest flea market in the area

apart from board games (which i'm also collecting), i'm always on the lookout for cool 70s / 80s games and gadgets. eventually, i want to place some of those in a display cabinet in my gameroom. this time, i was extremely successful, here are the nicest things i found, for example a tipp kick soccer game! although i already have two (or three?) of these, it can't hurt to have additional players, goalies and soccer fields. i can't tell you how much i l-o-v-e tipp kick and whoever wants to challenge me you're more than welcome to try ;D

even better, i found a guy who was selling off a nice collection of ernő rubik puzzle games (the second famous hungarian i know ;)) along with the corresponding solution / hint books and while i already had most of those games (except for the last one), i was more than thrilled to find those - for a nice price! 8) (note that i took the following pictures at home in my apartment)

i was already one happy camper because of those great finds, but believe me, the day was about to get even better ... stay tuned and watch this space!

i know what you're talking about, luckily i have two now. however, i'm not very good at that puzzle. especially when compared to a friend of mine who can do it blind :o

that flea market find last saturday has rekindled my interest in 80s puzzle games (and those solution books), i'll have to browse ebay for more stuff ;D. if you have any suggestions which ones are worth getting, please let me know. btw, i'm not looking for cheap modern china remakes, i'm only interested in 80s stuff - especially rubik!

currently on my most-wanted list: rubik's snake! there are some of them available in hungary ... :)

You really should focus on getting a new house, all those beautiful cab's deserve to be together in one room.  ;D ;)

Btw, I see on vaps that you also own a Ikari Warriors? Is that the one from Belgium?

I'm sure you'll find one eventually, that's going to be one hell of a game room.  :D Forgot about the Ikari Warriors from Belike, great game!
Always wondered why games like that aren't very popular amongst collectors? Same goes for 1942/3.

I love 1942. THE problem with it is that there never were any original cabs around here.So that's why it's not much "searched" by collectors..

The last time I visited Homerson at Scheveningen they still had a 1942 up and running in an ugly cab with a monitor that was SCREAMING for a cap-kit, but it was still there ;)

Great find for you Ully. Personally, I never liked the Rubrik's stuff. I hate puzzling in general, and this was the ultimate puzzle in the 80's !

It's a nice 80's item though ! :)

i've just ordered this book on amazon germany (nice price) - i'm sure it will bring back some great memories of long-forgotten 80s toys (and there's even an arcade section inside)!

Hah, the technical side of me popped up again and I pretty soon disassembled my cousin's cube and put it back "finished".....he was amazed that I solved it ! :P

DAY 2 – EARLY SATURDAY AFTERNOON

after the flea market i set the navsat for my next destination

one last turn before hitting base

and here i am! not for the first time though, because a couple of weeks ago i had been here on a mission for bela to pick up some zaccaria glass bezels and a super breakout machine for an austrian arcade friend of mine. this time however, it was (mostly) about me :P

the seller's location: really nice, isn't it? his father had an arcade business back in the days and now that his dad is old, he's selling off all the stuff still left - mostly glass bezels and arcade flyers. however, he also has a place (a warehouse?) where he's picking up arcade machines and pinballs regularly to sell them off on ebay ...

first look inside his storage - one of many

a cool-looking jukebox ...

... and a universal cocktail table - ready to be sent off to some unknown location!

on the other side, three (out of four) arcade machines - wanna make a guess which one's going to be mine soon?

i'll give you some seconds to think about it, in the meantime let's focus on the fourth game in the row: a d-day! this one is going to the danish arcade museum

have a look at that fabulous sideart - just incredible!

alright, time to reveal: of course you've already figured out that i'm not here for a generic cab or for the magic worm (more on that later though), i'm here for KLAX

this one was listed on ebay.de and i think i got it for a pretty nice price, especially when considering the almost immaculate condition the cabinet is in. from all the past experiences i have, this is definitely the nicest-looking cabinet (condition-wise) i have picked up so far!

the only thing worth mentioning (apart from some wood damage in the lower left back corner) are two dings on the control panel (and some dust)

the only thing? nope, there's something else: the cabinet comes with the wrong game, asterix, but since is already from the jamma-era, it can be swapped out easily!

let's check out the other stuff, for example sidam's magic worm

i like that coin door - very unique!

not many plays on the 5 marks counter

thorsten, the seller, wanted to show me the working condition of the game

and of course i had to play a round (or two ;)) myself

i have to admit: a very nice centipede-clone indeed

but i was not only here to pick up my klax, i had also agreed to bring some stuff for fellow forum members. here's throsten (with his head "merged" into the white of the wall :D) going through his collection of NOS glass bezels

out of those two zaccaria scamble bezels, ...

... i've chosen this one for erik aka ckong

in other storage rooms of the complex there's a space firebird cocktail table (which is going to be picked up by my austrian friend alex soon)

also present: some pinballs and dart machines

for bela, i'm taking this sound board (no idea what it is for though)

the klax loaded inside my car - as you can see i used some plastic wrap to protect the sideart

every single time i'm amazed again how easily those giant cabs fit into my car

the "elektro-mobile" amidst a beautiful scenery - take me home!

mr. cool 8)

of course, no roadtrip is complete without a "healthy meal"

yummy!!!

at home, the necessary statistics: one country, three counties, 494 kilometers, 8 hours 9 minutes on the road - this roadtrip is OFFICIALLY OVER!

the proud new owner (man, i need some popcorn ;))

if you thought this was the end of it you're wrong - more surprises are just around the corner ...
all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!
