My first project... scratch build Dig Dug
« on: May 30, 2010, 09:14:01 PM »
One of the first games I played first, as far as I can remember, was Dig Dug. And since I find it fun to do some DIY why not combine the two? It will not be featuring the original PCB but instead I will put in the 60-in-1. Main reason for this is that I like a lot of the 80's classics but I only have space for a few cabinets. Ordered some stuff at the various places and the waiting begun. After a while (and being ripped of by the Tax Office), most of the goods are in; Marquee, Control Panel, Coin Door and a bunch of small stuff. Bought some MDF, started drawing and cutting. The result so far:

Unfortunately, I forgot to unload my car and my wife took it to go to her mom... So I guess this is it for today. Already cleaned the CP, placed a new stick, and however it might be needing a new CPO I'm fine with it now.

The side art and bezel will be printed here in Holland.

There are still some parts left I'm looking for:
1) A monitor... Any news on the 19"/21"'s?
2) (NOS) Wico centering grommit
3) Bezel retainer
4) Marquee retainer

If any of you guys have something laying araound, drop me a note. Stay tuned...

Great, have a lot of fun with the project. I think that I know the answer already, but because a 60 in 1 is a bit like having Mame in the cab, are you going to use a CGA monitor or a VGA monitor (some of us might not know that the 60 in 1 has CGA and VGA output)?

Thx!

Well, I would love to have a real arcade monitor in it, but since this is looking to become a nightmare to get them I probably will end up with a VGA monitor... I know, the 60-in-1 it isn't the real thing but IMHO more in the direction of the real deal then a Mameified cab. Sure, having all my dedicated dreamcabs would be great, but I do share this house with my wife... And as long as my budget doesn't even come close to the dreamhouse I guess I'll have to live with it. ;)

You could of course first try a regular CRT TV  with RGB Scart input.

I know, but I'm a bit afraid of tubes which have a lot of current on them... On the other hand, Marktplaats is offering them rather cheap, so interesting enough to play around with.

If you take the normal precautions, you will not have to be afraid for a new hair coupe, or something like that. Decharging a monitor is a piece of cake (said the guy who almost wet his pants the first time he did. Nothing happened though  :) ), there are very useful guidelines on the web, and nice video's on youtube which show you how to do it.

And the TV's can be get for an apple and an egg, so it is worth a try.

looking good so far, barry. good luck with your ongoing built, but is it just me or does imageshack suck big time? extremely slow and ad popups. why don't you use something like flickr and insert the pictures directly into your posting? would make it much easier and more enjoyable, at least that's what i think!
all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

I would follow Ckon his advice, do not put a vga monitor in the cabinet, the games will look like shit.
Buy a TV and ask here for help, I'm sure somebody can help you. I also have a 60-1 and no complains, it's a very cheap an easy solution.
Good luck with the cabinet.

Finally had some time to do some work on my baby... I decided not to go for the metal hooks used by some of us but instead go to old fashioned way Atari did back in the day. I'm building it from the ground up. The result so far:

en profil...

The inside (duh...)

I'm pretty happy with the result so far, especially given the fact that I'm no carpenter at all and the measurements are a combination of measurements taken by Muerto (many thanks for that!) and taken from the side art...

My switched power supplies and Jamma harnesses also came in today, ordered the 60-in-1 board and I bought 2 TV's on Marktplaats. However, I have planned the TV's to be a temporary solution until we are ready for the group buy of original arcade monitors.  ;)

To be continued...
