Cleaning joysticks

Just cleaned one of my red tent joysticks. Now I need to know which type of grease/oil I need to keep them working smooth.
I used something similar to this :

will this do or do i need something thicker?

For my Donkey Kong joystick, I used WD40 to degrease and clean it. And after cleaning, the thicker yellow/brown vaseline-like grease to grease it.

IIRC the manual specifies a certain type of greasing....

I use white lithium grease, it won't gum-up over time.
