'Business' Area : Buy/Sell/Trade / FREE: Akuma 3D gun game
« on: February 06, 2016, 04:12:24 PM »
Offering this here as well as ukvac because I know a lot of people here are into restoration and preservation.

For some years I've had an Akuma machine - it's a strange 3D gun game which uses a CRT and a projector at once to create a depth effect, horror themed.  It's been 'mostly' working for some time and several times I've considered parting it out.  In fact I went in there today looking at the logistics of parting it and .... I can't do it.  I can't kill a rare game.

As such, this is free now to anyone who will collect it, on the basis that they must intend to finish the restoration and keep it (or sell it to a collector, I don't really care as long as it's not broken up).  It hasn't been powered up in over a year, last time it was the UPS was not working correctly and the gun focus/reads weren't great, projector settings I had perfect but forgot to save them...  Some cab cosmetics are required.

It's a bit dusty since then but has essentially not been touched since the article was posted.  It's huge:

Dimensions:
Width: 91cm
Height: 198cm
Depth (main cab): 100cm including back extension, 75cm without.
Depth of pedestal: 46cm (you wouldn't have it bolted flush though - add about a foot in the middle, no idea what the correct distance should be.

I'm in the UK so you'll need to be willing to pay someone to collect this, or happy to rent a very large van yourself.  It's on wheels, laying it down flat very likely not an option due to weight of CRT.

Consider this a project machine although it /seems/ to mostly work now.

This is a 3D gun game which uses a CRT and a projector to create an effective 3D effect.  It's PC based, pretty rare as far as I can tell, I don't expect many were made and this is serial 001.  Music is really awesome, cool looking cab.

Details:
* Everything is there.
* The projector was broken when it was delivered to me, and I spent over £300 getting it repaired, new lamp too.
* It seems to work - it did die on me an hour after I'd got it running again today, swapping the RAM seemed to wake it back up (note RAM will need changing down to PC2100, the stuff I had spare is too fast and causes a boot warning about timings), but really the whole thing needs going over properly.  Assume unreliable.
* The guns themselves seem ok - I pulled apart all the sheathing and rebuilt them today - lots of screws are missing, they calibrate fine in test mode but aren't wonderfully reliable in game - suspect adjustment of screen/projector brightness might help.  Recoil works.
* The machine has a UPS for keeping the fans running during shutdown (including projector), it looks standard enough but it's making error sounds and isn't doing the job anymore, so I suspect this needs replacing.
* Front feet are missing from the pedestal, bolts broken clean off the weld.
* Tunnel to hold pedestal and main unit together is missing
* Wood damage to top of cabinet, sign is cracked in half and repaired.
* Connectors for pedestal have been redone and are in excellent shape.
* Includes 2 or 3 spare correct model power supplies (I thought the original had broken once upon a time, really the BIOS battery needed replacing!), and a spare faulty projector for parts.

£250 and its yours, less than the loss I'm making ;)  Collection from Cambridge, you're going to want to tail lift this one, it's on wheels and rolls around easily but it's tall and heavy.

It's been a difficult decision as I only recently restored this machine, but I'm selling my Missile Storm due to space reasons.

Topic about the restoration here:

Various photos here:

The first four are of the machine finished, the rest are a mixture of pre and post restoration, and of both the machines I had (unrestored one is already sold).  I'm looking for 500 pounds, the machine is in Cambridge UK.  Only remaining job is to remake the back door as the existing one is from a different Sidam cab, not quite large enough and very tatty - but with a new bit of wood it has the right trim parts to re-use.

Fixed.
LS27 was looking bad but after replacement no change.  LS08 however looked good, and was actually bad!

Selling my spare Missile Storm now, it's the older art type (smaller logo, silver coin door, different bezel).  This one and the one I'm keeping (later art type) are the only two currently known to still exist so it's quite a rarity.  Game is a bootleg of Missile Command.

Side art is very good both sides, coin door is in good shape and will polish up nicely altough 3/6 of the studs are broken off at the back.  I still have the stud parts if you want to get them welded back on.  Marquee has been touched up at the back, you can't tell where I've done this as it was around the edges on the black.  Bezel is very good too and holding together well.  Control panel will clean up well but an overside button has been fitted - can't tell if this was a factory hack or operator hack.  Replacing it with a black outer/white inner would make it less obtrusive.  Metalwork under control panel will need restoration or perhaps even remaking due to corrosion - it's a simple sheet with 2 folds.  Back door is missing.

Trackball has been rebuilt with new bearings, it thunks a bit on one axis due to a flat spot on the roller.  Coin door lighting and marquee lighting works (new bulbs on the door, strange flying wire types).  Power supply completely rebuilt - new line filter, caps and diodes - voltages all correct and match my other machine.  Monitor is not the original but it's the right model, original was necked unfortunately before I got it.  Picture isn't great and it's very burned, but it works.  New power cable fitted as the old was chewed up totally.  PCB is not working, all I know at the moment is it's not the ROMs, not the RAM, and I can see activity on the ROM address/data lines.  Gives a blank picture.

I've got a spare manual too, back page is missing a piece but the rest is intact.  To get it nice you'll need to sort out the rusted trim under the control panel, fix the PCB, and give it a thorough detailed cleaning.  A damp microfibre cloth is good on the sides, that's how I did the other one.

Looking for £100, collection from Cambridge UK.

So I got the probe connected, and the problem has gone away.  Left it for 20 minutes, nothing.

I checked the +5v and it's only 4.85, the totally dead board is reading dead on 5v in the same cab.  Can a bad voltage regulator cause this?

The board doesn't match the schematics accurately, but there are certain chip arrangements that can be identified.  I've found the LS08/LS10/LS27 associated with VBLANK*, on the Sidam board they're using different parts of the chips in different places, but I now have a list of inputs and outputs to check.  Since I can't run this up on a test bench without unsoldering all the regulators, I'll solder some wires to +5 and GND and do the probe checks hooked up to the cab.

Sorry didn't show much of the game running, the pause is where I've flicked the test switch.

And then .. disaster!  My MS boardset has developed a fault.  Allow it to warm up a bit and corrupt flashy bars appear above and below the picture.  The actual game screen is unchanged and all works, it's like the game is drawing extra memory above and below the actual boundary of the picture.  I'm unfamiliar with Missile Command type hardware, does anyone have any suggestions?  In fact in test mode where only white is used (it says ram/rom are ok), the corruption doesn't really change at all, then scrolls if you roll the trackball, almost like it's drawing the data area for the inputs under the screen.

Did you already create a new entry for this on KLOV? If so, I could publish it right away  ;)

Created an entry as I have some slightly better photos to upload now, just needs someone to approve it.
