Last weekend it was finally a moment that Thwocker and I had a day available to exchange some cabs and do some other work.
First of course, Thwocker bought my beloved Bally-Midway Galaxian. I put so much love into this machine. It was my first true classic and I thought we would never part.....that was until I met her Japanese older sister, yep, that's how weird life's bends can be ;D ;D ;D ;D
Some last minute cleaning, final checks, and a last picture...... :shock: :shock: :shock: ::) ::) :-[ :-[ :-\ :-\ :'( :'( :'( :'(

But that was not all I had to load up...
Of course there was the WG6100 from Marco's Tempest Cabaret that I fixed. It also served (very well) as test monitor for Béla's and Atarimania's WG6100 boards. I think without it I may not even have found the issue with Atarimania's deflection board.
It looked very nice when I was done with it, but it did take some work and time :)
Further I brought some tools and my "standard" parts boxes.

....all set for a long trip !
-
BUT..........I need something to keep me awake !!!
So let's hook up that wonderful iPod and let's listen to my favorite shit-show !

The trip was pretty uneventful.
When I entered the city of Hengelo.....it spotted something.....it looks like they were expecting me.....I have to return on june 7 apparently ;D ;D ;D

André....is that you in the mirror?? Wow, it seems you have been successful ;)

We did a lot of work at Thwocker's.
First of all of course we re-installed the WG6100 in the Tempest cabaret. Of course we did some final tweaking to the monitor and PCB settings to get an as good as possible picture. It looked pretty damn good :)
Next up was reinstalling an AR-II board from Thwocker's upright SW that I had taken to check in my SW cockpit. It worked just fine so Thwocker's SW had another issue.
The thing is when powered up, the marquee and monitor powered up, but the board-set stayed dead. I had checked and there was no +5V. So , since I was in a bit of a hurry last time, I figured it was most likely the AR-II was dead, which it wasn't in the end.
So I tracked back why there was no +5V. I suspected about everything, like the diode bridge on the power brick etc.
We switched both AR-II and Power Brick with the Space Duel but they both just worked in the Space Duel. I was puzzled !!!
Re-installed everything in the SW and .....it worked !!! HUH ?????
So I was falling back to a proven concept in fault-finding: move wires, tap (carefully) on boards and stuff and yes, soon enough I found when I touched something on the power brick the power went down on the PCB set again. But I had checked the fuses and stuff.
And then, while fiddling around I felt that the wire coming from F2 was hot. Really damn hot, I almost burnt my fingers !!!
So I removed the AMP clamp and it was very clear right away: the fuse holder had gone bad. Really bad.
Now, I have never seen this type of fuse holder on an Atari brick. I suspect that it was replaced before.
It has the looks of a (cheap) Chinese fuse block.....
Have a good look at the picture. You can see that the fuse holder has turned dark at the spots where the metal is connected to the plastic. Also, especially on the right, you can see black stuff.....it is slowly burning !
Luckily Marco had a spare fuse holder board (exactly like the original) that we scavenged from another power supply (don't know from what machine that was). I transplanted everything and fired up and bingo, problem solved !
In my years of electronics experience contact problems have been the cause of about 80% of failures, maybe more. This was another one, but it took quite a bit of time to find it.

Thanks for the trip Andre !
Thats looking like some Sparks went between those contacts on the fuseholder :o
by the way, this pic needs to be submitted to the flickerfeed from Arcade outsiders ;) ;D

Yep, already planned on that :)
I just noticed that the fuse holder mention "Littlefuse". That is a very well known brand of fuses. So either it was a bootleg, or maybe, it was just bad luck.
It is yet another fuse/holder problem in the recent months....I am now measuring all fuse holders on the solder side of boards in Ohms settings. Been working on Hi's Amplifone deflection board and again corroded looking holders and fuses. Resistance was 1 Ohm on both. That is too much in a circuit that powers a deflection yoke which has only a couple of ohms resistance.
So I replace them of course.
Anyway, back to Thwocker. We still had to exchange the cab and we unloaded the Galaxian and I loaded up the Euro Joust that I had earned with some earlier work on his games :)
It looks much better than mine, so the plan is to make this a complete Joust, and the other will be converted to Robotron 2084.
It was a great and successful day !

Ssssshhhhhh ;)
You guys are not going to recognize me in September !
So far, I have found only one drawback => It used to be a breeze for me to tilt over and carry cabs around.....not anymore !!! Now the cabs are master over me and I _almost_ dropped the Galaxian at one point because I was not prepared for it ! ;D ;D ;D
-
yeah, it was a great day, and very succesful too: three cabs working again (Tempest, SW and Space Duel) - woho!!
if you have time this summer, please come over and do some work on a couple of monitor issues (DK cap kit, Asteroids tube replacement, new monitor in Burgertime) - you Da Man! :spaceace:
Cheers,
Marco

Haha thanks, sure we'll work that out ;)
Hah, the Space Duel was my masterpiece......
I magically fixed it by just being around ;)

great trip
it looks like Thwocker has a great collection of games in the Far East of Holland

.....let me just say.....I saw them all.....but Marco is very humble about it ;D ;D ;D ;D

Dawn! Your famous Bally-Midway Galaxian 815? :-\ ...I think it's by this one you really jumped in 'the hobby'! (...and even on this board by the way?) :'(
But I understand you...Namco rulez! :P ;) Oh, and at least it's still on very good hands. 8)
-
Yes Bruno, you're right. :)
It was my third machine. Of course the vey first was the Jamma cab with MAME, then I had a UK Double Axle for a while which I kinda regret selling, beautiful machine (nicer artwork than the US version IMHO) and the game was more fun than you'd expect. That was the first machine I fixed however didn't know if I would seriously go into the hobby....it was at the music club for a while (with coin mech at 20 cent, there was some spare change for the club in it every week ;););)) but at a point they wanted it gone and I didn't want it in my living room any longer so I sold it. A couple weeks later I saw the ad on Marktplaats for this Galaxian and.....the rest is history ;);)

I just bought it back from Marco
I'll take good care of it I promise ;D
-
Congrats !!!! You won't be disappointed ! :)

I could use some help on shipping the Galaxian cab to the south of France. I thought it would be easy to find a transporter, but nothing has worked out so far. I tried Dachser, recommended by many, but they refuse to transport the cab for some obscure reason...
Anyone has any suggestions on how to safely (and affordably) get this cab to the new owner? Any help appreciated!
Cheers
Marco

I used Wim Bosman to send a cab to germany ones. You need a kvk nr though

http://www.combinex.eu/
They are a kind of transport agency, I used them once to transport 16 candy cabs from the UK to my house. Went OK.
-
thanks for the suggestions, I'll go check them out!
