Title: :: Return Of The Jedi :: Workshop -> Do or do not! There is no try...
Post by: DarthNuno on October 27, 2008, 09:23:06 PM
Following this road trip

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/jedi/jediSE.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=360.0)

Time is coming to start working on it  :-*

Here's the starting point... just arriving at home... just after the road trip

As you can see, the general condition of this cab is very good  :-*

On this (old) picture, you'll see my cab, on the left. The other one is now in Paris/France, in the hands of an other collector...huge Atari fan  ;) :-*

A part of the deal was to give him all electronic parts from my cabinet... So I'm starting with a 100% empty cab : no boards, no monitor, no power supply  :P

Some on ebay, some from other collectors, and a lot of research of course in order to found some interesting arcade warehouse... there's no secret... but you've to be very active in order to find some rare cabinet  ;)

Bruno, may I ask what your occupation is? :D

I admit it takes most of my free time  ;) Thanks to my wife too  ::) ;) :-* :-* :-*

May the force be with you.  ;D

If you only knew the power of the dark side...  ;) 8)

Ok, like I said previously... this cab is empty. No hardware at all ! So I won't have any problem to choice the emulation way for this game.

Note regarding the emulation : I only do that if the emulation can be arcade accurate (except the vector games  :-\) :

- Using the controls like the original game was supposed to be played (in this case, the yoke)
- Display must be similar than the original one : RGB/15Khz signal and same refresh rate than the original (usually 60hz)

 The goal : once the game switch one, no one can see any difference between the original PCB game and the emulated version.

Let's setup a computer with the game (PIII 900Mhz, ArcadeVGA, XP)

Ok, the game is accurate on my benchmark Commodore monitor  :) Let's prepare the usual VGA to SCART adapter

I'll use that second hand Philips TV (50€) as a true RGB monitor :

Hopefully, I still have the original monitor frame :

So let's fix all the components of the TV...

...into the frame. Done

As I said... it's empty...

...but not for long

Let's keep the minimum parts of the computer :

Cool, it fits now  ;)

Let's switch on the TV and the computer now :

It looks great :-*

I cannot play the game yet. So the next step will be to do a 'flight yoke' hack  8)

regarding the lack of vector emulation, have you tried the AAE vector emulator yet, i saw you posted about it on BYOAC. people are praising it highly.

Back on this  ;)

Easy stuff : a new neon

Let's work on the flight yoke controller now. As you can see, a sticker is missing on it. I have to found a reproduction  :?

More important, I've to hack the yoke in order to use it with Mame. Very easy in fact  ;) Like I already did for the Star Wars cockpit, I'll do the SideWinder Dual Strike hack.

Let's go

I'll use the board of that USB SW DS joystick ...

...now hooked to the original SW Flight Yoke

A quick test  :P

It works fine, let's finish the 'thing' properly  :P

Electrical tape works wonders doesn't it?

Can you hear the hard drive when it's on? Or the cooling fans?

When you turn it on does it go strait to Return of the Jedi or do you have to load it yourself?

Yes, I can hear the HDD when it loads the game, but once loaded, no more sound (because no more access to the hard drive)  ;)
For the moment, I've just put Mame32 in the Startup directory. All I have to do is to press a key in order to start ROTJ from the menu.

But the setup is not finished yet 8)

...and back on this!

Still no news regarding the Return Of The Jedi 'Yoke Overlay' repro so far  :-\

I know Atarimania is in the same situation than me... looking for a yoke overlay (Oh, of course he IS the owner of the second ROTJ cab in the road trip  ::))!
He finally found a NOS one, and of course, he's ready to help me and of course ...the arcade community, because that overlay is not available elsewhere so far!
So let do the job ourself!  8)

He doesn't have an A3 scanner, so here's the two files he sent to me

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/jedi/rotj_yoke1_small.jpg) (http://www.arcadelifestyle.net/jedi/rotj_yoke1.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/jedi/rotj_yoke2_small.jpg) (http://www.arcadelifestyle.net/jedi/rotj_yoke2.jpg)
Click on picture to d/l the high resolution version

I've used the auto merging tool in Photoshop, and here's the result

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/jedi/rotj_yoke0_small.jpg) (http://www.arcadelifestyle.net/jedi/rotj_yoke0.jpg)
Click on picture to d/l the high resolution version

We even don't need to vector it I would say  ::)

...but ... if you notice, the second part (the down part) of the yoke overlay has not been scanned correctly, I mean it was not perfectly aligned while scanning.

Two options :

- Atarimania (Franck), can you rescan the second part, with a better alignment?
- Maybe some 'photoshop guys' can slightly rotate the second file & reassemble it perfectly?

Franck, can you also provide us the exact size of the overlay?

Anyway, let's the European guys -US- provide to the community the famous & long awaited Return Of The Jedi yoke overlay  ;)

Hummmmm....too late...  put it on the cab  ;D ;D ;D ;D

No... seriously I'll go this week to my office and there I'll able to scan it with an A3 scanner

This doesn't actually have any SW reference on it, and in general these pieces of artwork are "left alone" as Lucasfilm doesn't regard it as their property...

As soon as there are any SW characters involved, it could be a different story though...
