Title: Logan's Gameroom
Post by: logan on October 15, 2008, 08:41:31 PM
Howdy guys,

the day has finally come, today I started with the preperations for my gameroom (does Logan's Lair sound good...   ;)).

So this is the Room that will be turned into my personal Lair:

As you can see on the pictures, there is this big white tube going right thru and across the room, this will be my first task. The room isn't very high (only about 2 meters) and that is why this tube is hanging very deep, unfortunatelly I can't just remove the tube because it is from the heating system of my house, but what I can do is to relocate the tube. This will happen tomorrow and the day after tomorrow by some craftsmen who know what the are doing... :)

Today I prepared the room for them and demounted some stuff that would be in the way of the new tube (the new one wont cross the room and wont hang down as deep as this one).

Here is the room now:

I know, not as impressive as Nuno's, but it's mine!   ::)

More to come soon...

Thanks Darth!  :D
The craftsmen didnt mention the outrun, the snk29 or the pinball...  :-\

Well, the next step will be new wiring and plaster boards on the inner walls (allso i have to make a cover for the tubes allso out of plaster boards)... But first i have to wait until my car comes back from the garage, until then I cant pick up plaster boards and "square-shaped timber".

oooookay...

I really did continue on Saturday... but no pictures...  Because I only took the measures... I need more then 175 meters (!!!) of "square-shaped timber". 9m x 4m wood for the ceiling and alot of plasterboards...

After taking measures I went to the local timber mill but he cant deliver the timber untill the 9th of January  :( So I will try to get it somewhere else...)

But I'm really happy I finally got all data I need to get started!

Yes, the two coming weeks are the worst for delivery ... but ... hey, it's Christmas time  ;) :-*

Today I bought the wood for the "underconstruction" of my walls and the ceiling. Because the local lumbermill won't be back open before the 12th on Jan and I didn't want to waint any longer, I went to a "building center" called "Praktiker" (Hornbach was closed today...).

Here it is, 200 Meters of square-shaped-timer:

Now I can finally continue building...
But, as I look at my pinball, I see a problem coming... as you can see on the picture below, there is not much space between the top of the pinball and the ceiling, but when I put a wooden ceiling up there I'm afraid there wont be enough space left... hm... got to think of something...

... there is not much space between the top of the pinball and the ceiling, but when I put a wooden ceiling up there I'm afraid there wont be enough space left... hm... got to think of something...

Regarding the previous pictures, the ceiling looks fine... why not only painting it by the way ?

Regarding the previous pictures, the ceiling looks fine... why not only painting it by the way ?

Good point  ;), at first I planned only painting it, but as the idea of building a gameroom grew in my mind I wanted everything to be perfect! :)

Here is why I decided to make a new ceiling:
1. I need room for all my wirering and the new lights
2. There are some holes in the ceiling from the mountings of the original "heating tubes"
3. The ceiling somewhen was painted and now on some spots this paint starts to fall off. This means I would have to scratch of all old paint before I could repaint it...

But mostly because of the wireing... so I can hide all the wires, that's also why I use plasterboards on the inner walls, only because its an easy way to hide all wires and setting up new switches an stuff :)  ::) ::)

How about running your wires in pipe conduit?  You can paint the conduit to match... ??

I have conduit running everywhere in my gameroom, It's not even painted, but it's hidden amongst all the posters.

I think scraping some paint will be way easier than trying to do a plaster or suspended ceiling, especially for your pinball machines!

Post by: logan on January 04, 2009, 02:22:05 PM
Well, you know, My wife allows me to build this gameroom in our house, BUT (with women there is always a BUT...) only if everything looks clean and the room can also be used as a guestroom in emergency (I got some plans how to prewent this possibility...  ::) ::)).

But, it really is a lot easier for me to just put a new ceiling under the old one then scratch of the paint, fill all the holes, dents and scratches, hope the old finery (is that the right word?) they used in the 70s wont fall off and finally paint it :)

All I have to do with the new ceiling is screw the timer up there, and then nail the ceiling panels into place...

The only thing I really worry about is the room height. This house was built somewhene between 1965 and 1975, everythins has been modernised over the time, but back in the days they didn't plan to use basement as a place to stay... only to store stuff... so, the rooms down here only have a hight of about 2.10 Meters. Fine with me, I'm only 1.82 big, but, as you can see on the pinball it could be not high enough...

So I really have to think of something... I think i could get the pinball down another 2 or 3 CMs by trunign those screws out you normally use to adjust the proper hight...

my wife dosn't allow me to build a gameroom in the garden... (not yet)... so this will have to do...  :-\

Here you go, new pictures:

After our first tries with the nailing gun:

Ceiling ready:

Unfortunatelly the nailinggun is almost to powerful for my wood, it sometimes just goes thru it... :P So is used some special Screw-Nail Thingys from HILTI to do the long wall...

This is how far we got today:

Tomorrow I will go and buy all the wires I need and will continue with that... after that the plasterboards come on the timber on the walls!

That's going to look great!  That isn't too much space sacrificed....  Now you will have a place to conceal all the wire!

Great Idea!  :D

Thx Sonic! But yours is way better!

Okay, I wired the "fuse box" and also bought all the wires and switches and power sockets!

Today I also picked up the ceiling and the plasterboards!

I think I've got everything together now...  ::)

As soon as I'm finished I have to look for a Donkey Kong Jr. or a Pac-Man... love those two cabs...
btw, I just bough two SEGA Astro Cabs, maybe I will go and pick them up Saturdaymoring... (only about 100km from here)

If your tacks are going through stuff, reduce the pressure on your compressor. There should be a regulating knob with separate pressure gauge. At first my tacks were going through the plasterboards (or drywall as the yanks call them).

No offence but is there a system in your placement of the carrying wood ? You need to support the boards every 30 cm and that looks a lot wider ?

The nailgun doesn't work with a compressor, it's more like a regular gun, you put the nail in and the "charge" in the back and fire   We already used the lightest charges, that's why I switched to screws after I made the ceiling.

Yes, there is a "system", 50cm between them. These walls have alot of roughness, that's why i had to leave more space between some of the laths...  :o

Should not be a problem... once the games will be there, the walls won't be accessible ... so no risk to damage them  :D
Title: Re: Logan's Gameroom
Post by: logan on January 13, 2009, 06:16:04 PM
well, Level42 made me think... ;)

I decided to put a second layer of laths on the first one, so it gains more stability, the plasterboards can be easier deployed because of the smaller space between and I can (hopefully) fully clear the roughness of the wall and it will become a plane new wall.
I wanted to do that on the outerwall (to keep space for the air so now steam and mold can build up) but now I think I will also do it on the 2 inner walls...

Here's a pic, what do you think? unnecessary?
I only bolted it on with 1 screw (per lath) to try it out, no problem to get the second layer down again.

I think it's better this way...
Title: Re: Logan's Gameroom
Post by: level42 on January 15, 2009, 12:53:12 AM
Yes it's better.

I've learned how to do the plasterboards from my brother-in-law who has been a carpenter for almost 35 years now. The boards are ALMOST  (!!!!!!) 60cm. wide and you need to support them on each side and in the middle.

Be sure to place the laths exactly right.(Tip, use a small piece of plasterboard that has the full width to check)
In my gameroom I had the problem that sometimes the laths of the wood-construction of the walls was not exactly placed right (not a problem for the construction, but for the plasterboards it was).

Looking at Bruno's pictures: he put the laths vertically, but installed the plaster boards horizontally. That already gives a more support. Traditionally plasterboards are installed vertically here, but it really doesn't matter of course, you can go both ways.
Title: Re: Logan's Gameroom
Post by: logan on January 15, 2009, 12:31:51 PM
Thanks for the advise!  :)

I installed the plasterboards (not many yet...) horizontally because the second layer of laths is vertically, works out pretty good.
My Plasterboards are 260cm long and about 62cm wide.

I will post some pics tomorrow or saturday wehn I'm back home!

Looking good, looking good ! May I ask why you use the green one's sometimes and sometimes the regular one's ? I'm was a no-no before, but I believe the green one's are for moist rooms like bathrooms ? (and more expensive because of that). Really fun to see the progress, keep up the good work, you will be rewarded :D

Thx L42! :)  You're right, the green ones are for bathrooms or kitchens and so on... I used them on only one wall, why? because this is an outer wall, meaning behind the wall there is only soil & rocks (mostly solid rock). All the other walls are inner walls, there are more rooms behind them. I just tought it would be better to use the green ones on the outer wall. Yeah, they really do cost more... I think one costs 4€ more than the whites (but the whites are only 12mm, the greens are 24mm).

Hopefully I will be done soon and get my reward...  ;D ;D ;D (couldn't even test my 2 new Astros yet because I have no space... :( )

Hi guys,

I'm sorry I didn't make a new update yet but there is nothing to see... I had a rough week at work and not much time... only sanded the wall and primerd it yesterday. Today i will paint it and see if that will be enough to cover the plasterboards or if I need to wallpaper it (dont wont to do that...).
I will make some pics after painting it this evening (it will become red! ;D).

I didn't have time to get new plasterboards and laths yet, so I couldn't continue on the other 2 walls or the ceiling...  :-\

Yes, let's see how it looks, but I can assure you applying glass fiber (like I did for my two rooms) is very quick, cheap & easy  ;)

Red? Nice...Tt'll be the Logan's DK Game Room  ;D

Hi Darth,

I wanted to have a smooth wall, not textured... but i think it wont work out the way I planned...

HereÄs the wall after sanding and primer:

and here after the first coat of colour:

As you can see it doesn't cover up the white caps between the boards... I will go for a second layer tomorrow... maybe it will turn out red after all...  ;)

Red is a hard color to paint, I painted a wall red a few years ago and I needed a primer + 3 coats of red paint to hide the seams. :ghost:
Title: Re: Logan's Gameroom
Post by: DarthNuno on February 05, 2009, 07:14:41 PM
Yes, like petieken said, it's a 'difficult' color, but don't be afraid at this step... you've only paint the first layer : primer  ;)

Let's see how it'll look after the third layer.

Courage my friend  :spaceace:

Tell me about it ! Red=hell ! I did two layers, and was planning on a third, but I gave up.... I tried it with the current lighting, and it's not going to show all that bad, and most of the walls will be covered by machines anyway, and on the rest there will be neons and decoration.... :)

I think if I will ever need to do a red wall again, I would start with some gray layers or something like that.

Blue however covers like nuts. Two layers and perfect finish :)

I hope to get done till the end of feb... but I have two more walls to complete (fitting in the last plasterboards -> painting) and the ceiling also must be completed... als well as the (uuh... *shiver*) tubehousing (I hate that part)

Awesome  :) ...when you already compare with the first pictures, what a difference isn't it ?  :-*

now its sanding time again...  :? :?

Good job Logan  :-*

now its sanding time again...  :? :?

Don't do like me... I mean sanding manually  :-\ Or you'll spend a too much time  :-\
Go first with a sanding machine like this

...then finish the fight job manually, like this

Go Go Go  :-* :-* :-*

Hi Bruno,

thx for the tip. I use this tool:

it works really good ans is very fast, but it creates so much dust / powder and THAT's the part I really dislike...  :-\
But, only 2 walls to go, and then NO MORE sanding because NO MORE plasterwalls in my gameroom!  ;D ;D

Yes...why I didn't use it too by the way?

I've just found an old picture of me during the V1 ... I was sanding manually

...no dust mask as you can see... I cannot imagine what's inside my lung after that

And when the job was done... the entire room looked like being on the Hoth planet  ;D

No, I wont do amy changes to the floor, the room isn't high enough for that... I will just throw in a large carpet, I think...

Yes, I think you'd definatley  prefer carpet over tile... Vaccuming is much easier than mopping!

Plus, you can choose an awesome color or blacklight reflective option!!  :D

RED (& WHITE)

strangely, this time the red covers much better... only did it 2 times (when i was finished i started at the other end again)
Same with the white, but somehow the white wall seems to need a third layer tomorrow...

I take it the small one is for a T.V. ?   Nice designs.  :D

Yeah, it's a "TV-Rack" :)
As I said before, this room will also be for my Computer & my consoles... I really don't have that many cabs (1 SNK Candy 29, 2 SEGA Astro City, 1 SEGA Outrun & 1 William's Pinball)... so there is some room left for a desk and a couch! :) (and maybe some more cabs in the future!)

//EDIT: I think i should call it a gaming lounge...  ::)

no paint, I will make it out of the same material as the ceiling :)

And I just completet another part... I was really scared because it looked like if i make the housing around the tubes I wont be able to open my window anymore...

but some construction and work later it looks like this:
