As i dont have space for a cab (yet) and i just sold my vectrex for a decent amount, i have bought parts to make a custom CPO, its going to have 2 sticks for robotron, the correct button layout for defender and FIVE extra buttons....can you guess what the five extra will be for?
-
first two steps done, cut to size and mark the wood....
-
No P2 Button?
-
So you just want to play Robotron, Defender and the mystery-game with it?
Consider to use the three buttons on the right for the latter, too...T&F/HO/HS is more fun when you have an opponent ;)
-
no player 2 button ATM......
-
May as well stick in an extra button for Invisio (Stargate) - Seeing as you alread have the classic Defender layout.
-
might sound odd but i dont really like stargate, besides, the buttons at the bottom will be used for hyperspace so maybe inviso too...who knows!
-
OOPS! six buttons i bought wont fit my timber - too short and once you add the leaf switch - no connection!
-
take leaf switch off holder and attach to wood...FIXED phew!
-
Heres the parts, all arrived and waiting patiently:
-
Could nt you use something like that?

I could but i dont want to...
-
I can understand. I don t like so much that graphics but buttons and joys position on my opinion is well done
-
Decided to test fit the sticks, glad i did - the reverse button (next to stick 1) needs to move a few mm!
-
today i finally received my 28mm drill spade, so tomorrow ALL the holes will be cut :) should hopefully have a completely wired CP by sunday - purchasing a CPO for it tomorrow - any tips on best way to fit a CPO???
-
FINISHED!

for my first attempt im very happy with it :D
-
You're kidding, right ?
Apart from the looks, which I won't comment on, why didn't you use crimp connectors to connect the wires to the components ? Or at the very least solder them ?
-
you should have used the overlay...

because i didnt need to, as this is a PROTOTYPE build - as its my first ever foray into any kind of arcade control panel - it works and thats what matters to me!
-

I intend to on V2, i used this stuff as it was spare and covers the *mistakes*

I am happy that you are happy, that is the main thing ofcourse.
What it reminds me of, is this quote from only click me if you're sure you can handle it 8) (http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/3.html)
Nothing says class, or "I'm a loser cop-out on cabinet art" like fucking marble shelf paper. It's so regal. I feel like I'm gazing upon an italian palace.
But thats just me ofcourse, if you're Happy with it, thats all that counts
-
To be honest...this is by far the strangest controlpanel layout that I've ever seen. Looks like it was build for a specific game with a very complicated control system :D But as long as it suits your needs...go on :)
I wouldn't have drilled the holes for the joysticks all through the wood. Just screw them to the wood from underneath, so you wouldn't have those screw heads on top.

I think that is the least of the problems here ;D

You never mentioned it was a prototype so how could I know ?
One question, why is the left joystick positioned lower than the right one ?

hehe thats one of the....mistakes! i think my biggest mistake was the kind of wood i used, when i hit knots in the wood it kinda ripped parts off it - MDF next time-and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO marble effect - oh and all buttons will be leaf switched concave buttons :D.
For my first ever wiring attempt to i was surprised to only have 2 buttons not work, but didnt take long to fix!
-
Working on these kinds of projects is always a learning experience! Hope you're having fun with it!
-
i have indeed, and its perfectly laid out for playing defender (i still suck at the game tho lol) - looking forward to making a V2!
-
I like your enthousiasm! Looking forward to see pics of v2, which I am sure will be a big improvement over this prototype. :)
-
will be getting the layout printed first, then using the layout as my template instead of my poor measurements - and the layout will of course be the williams multigame CPO!

Sucking at Defender is nothing to be ashamed off......first time I ever played it on the real machine I was only thinking why the hell didn't they simply use a four- way joystick to move around ?
Making a test lay out is a good idea because only the real thing can make you "feel" any improvements you can make....
-
haha....there was a Defender in a 'snack bar' in Neustadt (Dirk/Capt.Kirk will remember). I always did and will ever suck in this game....1 credit means 10-20 seconds of gameplay for me :D ;D
-
The overlay is a good idea, try using one button style and not to many collors. Don't center buttons it looks strange.
-
i just found the old "my grail" thread by sub... hihi... what an interesting guy... :)

i thought you would. :D
-
bought some MDF off cuts from a diy store today, got enough for making CP2 - gonna take my time this time tho!!!! :D
-
I wanted to add that you shouldn't use hot glue for mounting your panel...use screws instead ;D ;)
-
and use a measuring tape to line up the joysticks etc.

i found that out when i came home from work on tuesday...it had fallen apart  all screwed together now, also ordered more leaf buttons to replace those horrible red buttons - not only are they ugly but they are very unresponsive!
Also - cant wait to get started on CP2 but want to receive the overlay first!
-
removed the horrible red microswitch buttons that were convex? (get confused between the two) and replaced them with gold leaf concave? (get confused) buttons :)
CPO ordered for V2, and crimp connectors too :D
-
complete set of gold leaf buttons ordered. so no microswitches - custom CPO ordered. build of V2 to start mid-end september
-
