Post by: DarthNuno on June 04, 2008, 06:04:57 PM
Yeps, I'll be in less than two weeks in USA for holidays : Los Angeles & Las Vegas  (no, it's not for a roadtrip  ;))

Maybe some of you knows good place over there ? good Arcades with old games ? good shops or any good locations not to miss ?

 :-* :-* :-*

Here's some more info/suggestions:

If you go to Las Vegas.. You're only a few hours from AREA 51 !!!!    If you decide to go and check it out, you must be very careful, that is, if you don't know much on Area 51 lore,  you could get shot, let alone die in the desert.. here's a few pix of what you could see:

Thanks for the pictures Barry  :-* :-* :-*

I've already been in LA (one time) and VEGAS (two times) few years ago... but I wasn't so 'ArcadeLifeStyle' crazy than nowadays (  ), and I didn't pay attention too much the arcades ( ...at the time   )

In LA, I remember Chinese theater, stars avenue, Universal Studios (and the famous place from Back to The Future), Beverly Hill... usual tourist stuff, but now... I want the big stuff : Arcade Vintage, old pinballs, beers & Rickey's sauce, talking with Billy Mitchell   :D :D :D  :pac:  :ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

I remember the Hoover ham too ... Superman stuff ... Really impressive... I've the 'Death Valley' trip... but you've done the best : AREA 51 and aliens stuff  :P It looks very great... but it's in Arizona isn't it ?

Thanks Elpancho... PinballMuseum seems to be the place not to miss in Vegas... I'll take a TON of pictures of course  :-* :-* :-*

...and after the trip  8)

Don't get me wrong... There must be a lot of Arcades over there I didn't see of couse ! But let me show you the ones that most of tourists (like me) can easily find because these Arcade rooms are located in high tourist spots.

My wish would be to find out as much 'classics' as possible... Possible in 2008 ? Let's see... (part 1)

OK, the first encounter was somewhere in Hollywood Boulevard ...

...almost on the street, in front of a small shop

Nothing to say about the pinball, but the midway cab .. hmm... Ms PacMan sides, Galaga Bezel, running which front end ? No idea.

More interesting, this Arcade located at Santa Monica, on the pier :

Yesss... some classics games  :-*

...still good to see them, up & running ... even if they have been modified with modern pieces... but the most important thing is : THESE GAMES ARE PLAYABLE  :-*

Old and new pinballs :

Ouch... who wants to restore this Pac Man from this point ? I would like to, believe me  :spaceace:  :ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

I'm very happy to touch...and play a classic game in a public arcade room in 2008  8) :-*

Various things :

This modern game 'Blazing Angels' is really cool... It has the basis of an After Burner ...very fun to play  :P

In a corner... three Midway cabs in line  :o Why it is so easy to found them in USA, and very hard in Europe  ??? :?

Have a look at my hand... I really want to bring them back in Belgium with me   :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

A lot of work to do on it, but nothing impossible  ::)

Ok, let's move to an other place : Universal Studios Hollywood

The park is great (the brand new Simpsons ride is incredible), but nothing special regarding the Arcade room  :? Only a very small one located close to the Jurassic Park Ride :

...no classics here  :ghost:

I dunno if it's your kind of music, but ... impossible to miss this one because you're so fan about 'Area 51' stuff -> MEGADETH 'Hangar 18'  :-*

The lyrics :

Welcome to our fortress tall
Take some time to show you around
Impossible to break these walls
For you see the steel is much too strong
Computer banks to rule the world
Instruments to sight the stars

Possibly Ive seen to much
Hangar 18 I know too much

Foreign life forms inventory
Suspended state of cryogenics
Selective amnesias the story
Believed foretold but whod suspect
The military intelligence
Two words combined that cant make sense

Possibly Ive seen to much
Hangar 18 I know too much

OK, there is an Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland, and in the shop, at the exit of the ride, you can see a custom Indiana Jones Pinball  8)

No artwork but wood all around... it looks nice  :-*

Hey, Thanks for the link on the Hangar 18 video.. You're right, not my type of tunes, but was still cool to see!!  ;D

More great pictures!!   I'm sorry you didn't see more classic games, but I think it's like a miracle to see any, when you do!!   ;)

When we were in Las Vegas back in '99, We stayed at the Luxor.. They had a large game room, but you know what was the only game that caught my attention, as well as a handfull of quarters??... A Cocktail ASTEROIDS!!!!!  I just wanted to walk out with it!!!!!!!!

We have a Jillians here in the Houston Area, but I don't like them due to the fact that they allow SMOKING in there!  (because they serve alchol & has a bar setting along with all the games)

I liked that VR Racer looking game, Never seen/played it.. but it sure looks like a TRON LightCycle to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D

I would like to raid that store with all the goodies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Saw some stuff I'd like to have!!

I know that they didn't have any DL or SA... But that classics section says it all! The most memorable games are there!

I think I remember them being there as of 1999.  (our first trip to Gameworks).

Definately a trip to remember!  Hope you had a great time!!!   ;D   :pac:  :ghost:   :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

I wish I knew you were going to be in Vegas, otherwise I could take you around some distributor warehouses.  Last time I was at one, they had a working Space Ace.

Did you get to the Pinball Hall Of Fame?

His pinball pictures are way better than mine.  ;D

That is actually an original Nintendo conversion. Zenomorp (on KLOV) just fixed his and even has the kit manual for Ms./Pac-Man. You can see his project here (http://forums.webmagic.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=921407&page=0&fpart=all&vc=1)

Ah, good thing you got to see Westwood's arcade while it was still alive. Here's what it looked like as of a few weeks ago:

It's very sad, considering I used to go there all the time! (they used to have Motor Raid too, which is my favorite Model 2 game besides Daytona...)

Unfortunately, yes...The same one. I used to go there daily!

UCLA used to have an amazing arcade (actually two arcades), but it was shut down and turned into a Jamba Juice, even before Westwood Arcade closed its doors. Then, more recently, UCLA re-opened a smaller arcade with less than 20 cabinets. Better than nothing, I suppose...

I can post pictures of the new one later, but to see if I have photos of the old one, will require digging in the archives...
Title: Re: ArcadeLifeStyle in Los Angeles & Las Vegas ?
Post by: Slonie on January 21, 2009, 01:46:28 AM
Okay, here's the photos of the current UCLA arcade...Just a shadow of its former self. However, it has several new games (like Street Fighter IV).

http://www.flickr.com/photos/slonie/sets/72157612759002961/

I think I caught every game in there in this photoset, there's nothing else. I still have memories of the old one, with 60" projector cabinets for the new fighting games, big heavy cabinets like Desert Tank, linked Daytona and Daytona 2, WAR: Final Assault (4-player), Super GT, Time Crisis 2 twin, and rows of standard cabinets with games like Zero Gunner, Shock Troopers,  and The Outfoxies...

Well, regarding the current pictures... even with new games such 'Street Fighter', this place doesn't give me the desire to play overthere ...

... I mean, the environment looks so 'cold' ... without life... it looks like an operating room  :-\ No neon, no posters, ... sad

Can't disagree with you there....The old arcade had plenty of posters. I really wish I was around when they were packing up so I could get the Raiden Fighters 2 poster on foam core...I always had my eye on that one. But don't go too hard on the new arcade, after all, it's new.

As a consolation, I'll make a gallery of all my arcade pictures from Japan...

Yes, you're right () . Let's give the operator more time for the decorations. It's still nice to see arcade in 2009 . Congratulation & courage to the operator, because it's not an easy task to keep an arcade room alive ... in 2009   :)

Let's wish them good luck  :)

Arg...How can I miss that place  We were very 'lazy' for this
I remember ...we were in Vegas... in the morning, and we asked to a policeman where that pinballs Museum is located... he said : it's not on the strip, you've to get a cab' ... but it's only open after noon or evening... and after a long walk into the strip during all the afternoon/evening... we were so tired...  ....
...and we missed the opportunity to visit the Museum.. Shame on me

Vib, only pinballs over there ? No arcade games ?

And among all the beautiful things to see in Las Vegas & around, let's try to see what is being done on the 'mainstream arcade level',  16 years after this first topic!  8)

Not for far from the strip, a place called Area 15 :

Some classics, here and there inside the building...

...but also a 'true' arcade bar on two levels (upstair for adults, downstair for everyone) :

On the strip, there is a 'Stranger Things' exhibition (close to the M&Ms store), with several rooms, and one of them is a mini arcade game room :

At the entrance of the MGM casino, a small game room with 20 games... but no real classic :

Inside the Circus Circus, in the middle of the park you can find a couple of games...

An other game room at the Hard Rock casino/hotel... no classic or so, like most of places here now ...

OK, this is by far the most interresting place to go for people like us ... the Las Vegas Pinball Hall of Fame Pinball Museum  :-*

A couple of old friends (games I owned)  8) :

What the hell? I cannot be something else than a generic cabinet equipped with the official Ultracade kit released during the 20th DL anniversary era...
