As many knows I brought a Juno First back from our Archer's roadtrip (Erik's (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3214.0) ,Bruno's (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3215.0)).
This epic trip is also know as the tight roadtrip because of the limited space I had to put my leg's in Bruno's car after we loaded his Wacko.
To be honest Gyruss spotted it first but after a few belgian beers, I could convince him that this game was complete crap and that the joystick was built with a dengerous toxic material so he let me have it.
Also note that Bruno almost bought it too, in that case that would have been a Bruno First.
Ahem..
Anyway, here's how it was when I bought it.
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/1.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/2.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/3.jpg)
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/5.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/6.jpg)
Everything was there except the coin door (more on that soon), the CPO and the power supply board...
-
Last year (yes, last year! time flies), after some researches on the net, I found Mikonos' website (http://www.zonaarcade.com/ (http://www.zonaarcade.com/)) and asked him if he could print a CPO and a bezel for me.
Provided him some measurements… (the pics I sent him were bigger and more easily readable of course)...
...and the prints arrived in no time in my mailbox…
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/11.jpg)
Some creases due to rolling for transportation but I think I can flatten these.
OK, deep breath, this is my first CPO applying (dry method, hell yeah):
I learned from the masters on this forum so I'm holding the CPO in place with some clamps:
...and start peeling it from the middle:
...then flattening half of it with a rubber tool:
Same process on the other side.
... I wish I had more material on the bottom side and less on the top...
this will be hidden unless you look at the cab from the ground point of view, so it's not a big deal.
(Blurry) drumroll:
It worked perfectly, yayyyy!
See, I learned something from reading all the DLF posts so late at night. ;D
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/19.jpg)
Note that the material is not arcade perfect, it's not silkscreened and it has a matt lamination for protection instead of the usual textured one but that will do just fine for now 'cause we want to play that baby at Eurocade 2012 don't we?
-
Now let's populate that poor empty thing.
Mmmh but wait, something is weird with that Coin Control joystick don't you think?
I could twist the ball on top for half a centimeter or something so I did that for a good half an hour back and forth and that centimeter became 1,5 centimeter and so on and finally and I was able to remove the damn thing (and my hands were ruined of course) .
That little ball of glue was the culprit for the "high neck" we saw on the picture above.
Some very strong glue and some pressure and the ball was back at its normal place!
While working I noticed that top ball was a bit cracked (probably the reason why it had been glued in the first place) but it should hold on, just promise to be gentle with it when you'll see it. ;)
OK, that slowed me down a lot for tonight so I'll start populating the CP later, yes things move reaaaaally sloooowly here 8)

About that missing power supply board...
Reading Bruno's Wacko restauration topic (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3215.msg44834#msg44834), I found out that arcadeshop.com might have something to help me.
Except for the mechanical games counter, all I needed were "usual" voltages such as (+5, -5, +12,...) so, yes, I could have done this thing myself by soldering (what??) and using a "modern switcher".
But that device from Steven was such an elegant and easy solution...plus I felt like this special game deserved a clean installation inside, and believe me, my solders are rarely clean :-\
So I ordered this silver beauty:
Having no real clue if the game was working or not, I was really anxious to try it...
Especially after the game had been stored in the shed for so long during that cold latest winter.
Suspense, tension, sweat...
I need a refreshment NOW!
OK, thanks young lady, time to plug everything now, please go.
Like always, my favourite arcade genius KID was there to help and prevent me from breaking anything... THANKS BUDDY :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
The whole temporary set up took half our hallway ;D
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/26.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/27.jpg)
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/28.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/29.jpg)
Aaaaaaaand,...
...aaaaaaaand....
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/30.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/31.jpg)
HAHAAAAAAAAA!!!!
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
Sound is working too btw, if you have a moment, listen to it it now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWB-GiSElV4) because it "makes" half the beauty of the game imho.
-
Great Chris !
Looks like i need to have a go on it at Eurocade !
-
Great job Chris! (Love the cab shape!) :spaceace: :spaceace:
Hope to see it at EuroCade!!!!
-
Yess!!!! It's alive, well done!
A fantastic game to play! :)
-
great job so far, chris, the first resto is always something special! keep up the good work, looking forward to playing this b**** at eurocade!
btw, totally loved your "bruno first" wordplay
-
Great effort Chris, and your announcement to bring it with you to Eurocade made may heart beat faster. :D
I´m pressty sure that this game will get a looooooooooot of playtime.
-
No no no Juno First is totally boring, definitly not worth your time at Eurocade, there are plenty of other games to play !!!! (Maybe this way I get a chance on it too :):):)).
;D ;D ;D
Brilliant Chris & KID, this is one SUPERB addition for Eurocade 2012 and a gem in your collection !!!
-
Gameplay reminds me of Radarscope..
-
Yup. But then 10 times better.
-
It's more like Defender to me, but with a different point of view. Even the sounds are almost the same!
I'm still on the ChrisChris list, when he get bored of that one ::) :P ;D
-
Wooowww Juno First ... Cool game :-* and nice resto Chris :spaceace:
-
Thanks for the comments :-*
As my technical knowledges are limited, I won't be able to set the machine on free play @ Eurocade.
It's set to 1€/game so bring some coins and sorry for the inconvenience. ::)
OK, time for some spring cleaning now.
Yes it's that time of the year.
before:
…and halfway… did you guys notice I cleaned the "juno" first? (drum roll please).
the money shot:
(a fistfull of quarters from 1976 to 1986 were lying at the bottom of the cab.)
as well as the original monitor instructions:

Stripping and cleaning:
Side note, probably from Archer, the white screen part was worrying me a bit before I had the opportunity to plug the cab.
Vacuuming the inside… mmmh, looking back at the pic, I think I could do better.
The flash from a camera shows no mercy…

Screwing the PSU board in correct position:

Cleaning the (double) glasses and marquee:
Time to cut and place Mikonos' repro bezel
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/juno_first/41.jpg)
(what do you think of my red tool?)
Not the exact same blue but I didn't send him any sample so that will do.
Otherwise the repro is nice, thanks buddy!
The new guy in the house is making me a bit nervous running like crazy, playing with the bolts and screws and climbing/banging his head on the freshly cleaned glasses...
While I am at it I gave the marquee black rail and screws a fresh coat of black paint.
Soon: populating the CP, reassembling everything and at last PLAYING!
-
Thanks for the report :).
(what do you think of my red tool?)
What's it for? Is it a toy? It's made of way to much plastic.
-
Great chris !
Its comming together nicely !
The bezel compare shot looks like the purple is blue ???
Is the rest matching that or was it just so much faded into purple ?
-
About the free-play: if there isn't a dip-switch setting for it we still have some of those excellent button brackets that Luigi made last year that can be installed on your coin door (temporarily) in seconds.
About the cat: Excellent to pick it up and dust of bezels etc. ;)
After vacuuming cabs I always take some paper towel, spray a bit of cleaning stuff (like glasses) on the towel and then wipe the entire bottom and sides. Makes it smell a bit fresher too ;)
-
@ Gerry: yes, it's one of my kid's toys ;)
@ Etienne: it's a bit different you'll see when I reassemble the whole thing.
Mikonos suggested a "full restoration" in order to make all the blue perfectly matching, but... you know me and my "soul of the cab" thing: I could'nt resolve to remove the original stickers that were already there,
because to me, even if a bit damaged, they are 10.000 times more valuable than any repro.
@ André: Good idea! I'd like to clean the back of the monitor better too but I had no tool around to discharge it at that moment, I will do that next week.
... and I was kidding about the free play part, of course :)

Sorry for the off topic, could you give me a link to see this "button brackets"? Thanks!
-
Hey, this is Europe... ;D
-
OK, high time to populate that lonely CP:
Using the picture from the manual to make an almost perfect reproduction:
...and now that once full of arcade parts candy box makes a perfect douchebag jar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIrFhZe_dD4) for the house (not that I need one):
putting everything back together (and play a little of course ;D):
Note that the dots from the CPO are not super aligned with the bottom part of it but, hey it's just a repro (maybe one day I'll find an original one):
Nightshot of that cool marquee for your viewing pleasure:
Next in line:
-repaint all the black areas in...well, black.
-find a coindoor and rebuild it inside the cab
(there's one for sale atm at Quarterarcade (http://www.quarterarcade.com/Game.aspx/7905) but Super SuperUlly might have one for me... fingers crossed! thanks, buddy!! :spaceace:).
-
Very nice cab ;)
-
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Great job Chris!
Do i see it good ? has this cabinet taken the place of the monster in your hallway ?
dont tell me you got rid of the monster right ??
-
Nope, just moved it aside for the picture.
The monster is convenient and cute so it's definitely a keeper :pac: :pac: :pac:

Chris this is the right coin door:
(http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/2889/junocoindoor.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/843/junocoindoor.jpg/)
(with Gottlieb insert) - very difficult to find (I need one for my Q*bert)
-
Thanks scr33n!
I've seen both versions on the Juno First cabs pictures found on the internet (with and without the Gottlieb insert) so I could'nt tell for sure which one was the right one.

Let the hunt begin, then ;)
-
Great resto project. This is an awesome cab and game, can't wait for Eurocade to have a go at it. :)
-
I still need to exchange the one on my SW bit if you want you can have the old one. Yeah it's got some holes that don't belong there, but it sure beats having a gaping hole like that ! :)
And it IS very nicely powder coated !
-
Thanks for your offer!
Can you put it on hold for me for a few weeks please?
I should see Ully in August and he might have one coindoor for me too.
-
Great cab and great restoration!
-
Thanks for your offer!
Can you put it on hold for me for a few weeks please?
Sure thing....it's not moving anywhere soon I fear...
-
My guess is that its on hold in the SW cockpit untill it moves out for eurocade, so bring a screwdriver and you can swap the door for him ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)
-
Very good work!
-

Need to reconfigure the new one first though.....some parts will have to move from the old to the new one....not sure if there is time...
-
i wasnt serious ;)

Itsy bitsy tiny update on this baby:
During Eurocade 2012, I noticed some weird sound problems on that cab.
At one point, the only way to get sound was to leave the back door open, each time I was closing it the sounds stopped.
Last weekend I inspected the cab with my friend 4l4in and he immediately found some cold solders on the solder side of the filter board.
We noticed at least 3 culprits and of course when we pressed them, the sound from the game was coming and going.
So we decided to reflow them all, just to be on the safe side.
We flipped the board and put it back in place and it now works flawlessly! :spaceace:
Still some cosmetic work to be done and it will be ready for Eurocade 2013!
-
Can't believe i let that one go.. but glad it's in good hands.. ;) :)
-
Oh, come on, it's just yet another one of those eighties space shooter... not! ;D
-
Oh, come on, it's just yet another one of those eighties space shooter... not! ;D
LOL
Exactly my thoughts! ;D

+1!
Played it recently at Retrogamers (just a PCB in a generic cab). It's such an addicting game....audio volume was far too low, though, this game has to be played LOUD!! The sound effects are so awesome :)
I wish I had the PCB...
-
Now let's populate that poor empty thing.
Mmmh but wait, something is weird with that Coin Control joystick don't you think?
That is indeed weird. But what is even more weird, is that the joystick on my Juno First, which came straight from the USA, looks exactly the same, the same gap between the ball and the plastic housing around the shaft. It almost makes me think that this is a factory way of install.
Anyway, my ball (the joystick one) isn´t moving, so I decided to leave it like that. Originality for everything else! :D
-
Maybe you can bring the ball to the shaft
-
Why doesn't anybody listen to my advices ?
Filter boards => REMOVE THEM !!!
Their use is => null, zero, none, nothing, niente, nichts....
-
If you remove the filterboards you have to make a new harness = not original anymore..
-
I'm not touching anything inside this cab until next failure.
My skills are too limited.
If it ain't broke don't fix it ;)
-
If you remove the filterboards you have to make a new harness = not original anymore..
Depends on the game. Atari's and Midway filter boards you can simply move the connector.
And how extreme can you go in keeping it original ? Also, if it makes the game more reliable I know what I'd choose :)
-
In case of Juno First you would have to redo the wiring completely, there are about 6 or 7 separate connectors going into and going out of the filterboard. And indeed, using the filterboard is more original, that's the way I prefer it also. Of course, if the filterboard only causes trouble over and over again, then ditch it.
-
Chris, take a look at this, Juno First running on 230V :) If I can do it, then you certainly can do it.
(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Juno%20First/P1070721_zpsnw6lu1ft.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Juno%20First/P1070721_zpsnw6lu1ft.jpg.html)

-
Cool!
Mine was missing the power board so I use arcadeshop switcher -> this part is already running on 220V
but I have a second plug (american) for the power supply (feeding only my screen) and that one is indeed 110V.
I have to tidy that indeed!
-
.....and another ugly unneccesary step-down bites the dust , yesssssssss !!!
-
Oooh... will we see either of these cabs at Eurocade? If so, that is worth my trip alone.
-
I've already brought it 2 times :P
-
:spaceace: :spaceace:
I really love this game and this cab!!!
