Title: What was your first home TV game ?
Post by: level42 on April 28, 2012, 09:52:39 AM
So, it must be a TV game, not a hand-held.

This is how my brother and I started out:

An Audio Sonic TVG-4. The same model was also sold under the name "Poppy" (I just found out on the internet).

Next was a 4 switch Atari 2600 with woodgrain front.

That one is still on my parents's attic and I keep saying I must dig it up the next time I go there.....but always forget  :-\

I think we only had about 6 or 7 games or so. The only one's I clearly remember are Combat (included with the system) Pac Man and one I got for my birthday (don't remember which): Demon Attack. I used to rent games a lot in those days.

By the way I would love to find that Audio Sonic back too on the attic at my parents but I don't remember if it is still there.....

Wow, this topic brings back some sweet memories. A long long time ago (around '75 - '76) my father came home with this Pong-like game from Philips. Brilliant! Later, much later we got the same Atari 2600 like you, André. I actually did dig it up a few weeks ago also on my parents attick. It still worked!! Showed Space Invaders and Pacman to my son (3.5 years old) and my nephew (9 years). Son was impressed, nephew thought it was lame. It's all in the upbringing  ;D

Hah, that Philips game looks a bit like the transformer I had for my model trains (which is also on my parent's attic :D)

I bet my 2600 still works too. The only thing that I remember is that I "amputated" the 2nd joystick port out of it for some electronics project I did while at electronics school (MTS).
I figured then that I could get that part for free from that old-garbage TV game........
The same reasoning why most of these games got thrown away.

However, I can still get the part from the US and fix it :)

In all honesty I have to say that the vast majority of games on the 2600 can't hold my attention for more than half a minute any more. This is a bit strange because lots of the Atari 8 bit home computer games I can still play every day. Somehow there was a huge gap between these two systems, not surprising  but there are exceptions of course like Demon Attack (which is almost identical on the A8) and Yar's Revenge (which strangely never appeared on the A8 format).

It's weird because I clearly remember walking through a street and seeing a 2600 on a salon-table in a house. That was when this system was brand new (for us) and still at full price. I don't remember exactly how much they were at the start here, but it was beyond a realistic price for what my parents would allow. Only after the first price cut we got one, I don't remember who actually paid for it, probably my dad and my older brother, maybe I chipped in some too....Think my bro did holiday jobs and being "paperboy" at those times so he had some money, I was still too young for that at that time...

After that I worked holiday jobs to buy my computer systems, often my parents chipping in a part too...

By the way, let this be a thread with lots of memories about those games.

One thing I clearly remember about the Audio Sonic was at a birthday of one of my parents we dug up that game, it was already "ancient" at that time (Probably it was in my A8 "era") and my niece and I were playing it like nuts and were laughing out load at a certain moment, we were trying to do loads of tricks like extremely fast moving the "bat" from down to up while STILL managing to hit the ball....it was just one of those moments you can laugh over nothing for a very long time. At one point we managed to get the ball "caught" between our bats....the randomness was so sucky that at a certain position of both bats the ball would bounce between them endlessly....

I remember that my father came home one day after work and brought this pong tv game home.

It was a promotional item from a dutch bank "ABN"

I remember that it ran on batteries, but you could also connect an adapter.

Later my first "console" was the Philips Videopac. folowed by the "new" Atari 2600 (which is the 2600 jr afaik)

on the 2600 I had Jungle hunt, Pole position, Pit fall 2, Pacman, Space invaders, Moon Patrol, Decathlon, and yes... E.T.
I played everything like crazy exept for E.T.  :P

After that came the C64 for me, i did not have the "breadbox" but the new "White" model.

I currently don't have any of them anymore..   :-\

Did you have the G7400 or the G7000 ?

That "ABN game" is pretty funny ! Shame you don't have it anymore.

Not sure about the videopac,

But looking and judging from the pics i see online , it must be the 7400

I clearly remember the big red powerswitch  :D

Like most everyone else, my dad came home one day in the early 70's with a 'pong' game, can't remember which one, but all it did was pong. Later we got one that had a light-gun, and eventually my brother bought an Atari 2600.

I still regularly play the 2600 now, as well as the all-time classic that is Demon Attack, which has to be my most played game of all time, i still play pitfall, demolition herby and often decathlon, which i feel is far better than track and field!

This thing, it had cartridges but it was basically all pong-like games or extremely basic ones:

first home tv game was a vectrex! bought it in 1983 - and still have it to this day, including the purchase slip from back then. in the meantime, i have greatly expanded my vectrex cartridge collection though, i'll try to get some pics up if you're interested! i still think the vectrex is the best home console ever devised!!!

I remember when we bought my first Atari 2600 with my Father in Vienna around 1982-83.
We were behind the iron curtain those days and allowed to cross the Austrian border once in every 3 years, so this Atari was a very big shot in Hungary among my friends.
We had the chance to buy 3 games packed together for a nice price, we took Phoenix, Kangaroo and Yars Revenge.
I still have this machine with the original box and tons of games, it is a nice memory for me from my father.
It was placed to my workshop with my other, later consoles.

I think a separate thread on your vectrex collection would be good to see, it's an interesting console and the fact you've had it from new makes it special  :spaceace:

Not really a TV game...
My dad bought it as serious machine, but off course we used it as console...

We played Fraxxon till the late hours. I think it is the best ever space-shooter after Galaga 88. Even though it had teletext 80x72 pixel graphics, it had ubercool gameplay.

Ah, the Philips P2000, that was also the first computer that my father brought home one day. We didn't have much games for it, I believe we only had some Philips demo cassette with Othello and Hangman, amongst others. I even did my first Basic "programming" on this computer as well (mostly to print colored/blinking/double size texts on screen: PRINT CHR$(132) CHR$(128) "HELLO WORLD!", or something like that  ;D)

I played my first games on our neighbour's Colecovision back in 1984 or so (when I was about 7 years old), which has been my favourite console ever since. Last year I bought a few Colecovision sets on Marktplaats.nl and I think I've got a nice collection now, I only need to buy some more games.

I took the whole set with me on the latest Dutch Commodore Users Group, last month:

Not sure who we pittied most BITD, Spectrum or P2000 owners....I think it was the P2000. In my memory only old people had them...

Another Philips failure in this area. I mean, I still bought a Philips TV half a year ago (LED) because I always have had their TVs and never was disappointed by them, but Philips never really made it when it came to computers and game systems.
The Videopac lacked "free" prgrammable graphics which made every game look the same, although I am the first to admit that Happelaar (Munchkin) was a fun game.
The P2000 had ...uh......a built in mini tape drive that was fast and worked like a floppy including directory listings and automatic searching and loading of files!!! Graphics were none existent, it used a teletext chip, sound was some bleeping built in speaker...the keyboard was like one of a cash register and it cost way too much money IIRC....

I would love to play Fraxxon on it, or even see a video to let me change my mind about it :)

Later there was the G7400 which promissed better graphics, but that just turned out to be some background graphics while the game graphics were still G7000 like.

Much later the CD-I system.....a miss in every way. The games looked like 8 bit while STs and Amigas were the "standard" at the time.

And they had MSX of course, maybe the best of this series of failures. Such a shame because they have done a lot of innovative stuff like the compact cassette,  laserdisc and CD....

HOWEVER, it doesn't matter how much a first system sucked in the eyes of others it was YOUR first system. your first steps into the wold of computing and electronic gaming so these are still great machines now !!! Keep 'm coming !

Very common story: first TV game was a Pong clone with two "spinner" devices. I have a picture in mind but I never found something similiar on the net.

Then I bought a used VCS 2600 with some games like Combat, Outlaw, etc.

Sweet memories :)

My entry into the world of consoles came very late. If Commodore 128 counts as a TV-console, I got one in 1985. I only used it in the C64 mode though. :)
I had a couple of Game & Watch'es before that. One called Pirate I think, and Snoopy from Nintendo.

Eventually my Commodore collection grew a bit bigger. ;)

I guess it's this one, on which I played copied games like Emerald's Mine, Thunderblade, Sidewinder, Giana Sisters (!) and PacMan.

(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NjAwWDgwMA==/$%28KGrHqJ,!hQE7R7cG8qNBPIyfUkvfQ~~60_3.JPG)
and this one, at a friends house who's family imported it from Aruba or the USA. Playing Mario reminded me of Giana Sisters, but it was a great game with mushrooms and coins. Duckhunt was easy, you just pointed the gun on the tv and you always hit it.

My first proper computer was an MSX - this one -
(http://www.msx.org/wiki/images/thumb/5/52/Canon_MSX_V20.jpg/800px-Canon_MSX_V20.jpg)
I spent hours and hours on it, so much that the pins broke in the joystick ports, the big arrow keys stopped working and I had to replace it  :-[

The Konami cartridges were superb and made the same versions on other computers look really poor in comparisson. The same can't be said for a lot of other games though  :D

I have never owned a console before i bought my PS3  :o
Though, i jumped on the Amiga wagon in 1990 - and has owned 3-4 A500 and one A1200 with Blizzard 030 hardware installed (i still have it)
but the first game... afair there where 2 or 3 games in the "Amiga 500 Starter Kit": Miniature Golf, Super Cars, and Super Ski??, the first game i really liked was TwinWorld:

Then some years later Pirates from Microprose was released, and i just played the hell out of that one! heh - i reserved entire weekends so i could play the game!!:

I liked the game so much, that when i got my first PC, i was running WinUAE, playing Pirates, and "Print Screen´d" the entire world you where sailing around in, and stitched it together in Photo Shop...

Maybe the one from Körting which had controllers that happend to look like microphones?  ;D ;)
Did you check http://www.console-picture-page.de/catalog/ ?

My first console was an Atari 4 switch woodgrain which I bought in 1982 or 1983 for I think 349.-- DM (roughly 175.-- EUR) as a special bundle (by the shop) including a set of paddle controllers and Air-Sea Battle.
Sold it and most of my games in 1984 to buy my first C64. That one died during a thunderstorm and was replaced with a C64II. An Amiga 2000 and later 4000 followed.
Didn't buy another console until I started collecting (classic) video games and home computers some time in (late?) 90s.

Arch that is indeed an impressive and great looking collection !! Even I as an Atari man am impressed ;);)

Nice Barbarian poster, played that on the ST quite a bit. I was both shocked and amused when I chopped off the head of the opponent for the first time....it was the worst gore I had ever seen in a game till then. The little monster kicking the head away made it even "worse" but I couldn't help laughing either....

I never bought a new console after the 2600 either. IMHO consoles were not a smart choice as you could -only- play games on them while homecomputers offered so much more and games were well....uhm...easier to get.

I also saw the NES a bit as a child's machine mainly caused by games like Kirby. I also thought the NES wasn't really much more powerful than my 600 XL at the time, which was probably true, but I did miss the Mario games on it because of that....

The only new console I bought after the 2600 was .....the Wii !!
I did buy a used SNES when it was just passed it's peak though, just to play SMW. I also got a Dreamcast when I started in this hobby...never used it enough.....gotta dig it up again to play some SC and Samba De Amigo !

Nothing bad about Kirby! He (or she) was way cooler than Mario!
BTW, Kirby could not have influenced your opinion about the NES. If it did, you got to know about the NES AFTER the SNES!
Kirby is from 1993, where the NES itself was celebrating its 10th anniversary already, and the SNES was out in the wild for 2 years as well. Kirby is the perfect showcase of what the NES was capable off, with maxing out every bit of power. It has the biggest ROM, and even a little bit of RAM for game saving and pushes the limits of graphic and sound possibilities.

Hehe, thanks guys. Yes, it all fits snugly into the cupboard. Very girlfriend-friendly. It makes my office look almost normal. ;D

Barbarian ruled, and me and my friend played it all the time. We used to start each game with simultaneous head chops, and the guy who pulled it off just a millisecond ahead of the other did the kill. Good times, and I miss my mate.

Oh, and three thumbs up for Maria Whittaker!  :pac: :pac: :pac:

The very first home TV game that entered in the family house (thanks to my big brother) was a TV PONG clone, but I can't remember which model. I would say it was under the 'TANDY' label (radioshack in Europe). In addition to play PONG variants, I also remember a game when you have to set the speed of a bike running on three levels, in order to prepare a jump over something? (Does it ring a bell in your memory by any chance?)
L8ter, I played on several home systems like Videopac, Atari 2600... but my very first home TV game owned by me was the best one : CBS COLECOVISION  :-* :-* :-*

Sound like Atari's Stunt Cycle, the home version of their arcade game:

Or did you mean that your Pong console included such a game? If so, did it have cartridges or where all the games built-in?

This one ?

http://www.pong-picture-page.de/catalog/popup_image.php?pID=1176&osCsid=ohju168h17e0kao84v770ndfq7

It has a picture of a motor cycle that looks like its going to jump over a bus....

here are all the Tandy's on that site:
http://www.pong-picture-page.de/catalog/index.php?osCsid=ohju168h17e0kao84v770ndfq7&manufacturers_id=161&osCsid=ohju168h17e0kao84v770ndfq7

and Radio Shack.

Actually, Radio Shack was (is !) the name of the electronics chain store in the US and Tandy was the name of a lot of their products. The TRS-80 is probably the most famous Tandy product but they also sold audio equipment etc. etc. under that name. I remember there actually was a Radio Shack/Tandy store in the Rotterdam area back in the 80s but can't remember where it was. Then it still also sold a lot electronics parts.

In the US Radio Shack still exists but they are in the malls now and more focussed on mobile phones nav systems etc. but they still had electronic components too the last time I visited (last summer) although much less.

About the Colecovision, I remember looking at it the first time at my favorite Atari store (Telekoder in Rotterdam) when it was just released in Holland and my jaw dropped ! It was Donkey Kong of course and I thought WOW this is exactly like the arcade ! The experience was ruined by the controllers though. I still can't understand that they designed them like that. They were way too large for kids' hands with all the (rather useless) keypad and the stick was way too short, yes I was already anal about controls then :):)

I remember it had the same connector as the Atari 2600 and A8 but I don't remember if those sticks worked on the Colecovision. However, it was definitly my dream system but I knew I would never get it since we had the 2600 for such a short time then...And then I saw DK on the 600 XL .....

Yes! It was that game, or a clone of it. Here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9V2F6HKryI) of the original one.
I can tell if the one we had was a good port, but I remember playing that game on the home TV game I'm talking about...

Or did you mean that your Pong console included such a game? If so, did it have cartridges or where all the games built-in?

Yes, it is. I'm 100% sure it wasn't an Atari model, but a Tandy model... no cartridge, all built-in.

This one ?

It has a picture of a motor cycle that looks like its going to jump over a bus....

Wow, yes! It must be that one! Well spotted André :)
Now, let's chase for that one in order to confirm!  :P

I met for the first time the Colecovision in my local shopping center... the first game I saw on it was Cabbage Patch Kids, and then ... ZAXXON! Almost like the Arcade!  :-* :-* :-*
I agree with the controllers : they suck, but at the time, we had to do with that. I don't remember to complain to much. My friends had 2600, VideoPac or Intellevision, and the joysticks were bad also!  ;D
The keypad was useless most of the time, expect for one on my favorite games on that system : Gateway to Apshaï  :-*

I currently don't have any of them anymore..   :-\

That "ABN game" is pretty funny ! Shame you don't have it anymore.

I was at a friend today to do some computer related stuff, and when i was ready, he asked me;

Hey you like retro games uh ?
I got something for you...
