Title: Removing rust from a joystick

I'm in the process of restoring my Galaga CP and parts of the joystick are covered with a thin layer of rust.

Of course i want to remove it, but what's the best way to do this?

After that primer and paint (spray cans, good brand) because else it will look the same within days or weeks.
