Title: Hi, new guy here.
Post by: Rorsach on October 02, 2011, 02:27:25 PM
Got introduced to this forum by Polderarcade, whose nice "little" arcade i visited last week when i picked up his monstrous JAMMA-Cabinet. That cab is my first real-life working arcade cab, but actually already my second cab ever.

A couple of weeks ago, on my way to work, i saw a lonely cab standing outside on someone's driveway. I gave them a call when i had arrived at work (only 5 minutes later) and asked what they were going to do with it. Their answer: take it to the dump. I could have it for free if i was quick about it, so i took one of our forklifts and a pallet and went to pick up the cab.

I think i did good:

It's complete and in very decent state, too bad the game/screen aren't playing ball:

I've been tinkering a bit, cleaning, measuring voltages and reseating the roms, but still no luck. The board has already been frankensteined way back in the '80, with extra spaghetti everywhere on the PCB.

My kids playing Marvel Superheroes Vs STreetfighter on the monstercab in the morning (iPhone pic, bad quality):

This cab is in the process of being MAME'd, i've already got a PC loaded with a couple of emu's and GameEx and the JPAC is on it's way. Now if only i can convince the wife to let me keep this monster in the living room.

You didn't do good...........YOU DID BRILLIANT !!!

You do realize that these kind of "found a cab for free on the curbstone" stories only happen in the US right..??
Totally amazing !!!!! I love the Universal's for their "overdone" artwork and of course the 2nd marquee.

And...welcome aboard !!

Welcome here! ;)
Yes, Etienne is right, you should try to repair the pcb or find a replacement before slaughtering it to mame.
Here is an expensive one, maybe you can get some discounts there ;)

Read again guys, he says he will be mameing the monster cab not the CA.

The CA seems to simply have a sync issue on the monitor...could be as easy as adjusting a pot...

No way i'm raping the Cosmic Alien. First thing is making an adapter to test the gameboard in the JAMMA cab, then i'll know if the PCB is toast or the monitor, the fingerboard is on it's way and the soldering iron is hot.

Actually, i'm a complete newbie who knows how to study hard (if only i had studied this hard when i was in school ;().

The last couple of weeks have been a crash-course in electronics and arcade cab restauration, i never even knew how to handle a multimeter and now i'm building a DIY video probe and i'm waiting on a logic probe to arrive.

Hi,

Love the story about the cab, and it really looks great! Never saw one of these.
Ok, now I know it does happen, I just hope someone dumps a couple of Dragon's Lair and Space Aces when I'm on the way to work.

Have fun.

So far I only found 2 abandoned free cabs like that but they certainly weren't as nice as this beautiful CA.
Congratulations and welcome here!
