did you score a Qbert ::)
-
Not fair, the Eurocade crew already knows what it is. This probably also means that Robin's is also arrived....right ?
Anyway happy birthday Pieter and enjoy your ggg-ggggg---ggg game..... :)
-
Thanks, i guess Robin has to wait a few more days, mine was shipped the same day Robin paid for his..
Anyway, here are some pictures:

Galaga???
Never heard of it. ;D ;D ;D
Must be a Galaxian clone. ;D
-
looking good pieter ! :spaceace:
-
Looks to be in great condition ! does it work?
-
So COOL 8)
I hate waiting ;D
-
Nope, it doesn't work but is complete.. monitor was smoking when i turned it on this morning. ???
But i knew that before, the monitor from the group-deal will be used for this!
The rest looks great, hardly any wood damage, marque, bezel, cpo all are intact.
@ Robin, did you receive the call from the delivery company?
-
Hey Robin, let them deliver it at the Eurocade location....afterwards we can WALK it to you home ;);)
-
Congraturlations!!!! And welcome in the *exclusive* club for Galaga owners (andré's so sad that hi's not a member) ;D
Can i ask where you guys bought it?? (Paul50)?
-
Yes, i bought it from Paul...
-
I hate it when monitors smoke, it's such an unhealthy habit of some of them ;)
Pretty sure the NIB WGs are non-smoking :p
-
Will it be easy to swap them? Knowing i got 2 left hands? ;)
-
another classic added to the mix, pieter! congratulations :spaceace:
-
no call :-\
-
Okay, i'll ask Paul when he's going to ship yours when he answers my last email...
-
Welcome to the club! 8)
No so long ago, it was almost impossible to catch such cab' in Europe without importing it from US. I got mine in UK (at high price ) in 2007...
Thanks to Paul now, for helping most of us to catch theses 'beauties' from US at fair prices. :)
edit : topic title changed... more explicit ;)

Buying a Galaga? what a strange idea... ::)

Buying a Galaga? what a strange idea... ::)
yes what a surprise ! ::) and a must have on my list :spaceace:
-
Hahaha, i guess almost everybody saw this one coming! ;)
Still can't believe i got a dedicated Galaga in my living room! :D I first saw one in real life while picking up my rolling thunder at rob's place. It's was a scratch build and looked beautiful. After that i always dreamed of owning one. Played it again at "Play now" in Brussel and loved it even more. The mysterious space theme, beautiful black cab and great game play makes it one of the ultimate classic arcade cab's for me! Here is a closer look at the cab.
The cpo looks good, there are a few small cutouts but i'm okay with that.
Bezel is also in good condition, glad to see because a new one is expensive.
The condition of the front art is good, and i also love the illustration.
The side art is missing, and there is minor wood damage, nothing that can't be fixed.
The inside is a bit of a different story. As told before the monitor is toasted. And after turning the game on and inserting some credits i heard nothing. The marque and coin door light work though. I checked all the fuses with a multimeter and they are okay.
I found this at the bottom of the cab, it isn't really connected to anything. Is this the board that kept the cab from distorting police radio or am i totally off?

-
Lol! Now quite hating on this CLASSIC and give me some technical advice like you always do! ;D ;D ;) ;) ;)
-
Classic ? When it's running i'll come over for a weekend and play a game or two.
One on Saturday.
One on Sunday.
it's so easy even I last for a day :p
Anyway.. yes that looks like a filter board. Remove the board from the cab and put it in a place you,ll never see it again. Or was it the other way around ? Ohw man sorry....I just can't help it must
be the Belgian beer, sorry man !!
The cab looks amazing IMHO. You only need side art..
From now I'll be serious sorry guys.....
-
No need to apologize, just know I'm good at karate too!! ;D ;D ;) ;) ;)
-
Really ?? Woehaaa ..... I'm scared !

;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I'll drink a 2nd beer to my good friend Pieter and his wonderful Galaga, a beautiful machine indeed !
Replacing the monitor is a piece of cake.
In theory. I still haven't got the one in my Ms.Pac entirely straight... as you may remember I had to widen the holes on the frame....
And....it's the same cab I'm afraid....
-
Pieter what is the sn of your galaga ?
-
Nice classic !!! :-* :-*
A great add to your collection - congrats :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Congratulations Pieter, You did it! You're MOST WANTED CAB (or second most wanted after DK, which you also have) is IN YOUR HOME!! :spaceace:
And she is looking very pretty, two pieces of nice new side art will finish her off completely. And I'm sure that a new bright WG monitor will do the trick. Enjoy it, it's one of the best classic games out there, better than the other GAL.... , IMO
You know what would be great at the eurocade 2012 edition: a row of Galaga's!
-
Pieter do you know your galaga is 110 volts !
-
Hihihihi.....the "Gal Wars", Galaxian vs. Galaga....will it ever end ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
It's funny because I can't think of a game that has so many controversy between it's predecessor and follow-up. (Waiting for Lascheck to correct me ;D ;D ;D)
I'm also very inconsequent about it: I love Ms.Pac much more than I do Pac (OK, not an official follow up, but we didn't know that back then).
Seriously, as I've explained many times before: I don't hate Galaga at ALL. In fact I enjoy playing it, there are loads and loads of games that are far worse.
Played it a couple of times at Funspot. The thing is simply that when I first saw Galaxian back in the early 80's I was floored by it. We were used to SI and here comes a full color game (the first !) where the aliens instead of simply waiting for a bullet up their arse are breaking out of the pattern and very aggressively attack you with screaming sound...
However the most baffled I was when (after some considerable play for me in those days) I saw the first alien actually going round for a 2nd try to kill me. I was so baffled that it got me the first time right away....I was simply only thinking: How can they make it do that ! It felt like it was _really_ alive.
I know this sounds stupid today, but consider what we were used to (pretty simple B/W games with ultra low built-in "AI".....
Also, I thought the game sounds totally contributed to the atmosphere. The increasing tone of the background sound and then the sudden stopping of part of the "soundtrack" when there only a few aliens left really builds up the tension. The screaming sound (for those days !!!) when the aliens dive to you...all very well done.
So yes I played a lot of Galaxian back then. I didn't play a lot of Galaga. Didn't like the movement of the aliens which seemed drunk when they come down at you...yes it made it harder to hit them (a bit) but it was like unfair and against logic to me.
And the sounds.....sorry, but I still really think they are totally gay for a shooter. It sounds like Pac.
Anyway, I swear this is the last I write about it, again I DO NOT hate Galaga, but yes there is very little chance that I will ever own one...Everyone is entitled to his opinion right, but I find it fun to tease around a bit...
This is the last thing I write about that, now I will start helping Gyruss to get this baby running ! :)
-

Maybe thats what fried the monitor...
-
Don't think so, Pieter has a step-down transformer....right ?
-

he has, but did he used it ? thats the question ;D

What about this one (http://klov.net/game_detail.php?game_id=9899)? ;D ;D ;D
-
I used the step down transformer, and paul already told me the monitor was broken..
So were do i go from here?
i disconnected the monitor from the power supply plus pcb and already checked all the fuses. The marque and coin-door lights work. I hear nothing when i insert some credits and try to start a game.
Replace the monitor first? or start doing some voltage measurements?
-
Look at your mail ;D
-
Great! Thanks!! ;D ;D
-
Robin has been so kind to assist me through the process by email, very nice of him and he's an excellent teacher/instructor!! :spaceace: :spaceace:
First thing he told me was to remove this connector from the pcb, and measure the voltage with a multimeter:
A should be 12V, B is the ground, C should be 5V
(http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/328/galagapcb.jpg)
The 12v is way off:
And so is the 5v:
Robin told me the 5V is waaaaay to high, this has to be brought back to 5.1v before i could put the connector back on the pcb.
So i turned the voltage down with this Pot-meter, luckily it still worked and also brought the 14.8v back to 13.9v.
He told me when i put the connector back on the pcb the voltage would go down a bit, and of course robin was right! So i turned it up to 5.1v again. Now i should be hearing some noise/buzz coming from the speakers, and yes there is a low humming sound, which tells me the pcb isn't totally death.
Next up:
- Clean the edge connector with a pencil eraser
- swapping the monitor for a new one or use my ms pac monitor for a little while.
-
Yeuhhhhh !
I can tell you pieter; the only way to learn this kind of things is to just do it (with assistence in this case)
Experimenting and logic thinking is the way to go ;)
-
Yes, that's totally true Etienne, and robin is a great help.
Still don't have any idea what the 12V and 5V actually do, and have a hard time reading and understanding the schematics.
-
No offence, but i think reading schematics is in your case still a bit too early..
Start with the basics first, then the logica should kick in very fast ;D
learn the principals like Volts DC and AC, ohms, ampere's, etc etc first, move on later ..
these links will keep you busy for the next hours ;D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhQ7d3BK3KQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhQ7d3BK3KQ)
oh remember that we also did not learn/know all this things in 1 day ;)
-
Thanks! I was looking at the schematics to find out what the 12v, 15v and ground of the connector were.
Couldn't find it but somebody on klov asked the same question some time ago.
-
Guys, this is a tutorial I definitely understand (so far) so a big thank you to all involved.
I will watch it closely, because soon my turn will come ::)
Thanks for sharing this resto!
-
A quick tutorial about basics for noobs like me would be great at Eurocade. ;)
-
Actually I have a table at eurocade this year where I demonstrate everything you should NOT do during a resto.
Here's the schedule if anyone is interested ->
10h-12h: 999 funny ways to discharge a monitor
12h-14h: plug first, test later
14h-16h: a little water on the floor gives a cool web2.0 look to your cabs
16h-18h: your tongue is an as good current conductor as anything
18h-20h: grounding is so yesterday

Lol, you should add to your list: drink and drive an Outrun. ;D

We'll do that demo together Béla ;)
sorry for derailing Gyruss.

Pieter, i advice you the book liquidx adviced ;) https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2487.0
it's really great for learning the basics in electronic & reading schematics. (tested and approved :)
-
Thanks for reminding me Pascal, i ordered it right away!

and dont forget the great link that Andre posted:

Time to remove the damaged monitor. I've done this 4 times before but it still makes me a bit nervous. ::)
First i remove these 3 screws on the back of the cab which keep the bezel in place.
disconnected the control panel, so i could remove the bezel
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/7093/imag4023.jpg)
and also the smoked glass
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2061/imag4025.jpg)
Time to discharge the monitor
(http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/8083/imag4027.jpg)
One of the screws was stuck so i used i little bit wd40
(http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9379/imag4028.jpg)
And took the monitor outside for a little cleaning
(http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/9094/imag4030.jpg)
-
Good job Gyruss!
I recently had to discharge a bunch of monitors and now I'm a tiny bit more confident with that (or should I say foolhardy?).
I also noticed that some Philips monitors had a built-in discharge tool.
Now, how convenient is that!
-
Yeah, Philips was great when production was still done in (west) Europe.
I hope they still are, for my 3rd (main) TV I again choose a Philips product. I've had excellent performance (which means LONG, my last TV lasted 10 years and apart from loosing focus in the corners still works fine).
So yes, another CRT bites the dust....still have to get used to the LED screen, but I must say that the drawbacks are more than compensated by the advantages...
-
Ah, thats pretty cool! :D
-
Now that the monitor is removed, things get a little more complicated.
I have a new one lying around from the group deal, and it's a perfect candidate for the Galaga. But how do i connect it?
I assume i have to buy new connectors for the cab, which have the same seize as the monitor? And what about the voltage issue, because it's from the U.S?
Here are some pic's from the Galaga connectors and from the new monitor:
Galaga:
The new monitor:
I'll take a look at the frame later on, first i want to see if there's anything on screen. Robin told me there's also a second option to do this:
Use my working ms pac monitor! I thought they are exactly the same but they aren't, could i just plug the Galaga connector below in my ms pac monitor?

About the power supply you don't need to worry, it'll "eat" everything...
About the connector of the power: I went lazy and cut both off and used this:
OK, not the neatest way but hey....it works great. And it's only two screws to loosen if I ever need to remove it.
I can't remember about the signals connection....
-
Great, I'll get me one of those...
-
New Side art arrived today, along with the front art and marque for 2 other dlf members, i'll bring it with me tomorrow guys! ;D
Got to give it up to Phoenix Arcade! Great quality artwork and (very) fast shipping.
-
Another small update: I cleaned the control panel, buttons plus joystick, and gave the the bolts a new layer of paint.
I also stripped the inside of the cabinet
(http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/792/imag4345.jpg)
I found the following objects at the bottom of the cab, under the coin-mechanism. A manual request card, which explains why the manual is missing and a list with numbers and names, which tells me something how much the machine made during the years.
I also found this token from Showbiz Pizza place. Here's what wiki says about them:
ShowBiz Pizza Place was a restaurant chain popular in the 1980s. Its history is greatly intertwined with that of its main competitor and eventual successor, Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre. Both companies found early success, owing partially to the rise in popularity of arcade games at the time. The basic concept was to offer pizza, a large selection of arcade games, and an animatronic stage show as a complete package of food and entertainment. The largest difference between the two, and easiest way to distinguish the two chains, was the different robotics and the mascots that each concept used. The mascot for Showbiz was Billy Bob, an overall-clad hillbilly bear.
Besides the showbiz token i found something much cooler, it's a 1982 Qix World's Fair Coin. This is what Wiki say's about the Fair:
The 1982 World's Fair, formally known as the Knoxville International Energy Exposition, was held in Knoxville, Tennessee, in the United States. The theme of the exposition was "Energy Turns the World." It opened on May 1, 1982, and closed on October 31, 1982 after receiving over 11 million visitors. Seven video arcade game tokens were minted for the 1982 World's Fair, each depicting a different game. These tokens were given out at the arcade at the World's Fair itself. The seven games on each of the tokens are Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man,
Space Invaders, Qix, Gorf, Scramble, and Donkey Kong.

-
Those tokens are cool ! :spaceace:
Put them in the "vitrine" ;)
-
yeah I remember the World Fair...:)
but 11 million visitors in half a year? I guess it's 1.1 million
-
Cool finds! It gives even more soul to this beauty of a cab!
-
I am always SO curious about the history of my machines....usually I know nothing to very litle about it...
My Centi has been at a dentists waiting room for a long time (brilliant idea, instead of those boring magazines).
These coins and that litle list MIGHT be an indication, but it could just as well that some people accidentally put them in on a different location. I prefer to dream though, so let's assume your Gaga was at those places :)
VERY cool !
Can you get the coins nice and shiny again ?
-
Well, i definitely know were it started it's live:

HUUHHHHHHHHHH???
Victor company of Japan = JVC, but that model nr is G07 !! This sticker has to be from the monitor but I never heard about Japanese G07's ?!?
Do you have a pic of the old monitor's chassis ?
-
I gave my old monitor to robin maybe he can take a picture.

You should check out this documentary about that place and the animatronic show: http://www.rockafiremovie.com/
It's a great story and anyone with even a little nostalgia for that period would like it.
-
thanks, i'll check it out! :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
the tokens are very cool :P
I fix your pcb 8)
-
Damn, that's fast!! Thank you very much Robin!
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Fact: The 3 stage show at Chuck e Cheese is pretty much some of the robots from the Rock afire Explosion
-
Yet another fact: Chuck E Cheese was also founded by Nolan Bushnell
-
Your fixed galaga pcb (bad 2114 and 1 broken leg from the starfield generator)
I have reburn 1 eprom also for normal speed
-
It all sounds a bit like star trek to me, but i love the picture! ;)
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Look what i found at the bottom of the galaga. ;D ;D

that is cool 8)
-
Haha, yeah that was often done.
Probably a misprint or otherwise rejected part.
-
Took care of a some chipped wood at the bottom of the cab, with ms pac man ghosts staring at me. :D
Fist wood filler and sanding.
after that masking and some paint
(http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/10/imag4368.jpg)
Looks alright

He Andre, next time when you are in the neighbourhood of Gyruss, bring your colormatch sample ;)
-
Yeah nice idea !
But maybe it was rejected because the blue color was 1% off ;);););)
-
Nice job, Pieter!
For my info, what kind of paint did you use (don't answer black please ::)).
-
I used black satin, it looks okay but not perfect.
Maybe (if not too lazy) i'll give both sides a fresh coat of paint, but first i've got to fix the wood damage on the other side.

Talking about wood repairs,
I am now restoring my staircase and needed to fill some dents, and at first used alabastine pro filler, but that is like all fillers shrinking when drying.
also that took ages to hard, so i looked for an alternative.
I went to the local "action" and bought 2 component "polyester plamuur" i think it was 5€ orso.
anyway, i can really reccomend that, its "workable" for 5 minutes after mixing the instructions stated...
and that was right ! after 10 minutes its so hard you cannot squeez it in anymore, and after 1 cup of coffee (say another 10 - 15 minutes) rock hard !
i could sand it down 25 minutes after apply-ing :o
So i never use normal "plamuur" anymore..
just take a bit and mix it, apply it, wait 30 minutes and sand it down ..
So action it is and look for a little can that says "Soriso" (http://www.soriso.nl/)

And it does not matter if its big or small that you need to fill, its rock hard after 30 minutes..

As you can see this is not a thin layer i put in this corner ;D
from they're site:
2 component thixotropic filler based on unsaturated polyester resin. Ecological and free of asbestos and silicone. Use on metal and polyester, marble, deep wood repair (rotten wood) etc. Due to it’s substances this filler is ideal to fill AS WELL as finish materials! 2 in 1

Ah, i'm using the same product but my brand is Alabastine, voor staalhard oppervlak! ;)
-
Yeah I've got Alebastine as well but IIR it was more expensive than 5 euros.
i need to go use the stuff on my Ms.Pac. The part that scares me are the lower sides. Need to fix long areas....and im clumsy with this stuff..
-
just apply it, and use a belt sander if you need to sand alot ;)
-
Robin told me to glue (or nail) a small piece of wood at the back of the cab (where the damage is) before filling.
Made it pretty easy, just let it dry, remove the wood and sand the rest down.

Yeah that is the idea, but how to do the round corners ?
-
Use t molding and fill it
Use auto polyester plamuur (from the gamma)
-
Poor ninty, it's not going to be black for a long time anymore, dust grey it will be. :D
-
Ha, great tip Robin!

Yesterday 2 crazy German guys came to pickup my paperboy and they were so nice to deliver me my Galaga pcb and monitor frame.
So, i put everything back in the cab and installed the new monitor, and there it is:

Hi friends, I landed on this forum totally randomly because I googled "Coldplay".

PS: good job on that Galaga pinball machine you have there!
