Yes! Time for another road trip. ;D This one is going to be very special. Ronald Reagan and I are going to pick up 3 (ultimate) classic cabinets from Paul 50's. :P
The games are: ms pac man (for my brother), donkey kong jr (for Ronald) and donkey kong for me! :P ;D :)
As usual we start in Hilversum, we have to travel more then 530 kilometers to get to paul 50's place in Lohne, Germany

Our (very expensive) transportation for the day

-
Very nice cabs, thanks for sharing the roadtrip with us! ;D
-
Nice roadtrip! Are the machines working?
-
Nope, only the jr is working at the moment (with some missing characters onscreen). >:(
I think a new pcb will fix the pac man, mine dk needs a lot of work, i'll open a restoration topic soon.

-
love the mascot as well. i guess this was the second of many more roadtrips to paul's place. good luck with your machines and restos, mine will have to stay at paul's place a little while longer ...
-
Did you buy the DK3 next to mine dk? It looks great, the cpo is in excellent condition.
-
Yes, I am very happy with my cab. I will upload pictures of it later. It is in pretty good condition. ;D ;D :spaceace:
Stuff grumpy Gyruss forgot to mention:
Paul told us some interesting stories about importing the cabs to Europe. He stated, that what Nuno with the ninty's and Ckong with the PacMan deal, pulled off is quite unique. As a music box and pinball seller, he stated that in those communities, bulkdeals like that could have never happened. He also said the MK and Terminator etc. were part of the bulkdeal he had to made. Besides that, his second shipment container was full and he said some 6 to 8 cabinets where still waiting for him in the US to be shipped the next time. Don't know about any titles of cabs.
As for World of Lies, Paul told us that he did some business with him too, and World of Lies never paid him. He just doesn't feel like paying. Listening to his stories, you start to realize what a total dickhead this guy must be, selling stuff to other people that doesnt even belong to him!! crazy
When we started uploading the cabs in the van, I think it was Paul's dad who coordinated the whole stuff. Very nice man, and he made sure all the cabs were safe and sound for our roadtrip back.
On our way back, we passed 2 Burger Kings, but we missed the exits!! F*CK, we were so hungry.
When we got home, we were just half an our late to return the van to the rental company. Which costs us another day rent. CRAP!
Anyhow, we were really happy with our cabs. Never even thought about owning one someday.  :ghost: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Great story guys. Love the pics, and why is McDonalds a lesser company. I happen to like them a lot.
Gyruss, is this your brother's first cab? Did you give him the FEVER! ;D
I wish you a lot of fun with restoring your cab, it's always great to make something pretty special looking pretty nice.
And I think that our little community has built up quite some credit with Paul, I sure hope that he has gotten the taste of it and that we will see more classics in the future.
-
nice catch for the three of you :) have fun , can not wait to see the restoration
-
yes I think you are right about the credit part.
We instructed and adviced him with several titles from cabs that he would certainly sell, like: Q-bert, Tapper, BurgerTime, Donkey Kong etc. But he also stated that he doesn't want to end up with too much stock. I think he has over 30 cabs right now, and he wants to sell them first I guess, before he starts importing new containers again.
He also said that he had a lot of emails on his ebay postings, so I think he will sell his stuff pretty fast
-
Great story guys! :spaceace:
i cant wait for mine to arrive...
I think ill go to the local McD now!!!! ;D

Gyruss, is this your brother's first cab? Did you give him the FEVER! ;D
I hope, he was already talking about the 'bad' shape of the cab and selling it to make a profit ??? >:(
My brother is a guy who likes new and shiny things, maybe some decals will chance his opinion.

i can outbid him for 1euro :)
-
Hahaha, let's fix the machine and then ask him again, i'm sure he will chance his mind after a few rounds. ;D
-
Great story guys! :spaceace:
i cant wait for mine to arrive...
What, no road-trip? :)
-
Yesss !!!! What a story since the beginning of this order, isn't it? ;) But it finally happened and I'm really glad to see you both having your 'dream' cabinet :) ...and what a great cabinet 'Ms Pac Man' for the bro' as a first game!!! It may looks 'so easy' now, but not so long time ago, Ms Pac Man was almost impossible to catch here (I've to travel to UK for an empty one... and I was looking for one since few years)! Anyway, now take some great times for the restorations, and thanks for the road trip of course :-*

:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
yes and thank you once again Nuno. We were really tired when we got home, but also VERY HAPPY :spaceace: :spaceace:
Latest update on this story: the Ms PacMan is fully working again, so says a just received textmessage with a lot of !!!!'s in it ;D ;D
-
Yes, thanks again Nuno! It was indeed a great story, and i couldn't be happier with my choice. ;D
The ms pac man was a relatively easy fix. At first the machine didn't work at all, only the marque was lighting up. So i installed my working pcb and there was sound but no screen. After some investigation i found out a wire that was connected to the monitor fuse was cut. So after soldering this wire back, the monitor was working again. ;D
The pcb was also easy to fix, just replace the ribbon cable and clean a few eroms. :D Here are some pictures:
As you can see this one also has the speed and inverted level hack. >:(
(http://a.imageshack.us/img7/7389/imag3044.jpg)
So my brother is very happy with his cab, he wants to keep it as original as possible and already decided not to sell it. ;D
Next up: Donkey Kong Junior. :P
-
If you need some eproms changed, let me know.
-
Thanks for the offer, I have to check with my brother ;D
-
yesterday we tested the DK jr and the DK pcb in the DK jr cab.
At first there was no image on the screen with the DK jr. When we cleaned it up a bit, the game started, with sound, but there were no images of the characters on the screen. Everything else was visible, in bright colors.
Unfortunately the DK didn't do anything.
-
Yes, 2 bad my donkey kong pcb isn't working, but i already expected that . >:(
Here are some pictures of Ronald Reagan his JR
(http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/8914/imag3055.jpg)
The cabinet is in quite a good state, but the t-molding is wrong and the side art is missing
(http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/8175/imag3054.jpg)
As you can see, no game characters. ??? The monitor is still very good though
(http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/8434/imag3052.jpg)
The inside and monitor still need some cleaning
(http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/5458/imag3057.jpg)
Sometime ago I read a troubleshooting list for DK pcb's. Do you guys know if this also applies for jr?
-
http://www.brasington.org/arcade/tech/dkj/
-
Already found that one but thanks. :D
-
Thank you for the troubleshooting website! I could use that on my DK.
-
http://www.mikesarcade.com/arcade/repairs/dkong.html this one is also quite handy
-
today I received a package from the US
(http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/9969/img2142g.th.jpg) (http://img692.imageshack.us/i/img2142g.jpg/)
Before I could open it, I had to pay some extra taxes..
23 euro's in total. NICE
(http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/9360/img2138k.th.jpg) (http://img411.imageshack.us/i/img2138k.jpg/)
There it is. My Donkey Kong Junior side art. It looks really fresh. ( I got it from Mikesarcade.com)
(http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/2959/img2141p.th.jpg) (http://img337.imageshack.us/i/img2141p.jpg/)
I will post pics of the attaching proces soon
-
So I did my first side-art attachment on my Donkey Kong Junior. It was kind of tricky, but I pulled it off alright.
At first I cleaned the sides of the cab, and removed some old stickerbits, also the old instruction sticker on the CPO.
the new CPO instruction sticker, it came along with the sideart.
the equipment I used for the proces:
Before I started, I looked up some DK jr pics on the internet to make sure I got the right height to place the side art sticker. After measuring up the side of the arcade I attached the sticker with tape to the cabinet and drew a pencil line over the sideart on the cab, to make sure it stayed in it's place.
The outline of the sticker with pencil, just as an extra backup.
The technique I used to peel of the sticker, I got from this youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7u-qiteSOo where you first attach the top half of the sticker by cutting of the top half of the backside of the sticker and then slowly pull it down.
It was kind of tricky so I didnt make photo's of this proces, because it's quite a hassle while standing with a scissor in your mouth peeling of the backside of a huge sticker with the sweat running over your back and your eyes all over the place for air-bulbs..
But it came out fresh!
to make sure, the sideart is on the exact same width on both sides, I measured the backside of the cab which is of course vertical (but a straight line) and the distance to the red boxed line that is running through the whole sideart as background, if you know what I mean.. Kind of hard to explain, but for me it worked. I am happy with the result.
and there was a little pain in the ass part:
But that came out fine too.
Next up, the coin door:
-
nice job, i like the donkey kong artwork a lot!
-
Looks great, the designers made awesome jobs those years! ;D
-
Best site art ever! Looks sharp!
-
Nice job. :) One question though, I noticed that there is some damage on the sidepanel, did you ever consider restoring it?
-
yes there is a little damage on the side indeed. But overall it is in quite good condition. There is hardly any scratch or whatever.
My plan is to first fix all the big problems, like the missing side-art, the broken pcb, the cpo etc and then move on to the smaller things like the pacman bite you noticed.
-
I'm looking for a high score save kit for my brother's ms pac man.
Do you guys know what the best option is besides the 96-1 multi kit?
