Judge Dredd? :o

Oooooh, you guys are GOOD !!! :D

Yes it's a Judge Dredd..

That's whey I said "judge"  and "dread"ful weather in the first posting ;)

Anyway, I sold the Getaway and it will be picked up tomorrow. Not sure yet when I will pick up the JD. It's completely dead BUT I have some hope that this time it really is just a fuse ;)

The machine looks very nice and is complete with the topper. I have to say I did a sweet deal too....the only drawback: I have to get it out of a basement ! And this is a wide-body machine :S

So, the deal came through after all. Nice catch, and it will be nice to see a 'I got myself a pinball' roadtrip. But there may be more soon.

I have only one worry: It's a wide-body and the Getaway is not...I hope it will fit between the SW cockpit and the wall :S

I already read that I need to get the "Deadworld mod" for it....sigh, here we go again ;)
Hahaha, first have to find some guys willing to help me drag it up the stairs at the sellers place.....any volunteers ?  ;D ;D

This, hopefully shouldn't be a problem, the backbox is the same width on widebody as on normal width pins, so unless you have something sticking in under the backbox you should be home safe.

I had one (see here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=344.0)). My first pinball @ home. I got it because the price was nice, it was full working... but I never tried this game before buying it. I love risk  ;D
This pinball is a little bit special... no bumper... and a big area who hide often the ball on the top of the playfield. The Deadworld looks cool, but as you said an new set of rom is needed to make this thing real cool to play with. I love the music on this one (a lot of electric guitar), but for some reason this game start to be boring very fast in my opinion... so I sold it, and replace it by a Cirqus Voltaire  :-* :-* :-*
Anyway, have fun with it  ;)

Yeah, I knew that it rang a bell to me someway but I had forgotten that you had it....

Well, let's see, I haven't played it either. For pinball I have chosen the path of "upgrading" from time to time, and believe me, the first steps are going great ;)
Title: Re: Another HUGE road-trip ahead....but o-so-sweet :)
Post by: level42 on September 02, 2010, 12:19:24 PM
Well yesterday evening was the "road-trip".

Well what can I say. First I was delayed because my wife had some other appointments arranged. At least I had arranged a strong helper, a nice van and the seller to be in his new house for the pick-up.

We went down the "basement" to pick up the machine. Folded the backbox on the front, tied it down and brought it towards the stairs. Just by looking we already concluded that there was NO way that the backbox would fit through the staircase !!!! There was no other exit so we already wondered how that thing had ever come down there !

So....after some time we concluded that there was only one solution: The backbox had to be removed. Easy enough to say but if you've ever seen all the wiring going between the main- and the backbox you know what this means: removing LOADS and LOADS of connectors.

While I was looking what the best way to do this I found that the former owners probably had the same conclusion because there were a number of connectors already disconnected in the mainbox. However, one wire set cannot be disconnected there so I had to do it in the backbox. (The good news of course was that this meant it probably didn't work because of those loose connectors !!!)

Dind't have time/means to mark everything. I didn't want to postpone either because I had the van borrowed that night.
So, I removed all the connectors from the backbox. Then we removed the backbox.

This all went without problem.
So it was time to lift the mainbox up the extremely narrow stairs that also had a turn near the top !

Step by step, myself under the box, my friend guiding it upstairs we lifted it up in almost complete vertical position.
It took about 15 minutes to come up there, but we managed it !

However, time had passed quickly and I didn't want to have it in my gameroom like this so I decided to put it in Erik's storage for a little while.

I also forgot to bring my camera and even my phone so I am sorry to have to say I have 0 pictures....

Anyway, the playfield looks very good indeed. It looks everything is complete. The cover of the right sling has a small break. The artwork all around is undamaged. Not sure if it is discolored, was hard to see with the available light but it can't be much. The coin door shows very little wear.
I have the feeling that this machine has not been in operational service for long. The seller didn't know how long the former owners used to have it though.

Anyway, now I am left with an electronic puzzle: re-connect all those connectors ! regretfully there was no service manual with the machine, but I can of course download it, but I will probably buy an original one.
BUT, the good thing is that the guy who built my gameroom actually also owns a Judge Dredd !!! Soooooo, I can take lots of pictures, or maybe I can even put my machine next to his to wire it all up !! :D

No time this weekend though :(

I'm glad that you used the storage. We almost met yetserday evening because I wanted to visit the storage also. But I was so tired that I drove home right away.

Congrats with the pinball by the way. I have never played this table, so I'm anxious to try it out when you have completed it.  :)

Heya, I went by the storage today and took some pics !

Stupidly enough I had forgotten the key so I couldn't remove the topglass to make good pics of the playfield but this will have to do for now.

I think it will clean up VERY nicely.

The topper has a crack regretfully but it is not too visible. Also the top of the crane is broken. And the right sling-shot cover has a small part broken off too. I think everything else is OK and there.
The batteries had a "best before 2009" marking, so I guess they weren't replaced that long ago (3/4 years ?). Very happy that there is NO battery leaks this time !

didn't you want to get rid of those pinballs, andré? ;)

anyway, since i don't like pinballs at all, i don't know if it's a great catch, but because you chose to go for it, i'm sure there must be something good about it. enjoy your latest addition!!!

Well I sold the Getaway of course and you know that my son and wife want a pin. That's family life my friend, you're not alone to call the shots :)
But I love to play pinball too though. And I hope that this machine will be running a big quicker than the Getaway that I sold...
As it was, the Getaway was last in line to be worked on, so I hope that just by connecting all the connectors I will have this one up and running quickly.

Well Robin and I went to pick up some stuff from Eriks' temporary storage. Robin picked up his Vega and I brought home the Judge.

So......as you may remember I had to remove all the connectors (well almost all) to separate the back box from the main body and so, there was a sweet job waiting for me....reconnecting everything and if possible, the right plugs on the right connectors  ;D ;D ;D

I didn't have time to mark any of them but I figured that with the keying and the color codes and the schematics I would get back the puzzle:

Oh, there were no leg-bolts with the machine so I couldn't set it "on it's feet" ! No clue where they went, but I hope to pick some up tomorrow.

First I fixed the backbox. The left pivot and bolt are gone too. Also ordered that. There's a temporary bolt in there now...

Moved all the wiring through the hole of the back box:

Already installed a couple here. I printed out the pages of all the PCB's in the backbox and went through each connector, checking them off on the paper once I found the correct one and connected it.

Well......it took quite some time but it worked out just fine. I also used the open back-box picture IPDB.org as a reference which was nice to have some "proof" besides the drawings.

Soooo I pulled up the playfield to reconnect the 2 or 3 connectors I had disconnected before (actually the guy before me had already done so) only to discover that there were quite a number of other connectors loose there !

So more puzzling but I found most of them. I think I still have a couple (3 or 4) loose at this moment, but I wanted to give it a try....and......

Wahoo, it works !!!!

Of course there are some issues (crane not picking up balls (expected, it looks bent or something), Escape button in coin door doesn't work, I get 2 balls launched when I start a game and the right-top flipper is having some troubles, but in general the machine was playable as soon as I installed some fresh batteries !

The dead-world works fine and most other stuff and lights work fine !  Dot-matrix 100% too ! :)

I've already located a new cover for the crane (which is broken) and I'll need some other small parts.

But a very very good start, I'm happy I bought it !

Of course there are some issues ...I get 2 balls launched when I start a game...

If I remember well, it's 'normal' when you select the super game mode  ;)

See

The player is greeted politely by Annita Mann at the start of a Super Game, and is told that they have the Drain Shield active for 10 seconds. The machine waits for a ball to be launched, and then launches a second one.

Yeah, but it happens in "normal" mode. I'm not entirely sure if I have the 6 required balls in there are maybe only 5....

Great work today André, this kind of puzzle is much more fun than a Ravensburger one, isn't it.
Title: Re: Another HUGE road-trip ahead....but o-so-sweet :)
Post by: level42 on November 07, 2010, 11:27:09 PM
I hate Ravensburger Puzzles (or any other). No offense but only people who REALLY don't know what to do with their time do that IMHO :P

Since I was in Zeeland yesterday for the youth marching band, I drove a bit further afterwards to pick up some parts from Carl.

Funny thing is that I know Carl from the various Belgian fairs and pinball meetings but didn't buy anything from him up to now....

He's a very nice guy. Bought a complete new rubber kit, leg bolts, and of course a NOS crane cover from him. Also a 110 V ballast for the Ms.Pac TL lighting (finally found "locally", and for a good price).

I'll need more from him very soon though....the righ lower flipper stopped working and there's something that broke there and I need an original spacer for the crane cover too (they "modded" it a bit....)

Anyway, now it's SW cockpit focus 100% so I can move the pin to the gameroom ASAP....

Post by: level42 on November 21, 2010, 08:55:53 PM
Well....I did do some more work on the JD.

The thing is, this one is "ready to be worked on" right in the living room, where it's nice and warm.....

So: I investigated the crane. Turned out quite simply that the magnet was not working because of the connectors not being hooked up. Fixed that and it worked right away !!
I received the extra parts from Carl (of course, when I expect a "letter" the post strikes here for the first time since 1983.......) so I could now fix the NOS crane cover with exactly the right spacer/mounting thingy. Looks pretty cool !

Next I rebuilt the right top-most flipper that wasn't working (actually, I moved the working plunger to the lower right flipper so I could have at least some decent play on it). However, despite new spring, new sleeve, new plunger with link it's still not working....maybe the coil is damaged...will need to measure that....

I had also fixed the Escape button inside the coin door. It's very nasty to not have it work when you want to go through the menu's in set-up.
It turned out that the switch was defective, not making contact at all. Pretty rare that this happens ! Luckily it's a double-pole switch so I could use the other contact, which was still working. Had to do a little soldering but than it worked great.

Next, most irritating was the ball-trough not working (that is where the balls are "caught" and "stored" until being launched again. It turned out that one of the LED's was sometimes working, sometimes not. This caused the machine to be confused wether or not if there was still a ball on the playfield etc. etc.
Anyway, the PCB's are mounted directly on the trough on these machines and the mechanical stress (the balls dropping into it etc.) makes the solderings crack-up in the end.

So I re soldered the LED and the resistors and since then it works perfectly !

Now the only real problem still is the one flipper.

Further I need to do cleaning and replacing the essential parts on all the flippers. And of course replace lots of lamps :)
