Yes people, I am seriously considering going the "easy" route and order decals for the sides and kick plate.
Of course, I would prefer to stencil, but there are SO many things against it.....
- time
- no room to paint
- money
- tools
- more time
- and the unbelievable complexity of the Ms. Pac stencils...
So compare this to decals:
- quick
- doesn't require a special painting room
- still pretty expensive but less risk
- no special painting tools required
- less time
- pretty easy to apply
Also, we all know that the last Ms. Pac that were built actually originally had decals too. So it's not a _total_ "against original" idea....
Mind you, I'm not talking about Two Bits stuff here....
So, let the fight begin....try to convince me the other way..... :D
-
as you might remember, when i screwed up my pac-man stencils, i was seriously considering slapping on decals - for all the reasons andré listed. but as andré pointed out not the crappy two bits stuff, but i was told that arcadeshop carries a pretty good pac-man decal version. however, although the late pacs had decals as well, i simply couldn't get myself to going through with this. so i sat down, took a brush and corrected the stencil disaster by hand. in the end, it turned out fabulous - it really did (wait for the final pics). and believe me: every single time i walk into the room where the pac-man is right now, i take a couple of moments to look at the sideart thinking "I DID THIS!!!" and it somehow makes me proud. not that those decals would look bad, i've seen the pics on klov (in fact: the machines look great), it's just that feeling of accomplishment. and this has not necessarily to do with originality, because sometimes i leave that path to improve on the original (at least that's what i think ;)), this has to do with what looks better and what makes me feel better.
fortunately, i have finally been able to find a roller which produces REALLY SMOOTH surfaces and i will try that on my next stencil job, which is probably going to be jungle king. picked up some stencilling tips from phetishboy as well which leaves be pretty confident that it's going to work. of course, having a nice airbrush gun with compressor is the ultimate goal, but (a) this costs a lot of money and (b) i have no idea which one to buy, so i'll try rolling on the paint the next time.
regarding the ms pac: stencilling is the only way to go for me, but i can totally understand your points, andré, the most important one probably being the room issue. however, scr33n has proven multiple times that a job like that can easily be done in the living room. why not try it on the toilet :D. if i were you, i'd buy some rollers and do some testing to see if you can do this. i still have a couple of spare stencils lying around, so when you're coming over, take some of them with you and try it out. in the end, there's nothing more fulfilling than an accomplished stencilling task!
:spaceace: GO STENCILS :spaceace:
-
oh - and there's one thing i forgot:
applying those huuuge decals can be a PITA as well, it's always a matter of perspective
-
Mmmm, you do a good job ad convincing me Ully....
Indeed the rolling is an option. What I just thought about is that I still have to do the Joust !
As you may know (;)) I already have those stencils....but I have to say they scare me....
Well maybe after our technical weekend, we can have another weekend some time later called "stencil weekend" ? ;D
-
Even If I went to decals of my Pac Man few years ago, I would go for stencils now.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with the current decals (even if it's not 100% accurate blablalba...) , but at the time, it was the only option to go.
The choice is yours... waiting for doing the perfect job may have a serious impact of on delay regarding all your other restorations to go.
Sometime, it's good to be a little bit 'lazy' and select the easiest option... or then you may give up or you may lost some motivation (it's the case for me sometime, when I see my long list of cabinets around me, waiting to be restored...).
For my Ms Pac Man, I won't need to use stencils to repaint everything, but I would need them for specifics areas, or curves to paint... so, I'm up to buy your stencils set if yon don't plan to use it at the end ;)
...ah... and ... at the end, finally no one can see the side arts on cabinets, because all our cabs are so close together... and they can't be seen anymore... it's a shame, isn't it? :P
-
Well maybe after our technical weekend, we can have another weekend some time later called "stencil weekend" ? ;D
sure thing, andré! if you want to i can get some of those ultraflat rollers for you. they are more expensive than the regular ones though (if i remember correctly a set of 2 costs around 7 euros), but they are well worth the asking price! you can get them cheaper on the internet, but add the postage and the price is the same!
-
Hmmm...
I still have the JoyMonkey Ms. Pacman stencils. They are the vinyl single-use stencils. I never got to a point where I could apply them - still too intimidated to do it. Is the Euro still strong against the Dollar? I could be convinced to sell them. I paid $180 US for them.
-
Sounds interesting Wunder....
Still, look at this, very nice IMHO (ignore the blue T-molding):
I'd thought that decals would look much more shiny, but this seems to resemble the matt appearance of the original very well....
-
Agreed, that's exactly what I plan to do if I don't use these stencils.
-
I saw the pictures on Klov yesterday. They also amaze me, , much better then the 2 bit ones.
-

Do you have the link of the post on KLOV board, I would like to see how it looks like?
Now I'm thinking about a cabinet I've seen 2 years ago in LA (Hollywood Bvd...almost on the street!)... with a sticker on the the side art :
OK, this picture doesn't show you the quality (..and don't pay attention to the ugly conversion of course :ghost:), but I as far as I remember, it was looking not too bad.
By the way, I didn't know the last run of Ms Pac Man was build with stickers/decals? There is a story behind this?
-
Yes it's true, let me see if I can find the story. Someone found a NIB or NOS cab IIRC.
Bruno that picture is like a bad horror movie !!!!! YIKES !
The pictures mentioned are the one's I copied here but here's the KLOV thread I put up:
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=139586
I found some pics of a stencilled cab: http://picasaweb.google.com/Talon.K/MsPacMan?feat=directlink#
Here's one of those pics:
Yes this is stenciled ! But it looks a hell lot more shiny than the original finish AND even much more shiny than the decals......
I don't like this look because the original was MATT looking not shiny. I guess the guy either used the wrong (shiny) paint or finished it with some shiny clear coat(s).....
Look at this, it's like a mirror !!!!
-
Wolfinator (over on KLOV) said those stickers have the NAMCO copyright instead of the original Midway copyright. That rules them out for me, unfortunately.
-

Indeed, very ugly. But it's a though call, stenceling or stickering. I didn't make a final decision yet also for my Ms. pac-man (and pac-man) cab. Perhaps I will first try stenceling, and if that doesn't work out I always can go the decal route (but sure not shiny ones).
-
Well, I made up my mind......decals it's going to be. Feel free to condemn me at will :)
Anybody want to jump in to share shipping costs ? (Or maybe get a discount for ordering more stuff in one go) ;)
-
Well that depence where your ordering. I still need to order all my DK art work...or is this just Ms.Pac stuff only?
-
Anybody want to jump in to share shipping costs ? (Or maybe get a discount for ordering more stuff in one go) ;)
i do! i'll let you know asap what i need ...
-
Please hold on, I have to make up my mind, I'll let you know on monday.
-
Well Darin is on vacation until july 5, so i will fix that date as my order date (he says anything ordered in his vacation will be shipped july 6th).
-
Great!
-
I might jump in. I don't think that we will save a lot on shipping costs, but maybe we can get a quantum discount ;D
I will let you know 5th of July at the latest.
-
+ 1 for me for a set of Ms. Pac Man
-
OK guys, when /if you got your mind made up I need the following info:
Do you want (for Ms.Pac Man):
A) Ms.Pac Full set of cabinet artwork (sides + kick-plate)
B) Ms.Pac CPO
C) Ms.Pac Marquee
If you want anything else, specify.
(I wish I had the funds for the Getaway decals !!!)
My order will be A+B.
-
My order : C only (Ms.Pac Marquee).
Thanks André :-*
-
I still can't decide whether to go for stencisl or decals, so I won't order a decal set (yet). However, I do want to order the following parts:
- Ms. Pac-Man CPO
- Galaga Side Art Set and Kickplate Decal Set
- Galaga CPO
Thanks André
-
OK......I actually also will be ordering a DK side-art set..... :D
-
i would like to order EXACTLY what erik has ordered: 8)
- Ms. Pac-Man CPO
- Galaga Side Art Set and Kickplate Decal Set
- Galaga CPO
thx a lot, andré! we should be getting a nice discount from darin. btw, have you decided to jump on board the paul 50s deal or are you converting your mario bros back to dk?
-
I have to let this one go, I'll order the ms pac man decals later with some other stuff I'll need for my nintendo.
Good luck with the order, I hope you guys will get a nice deal!
-
WOW! Darin's Ms Pac. sideart stickers are $200 US? Yikes, that is more than stencils!
Hopefully, if Darin receives enough suggestions, he can change the side art copyright from Namco 1982 to Midway 1981 to match the awesome Ms. Pac CPO he has reproduced. Until then, I'd hate to use the side art decals with the Namco 1982, that error would bother me too much to pay 200 dollars for. Wouldn't it be easy to fix that art file, just change the letters and numbers? That actual artwork looks really good.

i've seen that as well - 200 bucks for those decals is really a lot.

I emailed Darin about the copyright issue, he told me he will probably change is it the future but he has still a very large stock which has to go first.

Yeah, but you don't need paint, and far less hours. Financial wise decals are the cheapest of the two, but not original. That's why I still haven't decided yet which way to go.
@Wundercade, could you PM me too?

Yeah that's what I figured, but that's also why I want a price-cut :)
Indeed decals are way cheaper because (specially mixed) good quality paint is expensive, plus think about rollers or spraying equipment.

Did you guys see this Pac Man stencil painting solution over on KLOV? It turned out great and no compressor was needed. I may try this. Make sure to read scroll down that thread to see his fantastic stencil results:

i've been trying to find something like this in germany about a year ago when i saw a guy's wild western resto on klov:
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=34995&highlight=taito+wild+western (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=34995&highlight=taito+wild+western)
this is the item that he used and i have to say: the results look stunning! http://store.fastcommerce.com/PaintProsUSA/prod-ff80808117344aab01175583b66e6c0d.html (http://store.fastcommerce.com/PaintProsUSA/prod-ff80808117344aab01175583b66e6c0d.html)
as i've already said: i TRIED to find something like that, but failed, because i didn't know (and still don't) what the generic term for something like that is (neither in german nor in english)! perhaps i should resume my search ...

amazon.com ships internationally:
http://www.amazon.com/PRECISION-VALVE-CORP-Paint-Sprayer/dp/B000TRL9PY
so does this supplier of the spra-tool:
http://www.worldpaintsupply.com/products/Aervoe-Crown-Spra%252dTool-Kit.html
-
i don't think that american shops would send something like the spray tool over here because of the explosvie character of that stuff. i've once asked a shop in england to send a spray can over and they refused to do so for the same reason! >:(
-
Hi,
For me it's A+B :)
Thanks
Franck
-
Fortunately the Euro is getting stronger again. Any update André?
-
Uh....I don't know why but I kinda' dragged this one.....
Let me get everything updated and get back to you guys....
-
OK, another very busy weekend....the good news is that the Euro seems to be back on it's feet and is about 10 cents higher then when I started this thread !!!
Let's sum it up, here is the short list again:
A) Ms.Pac Full set of cabinet artwork (sides + kick-plate)
B) Ms.Pac CPO
C) Ms.Pac Marquee
Level 42: A + B + DK side-art
DarthNuno: C
CKONG: B + Galaga side-art and kickplate set ($70) + Galaga CPO: $40
Ully: B + Galaga side-art and kickplate set ($70) + Galaga CPO: $40
AtariMania: A+B
If anything is summed up here incorrectly please let me know !
A quick calculation of the total (bruto): $853
If anyone still wants something say it NOW (ok within 24h.)
-
To my Berzerk friends: I will add one of those Stern Coin Door decals for my Berzerk. How about you guys ? I don't see the other version happening very soon AND this version was also used on Berzerks so it is still original.
They're 5 bucks a piece (damn !)
-
the good news is that the Euro seems to be back on it's feet and is about 10 cents higher then when I started this thread !!!
let's wait another half a year to make this extremely cheap ;)

Are you Dutch? ;)
no, i learned from you guys ;)
-
Not going to gamble on that....that would make me weight forever...
-
My vote is for stencils (I know...too late) but I don't have a problem with using the decals (other than the Namco logo).
And if you do restorations, there is nothing like the experience of removing a stencil and seeing what is left behind!
-

you NEED to go for stencils, andre! need to, need to, need to :spaceace:

André, you may not need everything any longer ;) but I'm just curious what the status is. Do you already need payments from us? :)
-
Sorry about this. There was just something nagging me about this......and some people actually were nagging me about it ;)
The end of the line is that I decided to go for stencils for the Ms.Pac Man :D
Yes, I know this probably means it's going to take longer to finish it (or maybe even start) but since Erik decided to go this way, I hope I can at least learn from him a bit this time ;)
HOWEVER, I still need the CPO and the DK side-art so, the deal is not called off.
If anyone still wants to add something or delete something please let me know whithin 24 hrs.
If not, I will start the contact and will report back here :)
Sorry for the delay, I am a person who sometimes things long about decisions and is still not sure after taking it ;)
-
So if you go to stencils... me too ;D like that I'll learn from your two experiences :)
Franck
-
Well you'll have to ask CKONG about the stencils...
You still do want the CPO I guess ?
-
The end of the line is that I decided to go for stencils for the Ms.Pac Man :D
perfect choice, andré! all good things come to those who wait ...
-
Yeaahhh, when will you come over for the `learn how to stencil` weekend ?
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Yeaahhh, when will you come over for the `learn how to stencil` weekend ?
wasn't erik's "spray-friend" going to do the stencils? because if he does, i have a cab here as well which i could bring over. if he can't let's roll all our cabs together and have one big stencilling party!
-

I'm sorry, but my spray friend will not do this. I didn't ask him eitherbecause I know that he hasnt got the space for it. So it's up to us. But as I told André a few weeks ago I will first practise a bit before I plunge in the deep.
And although I will have my stencils pretty soon, it might take me months, or even a year before I will use them. But it is always nice to have the needed parts in house. :)
-
Mmmmm, I might have the perfect source for the paint...."De verfkoning" (= the paint king). They have incredible good prices and mix colors too ! And they're pretty close... (between my home and Erik's storage :))
-
So if you go to stencils... me too ;D like that I'll learn from your two experiences :)
Franck
So I will definitely delete the Ms.Pac decal set for you right Franck ?
-
Yes you can. Thanks for your proposal of group buy ;)
-
But you still want the CPO is presume ?
Big disappointment: DK side art is no longer in stock !
Any other resources with the same quality recommended ?
-
NOS..... :D

Mikesarcade.com (http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=SADKONG)

That's almost double the price of Phoenix !
:o
-
This looks like a nicer price to me:
http://www.quarterarcade.com/Game.aspx/1205
O wait, that's not a set but just one side ! Weird... still cheaper though :)
-
That ain't bad though! - but why the DK side art?
-
Because I will convert my Mario Bros/Radar Scope into a DK.
-
I know we a way off topic... but..
ok... what about your MB?? will you sell the marquee-bezel-pcb? or do you plan to buy a nintendo cab from paul50?
-
The idea is to finance the DK stuff by selling the MB stuff.
So, should be marquee (mint), bezel (Nice, some tiny scratches), CP (mamemarquees repro, there is no silk screened CPO for the narrow bodies), PCB.
However, I have a problem with getting rid of the MB PCB....it's so.....working :)
I have a nice but small collection of Nintendo PCB's...
I wish I could get the side-art off safely. However, if needed, the MB side art is now available from Phoenix !!! It's pretty expensive because it uses LOADS of colors...
P.S. I will remove the blue buttons from the MB CP.
-
yep, still off topic...
MB is a good game (even better as a 2 player game..??!!) but tried it at your place a year ago (wow! time flies!!) and it did´nt appeal to me... :( :(
Though, if it had been Dr. Mario, i would have bought it all in a heartbeat!
-
André You should go with the quarterarcade.com repro! It looks really good, and its on 3M transfer and that one of the finest stickers available.

My 'order' remains the same.

same here!

Bruno ?
AtariMania ?
-
My 'order' remains the same.
Same for me André ;)
-
Dropped AtariMania an e-mail....
-
Hi,
Sorry for the delay, too much work during the last weeks for arcade, then I missed this thread :(
So for me :
B (CPO) only, I finally decided to try stencils ;)
+ Tron Side Art
+ Tron CPO with spinner decal
+ Tron Inner Art
Many thanks
Franck
-
euro - dollar = 1,40 today. Time to act? ;)
-
Actually it's 1.41 woohoo !
Indeed and incidentally I e-mailed today :D
-
So, here is the definitive order, please all check your part, if something is wrong please let me know !
1x Stern Coin Door Decal (Level42)
4x Ms.Pac Man CPO (Level42,CKONG,SuperUllly,Atarimania)
2x Ms.Pac Man Marquee (Darthnuno)
2x Galaga Side-art + kick art (CKONG, Superully)
2x Galaga CPO (CKONG, Superully)
1x Tron Side Art (AtariMania)
1x Tron CPO + decal (AtariMania)
1x Tron Inner art (AtariMania)
Now......since I started this I am of course willing to continue this. However, recently I've started to have some doubts about these group-buys when "further away" people are involved. I mean, shipping this stuff forward (esp. your stuff Atarimania) could well be MORE costly then if it would be shipped directly from the US.
There is also the customs issue....although I've never had any problems so far...
Anyway, it is a lot of work, it's no problem to do it, but in all honesty I think it's only beneficial if I can either deliver it to people's door or if they pick it up here....
So.....please let me know if you guys are all still in this deal. As mentioned no problem I will handle it but just think about what I mentioned here...
So let's wait Phoenix' reply first about shipping etc.
-
....... but in all honesty I think it's only beneficial if I can either deliver it to people's door or if they pick it up here....
And that's no problem for me, you can still count me in. But I do share your concern, doing a group buy doesn't mean that it is cheaper by definition. There is indeed the factor of twice 'shipping costs' to some people and custom risk.
Let's hear what the others say.
-
i'm still in!!!
-
Well, I'm just looking for 1x Ms.Pac Man Marquee, I'm not sure If I'll save money because of the double shipping?
Ok, I'll get one by myself I would say, no problem ;)
-
Well, I'm just looking for 1x Ms.Pac Man Marquee, I'm not sure If I'll save money because of the double shipping?

Wait up Bruno....as I said, let's wait Darin's answer....
So...are you still in ? I requested a total according to the last list and it yet still may be interesting after all...
-
OK Bruno is still in and added a STERN coin decal.
Since I made a mistake (2x Ms.Pac Marquee instead of 1x) I had to mail Darin again to correct this so I could also add the 2nd Stern decal.
Now, I prefer not to keep mailing changes to Darin so I've now sent this list as definitive to him. Sorry no changes accepted anymore....

Mmmm, it cleared customs at 14.19 today.....pretty long time to be in customs for our standards.....(often it goes in and straight out, which means unchecked....)
I have a bad feeling about this....
Anyway, I expect delivery tomorrow. My wife MIGHT be at home when they deliver....
-
Fingers crossed.
-
Well...my feeling was right....
Package just arrived 5 minutes ago, had to pay €25.80 tax etc....
Weird because it was indicated as Gift !
They labelled it under the category: "Games with picture screen, operating with coins" Now who on earth would think they still HAVE that category ! ;D ;D
They charged it at €70 customs value so......I guess it's not too bad in the end :)
I'll see how we will share these costs guys...PM's later
-
I'll make some pics later tonight...
-

-
Hi,
Thanks for these pictures. They look great 8) 8)
-
OK let's get that stuff out of my house ! ;)
Ully will pick his stuff up next week
Erik well, we will meet soon anyway ;)
Bruno, guess yours can be stored with the G-loc stuff for pick-up ?
That leaves AtariMania....guess I'll have to ship your share ?
Please PM me your address. Tell me if you want it sent insured (MAY be wise, considering the value and seeing French strikes lately ;)). Of course I will use the original packaging (and some extra).
-
Bruno, guess yours can be stored with the G-loc stuff for pick-up ?
Yes Sir ;) Thanks!
-
I can't believe it.
I really can NOT believe it !!!!
OK, finally I had found a proper (smaller) box AND some time to send the artwork to Atarimania in France.
So. here's the package:
But, looking outside it was like this:
Not scared for a small distance like that, but I figured let's bring it to the local magazine store that also has a TNT post "office' in a fun way (because my son wanted to get out in the snow of course.
It's only 5 minutes or so by foot.
So, I wrapped it in some plastic to protect it from the snow and....here we go !
We safely and quickly arrived at the "office" (in Holland we do not have REAL post-offices anymore, believe it or not, only all kind of "post points" in supermarkets, magazine/cigarette shops etc.). After waiting for at least 10 minutes in the queue (because there is only 1 person working there), I hand over the package and say I would like to send this please.
She looks like I just gave her a pile of shit and seems to be completely puzzled. Then she mentions that this is out of spec-sized !!!
"Beg your pardon ?"
A LARGER box was shipped to me through USPS AND TNT in Holland to get this stuff in the first place so WTF you mean it is over sized ???
She's thumbing through all kinds of papers, looking in drawers, looking everywhere but cannot find the info if this is suitable to be shipped by them.
She says she had tried before but that she got back the package. I say that I want it to arrive in France and nowhere else. (I start getting pretty pissed off at this point).
For the 2nd time I explain that an even LONGER box was shipped to me BY TNT from Schiphol to my home so WHY would it not fit in a TNT van now ??? (People in the queue behind me start laughing)
I get back the usual "government speech".
She then says, OK I will try to ship it.
I say, I do not want you to TRY, I want it to ARRIVE AT THE DESTINATION THAT I PAY FOR !
Next I mention that in the past we had decend post-offices that knew about their work.
She mentions she used to work there. (EVEN WORSE !).
I've had it. I take back the package and "thank" her for help and say I will go to the business desk that is also close to my home. Regretfully this is only open on working days.
So, that meant my son had to carry the package back home on the sledge.
So I'm so sorry Atarimania, some more delay but I think I did my best !
I get home, look up the TNT site and find within 1 minute that it can easily be shipped (up to 150 cm. length) with International Packet plus.
I can NOT believe it ! What a MORON !
-
Hi,
Many many many thanks for all your efforts Andre and The "RoadTrip" for me :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Typical "TNT Biatch" ;)
I know the feeling, jou just want to send something, and like you say to arrive in the destination that you pay for
i had to send a printer for garanty once, and the dude says it was too heavy (a old A3 laserprinter) so i go to the other queue, package still in the front, other dude just asked me to put the box in the trolly and sends the package ???
very strange way of handling if you ask me
the package arrived, and i got it repaired back, also returned by TNT :D
Better like you say go to the business desk
-
Today is a glorious day !
AtariMania's stuff is FINALLY on it's way !!!!!
I happened to have to work at a mall today and I knew they had a TNT post "office" there.
This time someone who first measured the length, then looked through her info and said: ok, because of the lenght it has to be shipped [insert catchy marketing-guy-thought-up name here]. I said: sure.
She said but it will be over 13 Euro. I said, well that's cheaper than bringing it :)
She laughed and said it was also insured this way. I said that that was very welcome indeed.
So...Paris area, can't really take that long Franck....I'll PM you the tracking nr. but she said it could only be tracked "until the Dutch border".....but anyway....
Sorry for all the delay, I know it is surely worth the waiting !!!
-
Many many thanks for all your efforts :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
Don't hesitate to come to see the stickers on the games if you are near Paris, you'll be welcomed :) :) :) :) :)
-
Franck, please tell me the stuff arrived at your place !?!?
-
Hi,
I'm on vacation until monday. Because of the snow there are a lot problems (delay) with the post in France . I'll tell you next Monday ;)
-
Got it!!!!
Stickers "on" the cabinet:
Next steps:
- remove the stickers
- paint the sides
- apply the new stickers
Many thanks Andre ;)
-
And ?? How did it turn out ? ;)
-
Well...my feeling was right....
Package just arrived 5 minutes ago, had to pay €25.80 tax etc....
Weird because it was indicated as Gift !
They labelled it under the category: "Games with picture screen, operating with coins" Now who on earth would think they still HAVE that category ! ;D ;D

I'll see how we will share these costs guys...PM's later
Geez, guys, help me remember, did you guys ever pay your share in the tax costs ?
-
Can't remember, but I didn't find a PM from you in my inbox with regard to this. So better safe than sorry and charge us! :)
-
Hey guys, I sent you guys 2 PMs.
In the first one I calculated with the wrong value so please ignore that !
The second is the correct amount....
Thanks and sorry !
-
no problem at all. does that mean we're even or can you start planning a huge "those guys still owe me taxes party"? :P
EDIT: i just realized that you've sent as messages, i thought you were referring to some old emails ...
-
Big thumbs up to Atarimania for actually paying his share in the taxes..............already a long time ago, but I forgot to mention it here.....
-
Another big thumbs up to CKONG for actually paying his share in the taxes........ 3 down....1 to go !
-
Another big thumbs up to Superully for actually paying his share in the taxes........ all done !! ;)
And by the way......this story will get a surprising twist soon....... :P
-
Another big thumbs up to Superully for actually paying his share in the taxes........ all done !! ;)
actually?
-
Yup :)
Just like DarthNuno,AtariMania and CKONG :P
-
And so.....my turn to the Dark Side has completed.
I have sold the stencils to one who has The Force to do stencils, even the most complicated one's.....
And in return, I have returned to my original plan to use the Dark Side:
Today I picked this up from the mail (after paying a whopping €57,34 of import costs and taxes (Sadly it was valued at 300 bucks....without shipping costs) on the form. :(
O well, everything for the Ms. !!!
It looks much sweater in real life. It _is_ a bit more shiny than I had expected though.
Yes, you guys can all burn me, but I simply thought I would still have those stencils in the box over 10 years...and THIS is a project that I think I _can_ install....
There was also another item in the box:
I figured....once I bought Jrok's FCPGA and a couple of weeks later I had a Joust cab....maybe this will work again ?!? ;)
-
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum2/palpatine-good.jpg)
If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Darth Nuno.
... Is the dark side stronger?
No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.
;D ;D ;D ;)
-
damn, almost 60 bucks import taxes - that sucks big time. honestly, i still can't understand why we have to pay taxes on stuff like that at all. can someone explain this to me, please?
good luck with those decals, attaching huge vinyl like that isn't a walk in the park either, but much easier and of course less time-consuming than stencils. i wonder who bough those ... 8)
-
damn, almost 60 bucks import taxes - that sucks big time. honestly, i still can't understand why we have to pay taxes on stuff like that at all. can someone explain this to me, please?
Sure: we have to pay for countries like Greece and Portugal who don't know how to manage their finances....and so they borrowed loads of money from our banks and because these MULTI-BILLION EURO earning machines are now at risk, we have to pay.
Actually I din't have to pay import duties but VAT (Value Added Tax). That is 19%. The customs set the value at €236 so over that I pay 19% = 44,84 Added to that is 12,50 costs of the declaration or whatever it's called....
Bottom line is that this could have been a lot lower or even 0 with the right "precautions". But I was sleepy too this time...
O well, let's focus on the positive stuff !
-
Well since it's perfect weather today I started sanding my Ms.Pac. Now, since I will be using DECALS I wondered: do I have to make the sides completely blank (so sand it until all old paint is gone) ?
Or can I leave some original artwork and will the decals cover this ?
Thanks...
-
I dont think so, i think if all the bumps and dents are out, and you got a smooth straight surface you will be fine.
i dont think that the decals shine through..
maybe a coat of primer after you finish, to be sure it will cover the old surface
-
as long as the surface is totally flat, i'd say you're good to go. if course a coat of primer or paint never hurts ...
-
wasn't it scary to do? And do you have pictures?
-
Yes, pics would be great, would love to see. :)
I'm also going to sand down a Ms Pac-Man and put decals. Somehow do not feel ready yet experimenting with stencils. How's it coming along?
-
Of course I have pics but didn't have time to post them yesterday (see Eurocade and Survey threads ;))
But here we go:
Well I plugged her in one more time before disassembly. The issue that started at Eurocade is still there, the game runs fine, but the background is totally messed up. Tried reseating the extra boards, pushing down on all socketed chips but no go. Looks like something really died...but we'll see about that later.
Also checked +5V and it's 4.95V, should be still OK I guess...
Anyway...here she is just before her cosmetic surgery:
If I think about all those brutes that dared to put a burning cigarette on top of the Ms......!
Mmmmmmm. another sticker to repro: Country of origin :P
(http://gallery.me.com/andre.huijts/100723/DSCF7414/web.jpg?ver=13175924770001)
Serial nr. confirmed. Pretty low number for a 100000 run..... ;)

She looks nice from a distance at this age....but it does show. All the acid from human hands playing her have evaporated the paint.
-
Removed the grips on the back. Here it shows how the blue has faded (although the pink faded much more):
You can see that the covered part was darker, more blue. The rest is going to aqua....
And than....after carefully laying down the Ms. and applying the correct anesthetics, work begins.
First I remove the old T-molding on both sides and then....
May the arcade gods forgive me !!!
And the result after some first sanding. I found AMAZINGLY few dents/holes on the sides, maybe one or two. The bottoms and corners there will require some bondo too though. Hooray for HollPlywood !!!
Actually I had very little feelings when starting the sanding because I _KNOW_ it will be for the better in the end :)
Now, I need to apply some bondo here and there (my favorite job, not) then sand some more.
Since I will have to have mixed up the blue paint anyway, I will use that on the sides too before applying the decals. This should give a good base for them to stick too. Blank wood or only primer is not suggested. (Esp. primer is obvious) because it won't e a good base for the decals...
Also, even the smallest tin will have enough paint to do this...
-

good idea with the blue paint as a base. fortunately, plywood is so much easier to work with than particle wood, so this should be a walk in the park 8). good luck, andré, do you think you will be able to dinish the job this year?
-
Great pics. Your bezel actually looks great for it's age! Nice one.
And another great point, your sander actually held longer than 15 minutes.
-
I think I can actually do this pretty fast. The main thing is, will we get some good weather as I don't want to sand inside the game room.
Weather forecast is not looking good though...
I'm definitely going to need a hand when applying the side-arts (Etienne ? ;))
The bezel is pretty nice indeed, don't think I'm going to replace that.
I still need:
- new power switch. It's not working anymore unless I keep the button ALL the way down. I don't like the kind of switches Midway used for these cabs anyway, they don't feel comfortable to use. Thinking about using a rocker-switch instead. It's not very important for me anyway because I normally use the central switches. Until now I had bridged the wires to get it working.
- leathered T-molding
- new Midway Kickplate rubber
My sander ? Got it from my dad (who often buys tools he rarely uses ;)) It's a Black & Decker so not the best of quality but it works fine until now. I like the eccentric sanders.
But I definitely did not need 15 minutes per side. A side took about 5 minutes I guess. Used a course disc. Will bodo the holes and edges and than sand with a finer grid. Than it's perfectly smooth I'm sure.
-
I'm definitely going to need a hand when applying the side-arts (Etienne ? ;))
Apply the side arts "wet" .. so they can moved and applied "bubble-free" ...
After drying they fit perfectly !
-
I'm definitely going to need a hand when applying the side-arts (Etienne ? ;))
Looking good so so far
Let me know when you want to apply them, i'll be there ;)
Will be a perfect training course for my CK decals when i finish vectoring them and have them printed..

Neaahhhh, as mentioned elsewhere I don't like wet. Well not when applying artwork.
Too messy for me plus I don't like the idea of water "behind" the decal. So far all my artwork is bubble free without the wet method but I immediately admit that I never did a complete side-art decal.

Some usual parts cleaning etc.:
I'm always surprised how well these very lightweight speakers sound once they're in the cab...
The speaker grill is going to be replaced because it has some rust bubbles. I could try sand and repaint it but for 8 bucks I'll simply order a brand new one from AS (I'll have to order more stuff from them anyway).
And here's another part I need from AS. The kick plate strip:
Luckely I already completely rebuilt the marquee lighting. New tube, new starter (both Philips of course), new ballast:
AAAaaaaandddd....I had the blue paint mixed up for me today. It wasn't scanned but we color matched it to a sample.
For those interested it is Sigma color nr. 3060-B.
Here you can see it and comparable samples from other brands: http://www.color-swatches.com/sigma/s-3060-b/swatch.html
(http://gallery.me.com/andre.huijts/100723/DSCF7439/web.jpg?ver=13178476830001)
I think it looks as close as you can possibly get...although the paint is not entirely dry yet.
-
Just checked this page with common (Ms.)Pac Man problems http://www.arcadegameover.com/pactrouble.html and I found this to be just like mine:
And the description is the same too:
Graphics are blocks. Characters are ok.
5E Bad or removed.
Well, 5E is sure still in there. Removed it and gave the pins a good "scrub". Can't test now though...If it won't work I guess it's replacing socket and maybe the Eprom. The game runs fine, it's just the background graphics being bad.
-
Last Thursday it was FINALLY some nice weather I had some time to work on the Ms. I filled up the (quite few) bad spots with polyester putty (=Bondo). The most spots were chips on the lowest parts on the sides and corners and I must say that I feel I got the hang of "Bondo-ing" now. Sanded all of them and did a final round of sanding all over.
Have to get it dust free ( but best to do that just for the paint-job) and then it is ready for the paint job but I was out of primer.... :(
Weather forecasts are good for next week and hope to start painting soon !
-
Goodluck !
-
Goodluck !
And have fun.
-
what about these decals, seems pretty cheap?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ms-Ms-Pac-Man-Pacman-Arcade-Game-Side-Art-Sideart-both-sides-Kick-WeekendSALE-/121063993104?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c2ff9ef10
-
My philosophy is that I'd rather spend a bit more and get a known good product which I won't regret later.
My decal set comes from Phoenixarcade.com and there is no doubt about the quality.
It is scheduled to be installed in early spring 2013 ;D ;D
-
yeah, i agree with that, the phoenix stuff is always excellent....
-
It is a $80 price difference. And the Euro has risen back quite a bit lately, so that's only about 60 Euro's at this moment (excl. any shipping costs).
For those 60 Euro's, I'd definitely go Phoenix...
