I love teasers. ;D
André, have a nice and safe trip and a nice weekend.

I HATE TEASERS!! ;)

Heheheh, well it's no big secret, if you read around this forum.

-
argh, andre's coming over - i almost forgot ;)
-
ah ofcourse, "wrong way round"...... you are delivering (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1112.0) stuff to ully, how can we forget 8)
-
You got it ! ;D
A roadtrip should be about GETTING a cab, but this time I'm actually BRINGING one ! :'(
Not really :'( because it's Ully's and I'm actually pretty glad it's leaving because it's crowding my gameroom ;D
Also, I _will_ be bringing something back. Something very nice, very needed and very longed for.......but later about that....
-
So it will still be a little bit good-way-roadtrip ;D
-
OK, everything is prepared ( I think ):
It's great to have a company car. It really is. Because else I would think twice before going on a road-trip like this (petrol costs). But I HATE it that I need to drag all this stuff around for my work every day. It means I always have to get everything out whenever I move a cab....
The result (plus the fact that I knew I had to drag it out again today) is that I tend to make a mess of it.....seriously:
A REAL mess this time !
So...what's the best way to move this stuff out:
Well, let's have a look at our "victim" today:
I had drilled out the lock of the machine. I suggested to try the game and Ully said OK. Regretfully there was no mains plug and I didn't have one around. Also, it's very cold in my gameroom now (but not humid at all). I thought it would be better to try it at it's final destination.
But I did take some pics. It looks REALLY good inside. Actually amazing IMHO. Remember it's from 1976 ! It's only 9 years younger than me...damned I wish I still looked that good ! :D
I always love these:
Holy shit look at that B/W monitor ! It doesn't even look dusty (a pre of a monitor that hangs) !
"Look ma, no processor !" :D Unbelievable, is this NEW ?!?!?
-
It's great to have a company car. It really is.
your company car and the tidyness / organisation inside is amazing ;)
But I did take some pics. It looks REALLY good inside. Actually amazing IMHO.
WOW :o this looks as good on the inside as the cabinet does on the outside! can't wait to have it over and see what happens. thx so much for bringing this baby home! :-*
have a safe trip, andré. see you tomorrow!!! :spaceace:
-
Oh man, I'm almost getting to the point that I don't want to move it out ;D
But it's time to pack up and go:
IMHO Ully scored BIG with this one. I remember clearly how he was climbing over cabs, sorting them, examining and finally picking this one. He was _so_ right. For a machine that has lived in the field, this is about as nice as it can get for a 34 year old machine. Don't look at the dust. When cleaned, painted (coin door), new vinyl etc. it will look like NEW !
Just look at those sides. No scratches. Only some small spots here and there. Will clean up lovely.
So the car is empty. Looks better ! I love the Skoda, it's a great car.
But there are 2 things I hate about it. One is the big edge around the bottom. Competitors have a entirely flat loading floor. I don't know why Volkswagen (the mother-concern of Skoda) keeps doing it like this. Maybe it's a stronger construction for rear impacts ? Anyway, it's terrible when loading cabs....
But once you get over that hurdle, there is the second thing I hate: The floor is not entirely flat when you throw down the backseat. Yes I did remove the seat itself so this is just the backs flipped forward.... This makes it necessary to lift it over this edge too.....luckily the Breakout is a light-weight cab....
OK some last shots:
No, let's give that a 1976 look:
In she goes, always a good moment to check out the underside. It looks lovely. The cab is ply-wood all over and it shows !! Sturdy !!!
It will fit easily. Breakout is like most other early (B/W) Atari machines not that big.
And in she is. Sleep tight beauty, tomorrow will be a long trip !
Some items for the trip (more to get):
An Ancient German road-map. I still always take a map with me. I'm too old to 100% rely on the navigation. The map is so ancient, there's a mobile phone the size of a small fridge advertised on the back-side ! But I guess the main roads are still the same.....
Also: Released TODAY and I actually went to a CD store to get it: The first album of Holland's best new talent: Caro Emerald. (Check her out at www.caroemerald.com). This is going to get a shit-load of plays during the trip.....I love her and already bought tickets for a gig in April !
So, when I looked outside I see......o no !
O well, screw it. Nothing's gonna stop me now ! Snow-tyres are installed but I hope it will not be too bad tomorrow.......:S
-
I bet ully can't wait till you get there! ;D - and it is a nice looking cab, and i also remember him changing out the bezel... ;)
Great pic! - would have been even greater if you had had the time to move it into the street light, so thet the cab would have been even more iluminated...

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
CANCELLED !
DAMNIT I HATE SNOW (unless I'm skiing of course).
I actually was on the road for about 25 minutes but things are too bad to go on. There was snow falling, which is bad enough but I can handle that. But then snow turned into rain and with a temperature of -0.5 degrees that's something I _really_ don't like. So there was a battle between reason and will and reason won. Nothing justifies risking the safety. I'm a really experienced driver and not easily scared of road conditions. But this was no fun I tell you. Even if there wan'st the risk, there is also the fact that traffic wasn't moving any faster then 60-80 km/h. This would make the trip about 2 times as long to complete, which is not what I desire since we actually want to spend some good time together in the short weekend it already is.
So, Ully, I'm sorry that this is at the last moment, but I had to take this decision. Trust me, if there was anyone who wanted to go ahead it was me!
Of course the trip is not cancelled but postponed it is !
I'll upload pics later today....
-
:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
BUT: I ABSOLUTELY BACK YOU DECISION
i've told you in my email from yesterday morning that IF the weather is horrible feel free to cancel because as much as i was looking forward to your visit and as beautiful as the breakout is nothing is worth risking your life on the road or wasting precious time getting over to my place. i've been to the sauna yesterday evening which is about 30 kilometers away when i take the autobahn and the road conditions weren't good at all - mildly put! your decision to cancel was right, there will be better times - and better weather!
the only thing i'm really sorry for is all the time you spent unloading your company car, preparing stuff for the roadtrip and wedging the breakout in. and all that now has to be un-done and re-done later on. poor andré, poor breakout - take care of my baby ;)
no hard feelings, my friend, it was the wise thing to do! enjoy your caro emerald cd nevertheless, she is one hell of a lady :-*
p.s.: thx for all those wonderful roadtrip preparations pictures - i love how you documented the progress!
-
supplement: i didn't have to prepare as much for the weekend as you had to, just a nice cosy place to sleep next to my still-not-fully-repainted defender cabinet along with an original very 70s bedside lamp
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2722/4315638596_c0dd423e91_b.jpg)
-
Too bad >:( But i'm sure you will get another chance soon!
-
I actually went back to bed after posting the cancellation message. Funny: Andreas (Speleo) called me and woke me by doing so. I'm sure he thought I would be in Germany at that moment :D
Ully, that looked like a wonderful sleeping spot....what a view to wake up with ;D
Next time !.....I'm only praying next weekend won't be as bad again.....
The stupid thing is, in my country snow has become rare the latest, let's say 30 years. I remember some good winters from my youth, but after that....no more like that. Of course we had occasional snow, but it was nothing serious.
This year, I think it's the 10th time or so now that snow hits us...it's amazing. I love it for my son though...but why couldn't it snow during the week this time and be dry in the weekend (was the other way around).
Tell you what Ully, to compensate, I will go buy a plug, bring the Breakout into my home and do the first examinations. This may save some time for the next roadtrip. I do not actually have high hopes of it working right away. The cut-off connector is usually there for a reason. But wouldn't it be brilliant if I would plug it in and it would run. Just let us dream for a short moment like that :D
Ully, I know you back my decision, you already pointed me to the forecast a couple of times, but I think I just hoped they would be wrong (as they are now and then).... I just read that in Bruno's area a lot of trucks got stuck in traffic because of 30 cm. of snow !!!
Germany has some area's where it can be "spookey" like that too (Hunsruck !) which I would have to cross.
I do not regret my decision, even though it's actually sunny at the moment here, there is still more snow forecasted even on sunday.
Some pics and video soon....
-

Yes, it's a real nightmare since yesterday here! :ghost:
Wise decision...this is clearly not a road trip week end :'(

the same goes for germany. good memories of A LOT OF SNOW in my youth, but nothing serious over the last 25 years. well, perhaps our memories have just become clouded over the years ;)

that's a fabulous idea, andré! perhaps you could make a short video of the first power-up ... it would be a blast if it worked!
since my weekend was planned for arcade stuff, this is what i'm going to do: i'll go to my favourite paint shop, fetch a huge can of yellow and start painting the pac-man. after that (or in-between), i'll TRY to reassemble the 1 zillion parts of the paperboy controller (in fact i wanted to do that with andré, because i have NO IDEA whether i'll be able to get it back together again alone, this looks COMPLICATED).
stay tuned ...
-
DAMN, what a pity for both you guys. To be honest I was a bit afraid of this to happen, I followed the german weatherforecast in detail the last few days. In fact I just wanted to check the forum to see of André went ahead with it. Well, more luck next time.
I only hope that weather is improving quickly, because this is a bad winter for us guys undertaking road trips. >:( And there still are some serious road trips ahead of us. :)
-
Like we say in Holland: this is mustard after the meal but here we go:
It's time to go says Asteroids !
Survival:

The luggage:

O-Shit !
O well, let's hope the high-way is better....
Mmm...well not really !:

.
-
André, you must have felt terrible. Good music though. :)
-
I did and it's even worse now. The sun has been shining brightly for hours now !
-
did you eat your survival kit in that half hour? I know I would, it looks delicious.
-
as sad as it is that you had to cancel, your pictures and the video are fabulous - that segment where you've filmed the gritters is priceless! good choice on NOT continuing with the journey, must have been a hard decision to stop the roadtrip and return home though. hope the weather is better for your gigantic island hopping next weekend ...
-
did you eat your survival kit in that half hour? I know I would, it looks delicious.
Well only one of the buns with fried egg....the buns are factory one's though, not the one's from our local bakery who makes them himself.
I'm pretty sure there is some weather god who is LOL now because it's been very bright and sunny ever since I got up.
Even so, I read there have been many accidents this morning so I do not regret my decision. And there's more snow in the forecasts...
When was the last time you saw a Breakout out in the snow ?
(I had to put the machine on it's back to remove all the snow once it was inside. Thank god it's ply-wood.)
I'm checking out the machine before I power up and look what I found:
DAMN, the keys !!! :( So I drilled out the original lock for nothing...the bad news doesn't seem to stop today.....
Sorry about that Ully....
O well it can be replaced.
So, after letting it acclimatize for a couple of hours, time to try this baby:
So.....forget about plugs, I manage to put the wires into the mains-outlet in a relatively save way...
Let's see what happens:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWjcGia0rrA&feature=youtube_gdata
-
So, let's adjust the sync a bit and......:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls-IozKeBuo&feature=youtube_gdata
-
Some interesting fact about the lower front: The area where the black vinyl is missing is just that. The plywood still looks good under it. I'm sure it's just a matter of replacing the vinyl (although this looks more like formica). I'm sure with particle board there would have been structural damage.
OK, so what 74LSxxx do I replace to get this baby working ? :D
And the first one who says "re-seat the ROMs" will get a warm laughter ! ;D
-
Try to re-seat the roms first :P ;D
-
Seriously though, since they are all logic you can measure them with a logic probe and maybe find floating in or outputs to start with?
-
wow, andré! this really is more than i would have expected to happen. picture doesn't look too shaky, but a cap kit will probably do the trick. what type of monitor is that?
about the pcb: do you have ANY IDEA how to tackle that baby or should i simply try to get a working pcb? i could ask around the german forums first and then extend my search. just let me know ...
thx for trying this and for making the videos - this way it felt like i was there. the keys inside the coin box fit to the cancelled road trip - some day are just perfect ;). was the coin door unlocked or did you have to drill it open as well? it hurts a little bit to see that old original lock go, but what can we do now. no hard feelings though, i have just received 40 replacement locks from the states ;)
btw, i'm struggling hard with the reassembly of the paperboy controller, could have really used your help 8) THIS IS DIFFICULT!!!
-
The picture shaking is hidden by the size and encoding of YouTube. It's definitely there. Indeed a cap-kit might help. The monitor is a Motorola XM 501/701. Bob Roberts has a kit, but we just ordered from him. Might be worthwile to find a cap-kit list instead.
If you can find a cheap working Breakout PCB it may be worthwile. I can try some basic stuff, but my PCB repair skills are limited and it would take me a lot of time to find it out. Alternatively you can contact Andreas who is a master at PCB repair.
The coindoor was unlocked, the op removed all his lock remember.... ;) (All the same key)
About the re-assembly of the controller: don't overestimate my powers in mechanical stuff ! I seriously look up to the task of re-assembling my SW yoke !
-

i have a cap kit for that monitor right in front of me, i ordered it quite a while ago for my gran trak 10. i'm pretty sure that the GT10 monitor has other issues which i would like to discuss with you when you're here ;)

i'll try a WANTED thread on the german forums first, perhaps some has one lying around. if not, i'll either contact andreas or look for one on klov.
-
RESCHEDULED !
Let's hope we don't have snow in july ! :D
;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I just checked the weather forecast and it looks like there is NO snow predicted this time !!!
Instead, the contrast couldn't be much bigger: it's going to be one HOT weekend !!!!!
And because of the Dutch reaching the finals, I renamed this trip to the "Wrong-way-around" ORANGE roadtrip ! ;D ;D ;D ;D
And it will remain a wrong-way-round trip, because instead of the Breakout (which already reached Ully's place) I will bringing yet another precious cab to it's owner :)
-
Have fun this weekend. I hope that Ully has enough chilled beer, you will probably need it. :)
-
Have a nice trip!
I had something similar with the keys of my Joust: the seller told me he was not able to find out them, but during unloading i heard something metallic hitting the ground... ??
-
have a great trip!!!
-
thx guys! i'm sure we're going to have a great weekend where superluky skywalker will learn some jedi arcade magic from yoda42 ...
the least i could do to thank master yoda42 for his dedication and commitment is make him a nice brandnew set of leg levelers for his berzerk!

Pick up your phone ULLY! >:(
i was out shopping for the weekend in between my postings - now i'm back!!!
-
have fun guys !
-
Just loaded up the Time Pilot.....23.00 hrs and still 26.5 degrees outside, NUTS !
Still have to load some stuff and then sleep quickly because it will be VERY early tomorrow :S
-
wow, thx so much andré! i'll also have to go to bed now, need to do some cat hairs cleaning before your arrival tomorrow ... :-[
-
here's an update on the wrong-way-round ORANGE roadtrip:
right after andre's arrival, we went to my storage to drop off the cab he had brought along. because it's the day before the "match of the century" (as andre calls it), he has to show some flag!
let's see what's underneath that piece of cloth - reveal please!
andre, you're pushing ...
... i'm pulling!
another foreign cab touching german soil ;D
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4079/4782213233_eff191e398_b.jpg)
since patrik and i have moved quite a few games into my storage, he's taking over
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4116/4782848766_eb688b5f29_b.jpg)
just some more pushing and we're there. i like the cabinet's sticker "people on the move" ;)
in order to celebrate the arrival of TIME PILOT to my arcade (well, to my storage), i'm putting on my original world war i outfit 8)
because the weather is extremely hot outside (35°C+), my badly-isolated apartment directly underneath the roof acts almost like a sauna :o. nevertheless, andré has also come over to help me fix some of my games. well, to be honest, he's the guy who's fixing my games, i'm the one helping him with cold water and towels :).
here's andré working on my berzerk which only gave three beeps. after exchanging one bad ram and a swap of the sound board, we get 8 beeps! berzerk repair  check
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4093/4782849200_c1fa0868da_b.jpg)
here's andré working on my wizard of wor which played blind without any neckglow on the monitor. after finding a bad soldering spot on the neckboard, we get a picture! wizard of wor repair  check
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4782849350_17807a46f0_b.jpg)
here's andré working on my defender pcb which was missing the highscore battery. after installing a williams battery replacement, everything's working perfectly! defender repair  check
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4095/4782212543_b18249da57_b.jpg)
that's it, i didn't take any more pictures - didn't want to bug andre too much. in the evening we watched germany win over "the country with the strange name" (at least that's what homer thinks) ;D
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4782272993_8dbbc64705.jpg)
all in all, we had a nice weekend, managed to get a couple of games running, ate some not so healthy food and drank some german beer and a looot of water! thx a lot for coming over, for bringing the time pilot and for helping me out with my games. I OWE YOU, ANDRE!!!
-
wow! he sure is a wizard!
-
looks like you two have a great time!

I'm JUST in safely back !
First of all, it was f-ing HOT
The weather Gods were laughing there asses off I bet because instead of loads of snow they now gave us loads of HEAT !
Anyway, I'm very glad that it was so succeful. Esp. getting the Berzerk back in working shape was important to me. Luckely it was quite easy. The strange thing is that although we only had three beeps, it wasn't the BSC board that was failing but the VFB. And incindently, the game actually showed the bad RAM when it was booted ! Silly from me not asking if it indicated anything on the screen before but I admit that I also didn't have much faith in those indications before.
Another lesson learned !
Although we got 8 beeps and could play the game, very soon the Voice board started acting up (Ully already mentioned it had done before). It was all like a funny sounding garbage being produced. Funny, but not what you want it to be. So we exchanged the voice board with a spare and it worked great again. I will look into it later here what the problem on the voice board is.
Then I just _had_ to improve the picture on the screen, took a bit of regulating to get a fine picture.
The WoW was pretty easy too. Although there was no neck-glow (which often is an indiction of no HV) I could hear the HV crackling up on the first power up.
So I expected the HV to be there, I checked with my HV probe and indeed 20 kV.
So, why was the heater not glowing ? There were some tracks that we knew had been cracked and one of them was the trace for the heater. I pretty soon found out with the multi-meter that the previous repair didn't work, so I soldered in a bridge using one leg of a resistor. Fired up and YES we have WoW !!
Of course we had to play a couple of 2 player games and what a lovely game this is ! First time ever that I played it on an original machine !!! (I already loved the Atari 8-bit version). But, there was no marquee light ! There was a 230V ballast in there, but it was still wired orignally (to the 110V) so we traced the wires and by moving one wire to the 230V tab of the transformer we got it to light up nicely.
Those were the main jobs for me, the Defender battery mod was a no-brainer. This morning we also investigated a problem on the Missile Command, turns out there is one bad opto-board in there..
Anyway, there was no magic at all, just some basic trouble shooting and I was glad that this was enough to get those brilliant games back up and running again.
Ully, if you EVER want to sell that WoW, think of me ;)
We also had some time to watch some videos and of course the "losers" finale ;) Congrats on Germany, now, I'm getting ready to witness the match of the century !!!!

i wonder why ;). is there even a euro-version of gyruss?
-
Even if there is one, it's not an Atari game (yeah, yeah, I know Time Pilot was a licensed game, but Gyruss is Konami and Atari never licensed it.
I have a feeling that Gyruss might mean Gravitar ?

Eeuh no I wasn't, they look kinda but now i see the difference. Anyway still quite a beautiful machine, I guess this one doesn't need a lot of work.

well, the sidearts need some touching up, i have to build a new coin door and must replace both the marquee and the overlay with reproductions. you see: the usual stuff ;)

Love this picture too :D
It reminds me my Time Pilot (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=417.0) workshop. When it came the time to do the 'ending workshop video', I had to found a special music ... which was very easy because of the TWO themes of this game : Time & Pilot.
Hey... it was the perfect moment for using some IRON MAIDEN songs
Caught Somewhere in Time, Aces High... and Remember tomorrow :-* Here's the video if you missed it, right here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjFAm1fj6-0&feature=related) ;)
I love that game :-*
